UIA 2020 RIO DE JANEIRO PAVILION

The designed pavilion was made to a brazilian architecture competition to represent Rio de Janeiro city in the internacional architecture fair UIA (Union Internationale des Architects), at Seoul/South Corea, in the year of 2017, as the next seat city for the next edition of the fair, in 2020.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, the unique natural landscape and topography attract attention and is present and inspiring the most varied forms of art. Taking advantage of one of the Rio’s main characteristics, the sinuous curves of the local topography, our

UIA 2020 RIO PAVILION

proposal will be composed of parallel plans that will eventually shape the silhouette of Rio, alluding to the city’s rugged horizon. To do so, we used the parametric design approach to translate the city’s silhouette into architecture.

Our primary inspiration are the shapes of Rio de Janeiro’s natural landscape: “Pão de Açúcar” and “Morro dois Irmãos” (01). We reinterpreted that natural skyline into architecetural parametric softwares and could shape the stand forms through serial planes.

The serial plans are oriented at an angle of 45 degrees, promoting a narrative with the passer according to their angle of view; In some moments, the structure will seem almost transparent and, as the person passes by, the plans will overlap and the structure will turn opaque,

with the transparency kept only at the point where the transparent profiles (with the event colors) were inserted. As they overlap, the colors will blend , building a direct link with the overlapping effect exploited in the UIA 2020 RIO visual identity.

Kaira Looro SACRED ARCHITECTURE

This design proposal was between the 10 chosen finalists at the Inernational Architecture Competition Kaira Looro. The competition asked for an ecumenial space to be built on Tanaf Village, Senegal, by its own population and to serve multiple religous practices present ar the region. The “unity” concept adopted in this design is based at the four elements of nature: earth, water, fire

and air. In this sense, we seek to create the connection of these elements so that each individual, with its own personality, experience and spirituality, absorbs, in a particular way, the energies coming from these elements. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, explains about the four psychic functions and relates each of those with one astrological element: earth with sensation through experimentation; water’s K A I R A LO O R O S AC R E D A R C H I TEC T U R E

related with feeling and stimulates the emotions; Air’s to thought and understanding of theories; fire stimulates the intuition and the present valorization of the philosophical, spiritual or moral teachings. Each of these elements is present in the religious worship of the different ethnic groups of Tanaf Valley, for example, fire is considered sacred in most religions and almost all of their rituals are performed in the presence of this element.

This proposed sacred archtiecture aims to fit harmonically on the site context in Tanaf Village. The local culture, materials, climatic conditions and the emerging needs were respected and fundamentally important on the development of this design proposal. In that sense, the main design

idea is to bring to its users awareness that in a single country, city or even a small village, as Tanaf, there are may different beliefs from diferent people; uniting religions isn’t our claim, but it is simply allowing the free of cult for those. The tree, on the center, represents the life cycle on earth. Its roots seek K A I R A LO O R O S AC R E D A R C H I TEC T U R E

in the soil its fortification, for full growth. The trunk, when gaining rigidity, seeks balance through the branches. With the changes of seasons, nature - the tree - also changes, transforms and adapts to the environment in which it is inserted, translating, in this single element, the whole spirit of our project.

New Cabrini Homes MIXED-USE

The “New Cabrini Green” was a design proposal for the 4th year studio during my exchange studies at Illinois Institute of Technology. We were asked to remove the existing buildings in the original CabriniGreen Homes site, which is frequently associated with

deplorable public housing in the U.S., due to crime and gang violence over the years, and completely recreate the area, (around 100,000m²) redesigning both the urban landscape and the buildings, that should incorporate commercial and housing units. The main idea for this design proposal was to preserve the

existing landscape on the site, in a way to maximize the green areas for the public spaces. The building footprint should be near minimal and the newly proposed architecture, when viewed from above, should camouflage itself in the green space around it.

Fatima Sanctuary SANCTUARY TO HOST OUR LADY OF FAT I M A’ S C H A P E L R E P L I C A

This national architecture competition was organized by Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB/RN) in order to bring to Natal city a sanctuary to house the replica of Fatima Sanctuary, attracting people from all over the country to practice their faith. The sanctuary was proposed to be inserted in a lowincome neighborhood in Natal/RN and work not only as a religious building, but

as an urban facility for this community. Our proposal sought a minimal footprint on the site in order to maximize the free urban public spaces with landscaping and mutiple uses, as parking lot and sports court and also a peregrination pathway, that wuould lead to Fatima’s Chapel Replica. The worshipping area, where it is included the Fatima’s

Chapel replica, can be seen from almost every place, since it is proposed as the greatest point of interest just. We designed a pure volume with only three points of visual interest when viewed from the outside, in order to represent the Holy Trinity, which points are: the main tower with the Cross, the entrance and the skylight above the worshipping room.

This project was my final undergraduation thesis in order to obtain the title of bachelor in architecture. The main proposal was to develop a new school of architecture and urbanism in

my university (Federal do Rio Grande do Norte - UFRN), while also filling other needs from services that exists nowaday at the campus, like leisure and study areas, spaces for artistical and cultural exhibitions, etc.

The hybrid architecture principles were used in this project, and the starting point was by the results of a post occupancy evaluation/ interviews conducted with UFRN’s campus users.

The starting point was by interviewing few users of UFRN’s Campus and Architecture Students. After indentifying multiple different needs request by its users (1), in order to

make the New School as an attractor pole and provide more integration with the whole University, the design proposes to integrate both porgrams - archi related and campus related ones (2) and join those together

creating a completetly new hybrid organism (3), where the circulation paths are placed along the whole building in order to promove a diversified experience to the users, creating a ‘recipient building’.

The diagram (01) presents the existing UFRN’s Architecture School. It was necessary to exclude some existing buildings (02) to open space for the new project, such as the old school of architecture and urbanism and some warehouses. As a consequence, the new opened space (03)

was planned in a way that it had a very flexible pathway, giving access to all directions of interest on campus (04). In this sense, the proposed building shapes itself around those points, having permeability and free circulations (05, 06). Considering that the University Centre and New School of Architecture and

Shelf Houses E M E R G E N C Y S H E LT E R S F O R N AT U R A L D I S A S T E R S

The Shelf House was the winning proposal of a student competition for ibero-american countries, focused on the bioclimatic architecture. The competition’s claim was to develop proposals for emergency shelters, to be used during ambiental disasters periods.

Both housing and facilities units were created focusing on the ease of transportation and fast building, using a modulated system. A standard container (2,43m x 6,00m) can fits up to 8 housing units, which can fit up to 48 people. The proposed structure is made using pallet racks, keeping the pre existing

modulation and using naval structure sealings. Everything was thought focused on low cost and ease of adaptability for different places. The pieces have the following dimensions: 1,20m x 2,40m, in order for them to be transported without difficulties and make it easier for a cooperative construction system.
