Baton Rouge rests along the banks of the Mississippi River. It was named more than 300 years ago when French settlers came across a marker between two warring tribes of Native Americans. Louisiana’s capital, it is one of the biggest cities in the state and among the nation’s largest ports. Over the last several years, shopping has also grown and is becoming a real draw for visitors. With the addition of Perkins Rowe, Towne Center and the Boulevard, Baton Rouge offers even more options for those who love to shop. Shoppers can find almost anything in Baton Rouge, from precious antiques to trendy fashions. Outside of Baton Rouge in the growing town of Gonzales is a major shopping outlet center. Gonzales is also known as the “Jambalaya capital of the world,” after the old Creole dish of rice, ham and chicken. Between Baton Rouge and New Orleans lies plantation country. The river is lined with the whitewashed, wide columned and French colonial style plantations that grew indigo, sugar cane and rice. Many of the plantations predate the Civil War and enjoyed their golden era from the 1830s-1850s.
