THE INDIE MUSICIANS SURVIVAL KIT TIP 1: PROMO MATERIALS; DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM. BY RENAY (SHADOW) GHANT-EATON
Are you a talented musician with a solid playlist? Have you recently started playing out, at clubs, coffee houses, etc? Have you started making a little money? Do you want to be a rock star? Well as an Independent musician, there are a few things you may want to have in place as you start your rise to the top of the charts. A bio: A short history of your brightest artistic accomplishments, as well a listing of y our recordings, who you have played with and any stations you have been featured on. A couple of good JPEG’s that you can transfer easily, so make sure they are small enough to be easily transferrable for email and print. A good quality CD of your best three to four songs that represent a good reflection of your style. This is your most powerful promotional tool. Without it you aren’t even in the game. Anybody can get a CD and most Indie artists have one. Make sure yours stands out by taking the time to put it in a nice case, with an eye catching label and be sure to include your website address (we’ll get to that in a minute) and phone number so you can be reached. A web page or website is your second best tool. It will work for you when you are doing other things. MySpace has regular pages, but they also have artist pages where you can load your MP3’s, post your show dates, send out invites, load JPEG’s and of course get friends. (Now we’re getting good!) HOSTBABY is the next step in websites for artists because it offers more features; email , website stats on hits and visits, different pages for bio, show dates, guest book, breaking news, pictures, MP3 space for full songs and clips in hi-fi and low fi. Both MySpace and HOSTBABY are SNOCAPS compatible. (We’ll cover SNOCAPS in the next article on the best sites to showcase and sell your music.) Business cards can be portable flyers. You can put your picture on it, your next show date on it and of course your website and phone number and leave them in music stores, coffee houses, etc. These tools can help you to present yourself like the up and coming Superstar you are and can help you stand out.

Modern rock/spoken word songstress Modern Rock/Spoken Word Songstress, Shadow carries 6 strings, 76 keys and a couple of sequencers to present poignant poetry, riveting rhythms, uncluttered yet vibrant choruses and melodies dancing up and down a 4 octave range to spew spoken word and song, with a ferocious flair to fan the flames that feed the fire, as a one woman, rock and roll medicine show spreading love from place to place.

The Digital OverDose BLOG www.thedigitaloverdose.blogspot.com
I am so sick and tired today. I am tired of working my job and not doing my music full time. I am sick and tired of passive, inactive people who won't even vote on line to support an artist me. I am sick and tired and being measured by my breast size, color and age and not my talent. I am sick and tired of not making the money I deserve and struggling like a dog in spite of the fact that I work like one. I am sick and tired of phony people who act one way one day and another way the next day. I am sick of reaching out to people; trying to build friendships and having them act like they are doing me a favor. I am sick and tired of millions of people making the dancing cat an internet sensation on YouTube, while videos of substance like 9/11 or Ignorance Is Bliss about the genocide in Rwanda barely get viewed. I am sick and tired of scanning my Face book page for meaningful connection only to find a series of self serving, unconnected, random thoughts, shout outs and periodic comments about insignificant nonsense. I am sick and tired of having to be politically correct so I don't offend anyone with what I say or how I act. I am sick and tired not being able to meet a strong, successful, confident, funny, single, honest, sensitive, chivalrous, attractive man who is interested in dating and courageous enough to get out from behind the computer and say hello like a real person in person. I am sick and tired of feeling like I have to "dumb it down" to be accepted and appear non threatening to certain people. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, but I will not be moved. I promise myself to continue to be me in all my brightness and blackness. I will continue to strive to be the best I can every day and speak my truth. I will continue to make my music not for the masses but for the one who heard "Sane" at a recent show and cried because he finally felt like someone understood him. I will continue to look in the mirror at my Hershey chocolate skin, my thick hips, my kinky hair, and my curved lips and tell myself that “I am beautiful and worthy of everything I seek. I am a child of God and perfect just as I am. I will remind myself that I path I chose is less traveled and it is lonely at the top. I will continue to thank God for each day as a gift and a new opportunity to be better than my best. I promise to remember that even when it seems that I am alone, I am not. As in the poem "Footprints", Jesus carries me when my load is heaviest. I will not be moved. I promise myself that I will not wear my heart on my sleeve, but as a badge of honor on my chest to share and be shared with. Peace, love and happiness.. Shadow
Musicians On Call, a nonprofit organization formed in 1999, brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. Musicians On Call uses music to promote and complement the healing process for patients, families and caregivers. Musicians On Call was originally founded by Michael Solomon and Vivek Tiwary in the course of their volunteer work with The Kristen Ann Carr Fund at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. After a concert sponsored by the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, a hospital staff member raised the issue that some of the patients had been unable to attend the performance either because they were in treatment or too sick to leave their rooms. In response, Michael, Vivek and the musician went from room to room to play for those patients who had been unable to attend the concert. The one-on-one interaction of patient and musician created a crucial intimacy; the expressions on the faces of friends and family members at the patients' bedsides revealed a deep sense of connection and release.
