elcome to the 2015 second edition of REMODEL TAMPA BAY. This Fall/ Winter edition represents the best of the industry’s contractors, professionals, and suppliers in our area. NARI has been an industry name since 1935 nationally and locally since 1983. One of the primary goals of this organization is to ensure the safety and well-being of the general public by providing a streamlined way of connecting homeowners with licensed individuals for their remodeling needs. In addition to undergoing a rigorous background check, each company/ member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry is pledged to observe high standards of honesty, integrity and responsibility in the conduct of business. Finally, all of NARI’s members adhere to a code of ethics, offering a professional job at a competitive price. The Tampa Bay Chapter of NARI has been working hand-in-hand with the City of St. Petersburg

Police department to assist in the crack-down against unlicensed construction activity in our community. Not only can hiring an unlicensed individual be a risky endeavor for the homeowner from an aspect of quality of work but can also mean inviting unwanted criminal individuals into your home. Check your contractors’ background! At NARI, we perform this research for you as our members are licensed individuals which have passed rigorous background checks! Helping those in need As a non-profit organization, we at NARI Tampa Bay feel it is our duty to help those in need. Many of our members have recently assisted one of our country’s Iraq veterans whom was wounded in combat and returned to his home here in St. Petersburg with lasting effects of his injuries. The remodel of his home went tremendously wrong after hiring an unskilled individual for his project. After taking his money and then tearing apart his home, the homeowner was left without a kitchen and working restroom facilities for many weeks. Members of our chapter provided materials and labor to complete this Iraq war veteran’s project in record time. (NARI) Certified Professionals


he National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is the only independent national association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry. NARI’s focus is on professional conduct, continuing education and training, and fair and ethical treatment within the industry. NARI certification of professional remodeling contractors serves as the association’s recognition of remodeling professionals who have met stringent criteria for experience and pledged a commitment to high standards of practice and NARI’s Code of Ethics. Among the factors to consider when selecting a remodeling contractor, in addition to NARI certification, is your assessment of and satisfaction with the remodeling contractor’s workmanship, reputation and integrity, durability of materials used, and equipment. Before hiring any remodeling or home improvement contractor, visit and inspect similar projects that he or she has completed, and establish that you will be able to communicate well with each other to ensure your complete satisfaction with the final product.

What does NARI Certification mean to you?


eciding to remodel your home is a big decision. Outside of buying your home, it may be the single biggest investment you make. You need to know that the remodeling contractor you choose is a full-time, dedicated remodeling professional. NARI’s certification program offers this assurance through its extensive screening, training and testing process. In addition, NARI certification programs require on-going education and training to maintain certification status. Only full-time, professional remodeling contractors are eligible for certification by NARI. The game of investing is a tricky one. Practice may not always make perfect, because investors are at the mercy of a vast information processing hub: “The market.” Numerous factors impact market performance daily. Information can change hourly. And don’t forget its biggest weapon that is every investor’s kryptonite: Volatility. Why: Because volatility can drive irrational behavior in investors.

Money is Emotional Successful marketers understand that the most effective messages stimulate consumers emotionally. While this article isn’t about marketing, it gives us a unique look at the human psyche: Emotions drive behaviors. One would be hard pressed to prove that money isn’t an emotional object. Enter volatility, the predator that feeds on our emotions. Now enter its partner in crime, the resulting behaviors. Prompted by spikes in volatility, emotions drive investors to endlessly try and craft the winning formula for market performance. And everyone has an answer for what works and what doesn’t. However, it’s precisely because of this fact that investors fail at consistently crushing it in the market.

Just How Vulnerable Are We? If financial behavior has taught us one thing, it’s that we’re more vulnerable than we know. This is because we have a hard time realizing when we’re being manipulated, especially when it comes to investing. Interestingly enough, we’re just as easily manipulated by others 12

(noise) as we are by ourselves (emotions). When this financially deadly combination unites, irrational behavior is sure to follow. Now that we know our weaknesses, it’s important to understand popular detrimental behaviors, the emotions that cause them and how to overcome them.

Information Overload “Dow Plummets 331, Oil Drops Below $50.” “Stocks Slide on Oil, Economic Fears.” “Dow’s Charge Turns the Year Positive.” “Dow Soars 323 Points, Erases 2015 Losses.”* All of these statements were headlines that ran in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today in January, 2015. When the catastrophic headlines dropped into investors’ laps stomachs churned. Losses were immediately assessed and thoughts of damage control no doubt started swimming in many heads. Would you be surprised that the booming headlines followed the catastrophic ones by only two days? For many investors, this ray of hope came too late; driven by the fear of what may be coming next, investors who acted rashly two days prior were now tending new wounds. Volatile times in the market are magnified by the noise surrounding investors. And the problem is that each talking head thinks they’re right. Not stopping until they’ve convinced you, they effectively manipulate investors into thinking they’re acting with the best intentions. Just remember this: Disaster can result from even the best intentions.

Track Records & Forecasting Investing is usually done to preserve our future. Investing also carries risk. What a conundrum; no wonder investors will listen to every source of information they can. This behavior is largely driven by the fact that financial loss is felt much deeper than financial gain. Hence why investors go to great lengths to avoid risks, more so than finding the right times to capitalize. Increased volatility triggers these emotions, enticing investors to regularly seek the advice Fall | Winter 2015

of market forecasters. Many also endure arduous journeys on investment selection based on comparisons of past performance. Here’s my dirty little secret: No one can tell you when chaos will ensue, when earnings will explode, and past performance has no impact on tomorrow. Everyone has a solution: talking heads in the media know when doomsday is coming, your friend knows the next hot stock, your advisor knows just when to get in and when to get out. But attempting to time the market or forecast its behavior can cause you to get burned by huge losses. A wise man once said, “Market forecasters will fill your ear, but never your wallet.” Thanks for the tip, Mr. Buffet.

Active Trading The battle of active versus passive management has raged on for decades. Rather than picking one or the other, we would do well to realize that elements of both are necessary. Unfortunately, volatility screams for us to act when positive spikes occur and to question why we’re holding when drawdowns happen. This is the exact moment where optimism and confidence can enact irrational behavior. While these are essential personality traits for happy human functioning, volatility can quickly blur the lines between optimism and realism, confidence and cocky. Regularly trading stocks in order to beat the market only guarantees one thing: A high friction portfolio with large fees coming out of your pocket. History has proven time and again that a large portion of fund managers regularly trail the market. Instances of out-performing the market are rare, and even harder to duplicate. Time IN the market should be your first priority (passive), while adjusting for risk tolerance, time frame and tax impacts along the way (active).

Build Your Personal Investment Philosophy The majority of investors would say their goal is this: to make their money last forever. Now, where’s the plan? Remember, a goal without a plan is simply a wish. Finding your “why” is a critical first step in building your personal investment philosophy. Why are you investing? Why is money important to you? Why do you value certain principles over others? Putting many things into perspective for investors, this helps them understand three vital points in formulating a sound reasoning behind their actions: 1. Where their money is. 2. What their money is doing. 3. W hy their money is where it is and doing what it is doing. This ensures that our investing behavior aligns with our personal philosophy and no one else’s. Yes, it’s hard to leave emotions out of investing. But when we understand the “why” behind our choices, the self-destructive impact of emotionally driven impulse can be overcome. We may not be able to say when or how volatility will strike, but I can tell you this: Storms will happen. It’s how you weather the storms that separate success from failure. Kayleen McCabe, former star of DIY Network’s “Rescue Renovation” and the 2009 Stud Finder winner. She is a licensed contractor that found her passion for remodeling after tackling an entire kitchen renovation in her early twenties. Today, Kayleen is using her unique combination of gutsy innovation and expert trade tricks to take on an even larger home improvement challenge… vocational training in America’s schools. She has teamed up with NARI, traveling America one school at a time with her same resilient never quit attitude showing America’s young adults how a career in the trades can be lifelong and extremely rewarding. She recently made her stop in Florida. Kayleen teamed up with the NARI Tampa Bay Chapter and spent a week speaking at some of Tampa Bay’s best vocational programs. NARI members and Kayleen spoke at several schools like; St. Petersburg High School, Career Academics of Seminole and Boca Ciega High. We asked Kayleen, at a recent NARI function, why has this become your passion? She answered, “Learning the trades as young adults not only provides a valuable skill set for today but for many it could be lifelong. Currently, all across America we have a shortage in skilled trained workers for positions in vocational based jobs, high paying jobs. It is my mission to shine a light in every school I can. see it in peoples’ faces when we meet. Whether we’re shaking hands at a trade show or they recognize me from TV, their expression gives it away: They want to find out how I ended up doing this. This thing that, based on reactions, is maybe best compared to a cow going for a swim: Not entirely amusing or impressive, exactly, but just surprisingly… surprising. Why wouldn’t a cow want to go for a dip? No good answer, right? But somehow you never imagined the two going hand-in-hand. That’s the best analogy for what it feels like to be a woman in the trades: People notice it. And then they realize it’s a silly thing to notice. Or isn’t it? No one’s sure. Hey, has this always happened - have cows always enjoyed the occasional lap? Should I alert someone that there’s a cow treading water? Or should I, like, take a picture and post it online? MAYBE I’LL ADD A PUNCHLINE AND IT WILL BECOME A VIRAL MEME, like Grumpy Cat. Okay, I think it’s time to back up a bit: My name is Kayleen, and I’m the cow – er, a general contractor. I build and construct and remodel for a living, and even had the good fortune of doing it on television for awhile - on DIY Network’s Rescue Renovation,

where I swept in and saved doomed home renovations for several seasons as the show’s contractor host. That’s another question I get a lot: “What’s it like to be on TV?” I tell them the truth – mostly surreal, always crazy hectic, glamorous about once every three months. It’s rarely the time and place to say what I really want to say: Being on TV was great. Except the part where I partly felt like a sideshow act. You see, before ending up on TV, I didn’t realize the sight of a woman wielding a sledgehammer or leaning over a table saw was usually seen as one of two things: 1) An anomaly, or 2) Grounds for college humor. People think I’m exaggerating when I say that, or putting forth some insincere I-didn’t-knowI-was-different social plea at the advice of an agent or PR rep. I’m not. In many other ways, gender lines in my home growing up were pretty traditional. But in the garage and shed and workshop, my urge to shadow my dad and learn from my grandfather wasn’t cute. It wasn’t encouraged in the interest of photo opps, or so my mom could tell the acquaintance at the grocery story how tomboyish Fall | Winter 2015

little Kayleen was. It was wholeheartedly and unaffectedly encouraged. And I took to it like a cow – er, fish – to water. Jump ahead some fourteen or fifteen years. Using a circular saw by the age of four and helping with a full home renovation at eight were highlights of my young life. Yet as a halfwaydecent high schooler student, every message at that time (the late 1990s) told me the same thing: Enroll in college prep courses – not that vocational nonsense that’s there for the lazy and not-so-bright. Take SAT prep courses. Then the SATs. Go to college. Get a respectable job. Pay someone else to do the grunt work – probably those kids who take shop classes, and who will wish they had your life. Maybe squeeze in the occasional DIY project between washing the car and wiping down your riding mower. Because those are the things you aspire to – and deserve - when you earn grades higher than Cs. So I did all those things. Some more than once, in the case of enrolling in college! Let’s just say this: A few institutes of higher education and a lot of tuition later, it became pretty obvious that I’m happiest on job sites. Not on academic research websites. So I dropped out. My lit professors were probably really happy to never read another essay full of sheetrock and drywall metaphors again (especially when those papers were supposed to be about Shakespeare…). My mom? Not quite as happy, but she came around. But what’s a girl to do when the thing – 16

the career - she wants is in a historically and currently male-dominated field? In the case of this girl, she took a bunch of dead ends until she returned fully to that first love: Working with her hands on contracting jobs that eventually landed her a TV show. I know. I’m still pinching myself over the TV part. Hosting a cable show gave me countless travel and training opportunities I never dreamed of. But back to my initial point, it also provided to be a double-edged forum in which I received that look – those questions – on a regular basis. To the cable-watching public, the unspoken question always seemed to be this: It’s cool that you’re a woman tackling skilled labor head on.

The market’s collapse finally validated what I’d heard murmured among many for years: How will this systemic push toward traditional higher education sustain itself? Who will unclog the pipes and replace transmissions when anyone deemed intelligent is pushed toward college – not to mention saddled with the debt that often comes with it? Okay, since we’re here: I’ve met so many people who attended four-year colleges because it’s the so-called respectable thing to do, only to change their minds later, switching gears to become a general contractor, electrician or a plumber. Sometimes this trial and error cost them a lifetime’s worth of student debt. Today’s emerging young workforce has all the liberal arts knowledge a culture could dream of, and all the financial shackles that keep them from embracing it. Okay, has the swimming cow overstayed her welcome? A few parting words before she towels off for now: You probably won’t be surprised to hear that my goal is two-fold: To fan the fire that burnt down the pervasive ‘college > trades” mentality, and to encourage America’s students – America’s smart, strong students – to consider careers in the trades. Wanna defy our nation’s obesity epidemic? Check. Earn a steady living? Check. Be unlikely to lack for work, considering the United States is facing a severe skilled labor shortage? Check. The times I’ve presented these goals of mine at industry events, I see company CEOs nod in agreement. I’ve learned from conversations with them that some companies are so short on qualified labor, they’re forced to submit specific curriculum requests to vocational schools just to get the workforce they need. For respectably-

That insinuation – that this career choice is not only questionable for a woman, but incongruent with what it means to be one – lies at the heart of America’s vocational problem. As does the assertion that vocational pursuits should be thought of as leftovers to be gobbled up only if management-track roles are all filled by the smarter set. Remember 2008? A bad year for many, but something happened in 2008 that I swear will benefit vocational labor for decades to come.

Could the push toward the trades be any more logical? No. It couldn’t be. ell, for starters, does one wish to have a lay person, acting as a doctor, perform open heart surgery or remove your bladder? How about a “handy-man dentist” to perform a root canal or extract a tooth? Of course you would not, those are regulated professions, as is the construction industry. And for most people, homeownership is probably the largest or second largest investment of a lifetime so why would a person put that investment at risk by hiring unlicensed individuals to perform work on that investment? So let’s take a look on how unlicensed remodeling & construction activities affect the community and the effects that this activity causes. Homeowner – Hiring unlicensed workers presents many issues, some are even quite dangerous: • Work not properly completed because unlicensed and uninsured individuals cannot pull permits; therefore there is no oversight of their work. Issues include potential fire from incorrect wiring, flooding due to improper plumbing, injury (possible death) due to improper structures erected, just to name a few. • In Florida, there is NO legal relief from improper work or defective materials used if the work and/or materials were provided/installed by an unlicensed individual or firm. • Anyone who is injured on your property can sue the homeowner and/ or your estate for medical expenses and lost wages if they do not have Workers Comp. insurance or exemptions from the State. • If you hire unlicensed workers, in Florida, it is against the law AND you are liable to pay their unemployment, Workers Comp and FICA taxes. • Based on sting operations and other data from government agencies, most unlicensed people have a prior criminal background that include child molestation and other sex crimes, burglary, Grand Theft, just to name a few. Not exactly the kind of people you want in your house, working on YOUR investment.

The Community – Unlicensed firms and individuals cannot pull permits. And because there is no oversight of them, they also do not buy insurance. The net result is that we have our buildings where we work, live and play put at risk. • Because permits are not being pulled, the revenue normally generated to support the municipality charged with overseeing construction work is much less. Less funds = less service due to building official personnel layoffs and cut-backs. • Property insurance costs increase overall for a community because the claims that are filed due to the effects of poor or incorrect workmanship by unlicensed/uninsured workers often do not appear for years. Therefore, the 2nd or 3rd generation owners are making claims and often see their rates increase as a result. • Injuries and resulting chronic illness and/or disabilities sustained on the job site by uninsured workers also taxes the system. The community at-large is paying for those Individual’s medical care costs because there were no premiums being paid into the system for Workers Compensation. • Loss of premiums by the insurance industry for general liability coverages is an additional negative effect. Take thousands of firms and individuals NOT paying insurance that would typically cover losses that do occur, even when the work is done correctly; because accidents do happen. The community, once again, is called upon to shore up those losses. • I ndividuals who do not bother with getting proper licenses and insurance are also less likely to properly account for their income. The losses at the county, state and federal level would be staggering, if measurable. •T he lack of enforcement by local law enforcement encourages unlicensed workers to converge on those areas, thereby further increasing all of the negative effects for both homeowners and the community as listed above.

1920’s Rebuild

his project began as a full-scale remodel to an old pool house (built around 1920) that had been used for storage for years. The clients wanted to turn the unusable structure into a guest house and outdoor dining area to enhance their pool area with combining a European cottage look with a contemporary style and functionality, while maintain the historic motif. We built a covered walkway from the main house to the pool house. To maintain the historic motif, we matched all the old rafter tails and tied the roof in with the pool house. We also re-did the roof of the pool house. During demolition, while pulling the old plaster off, we discovered, much to our surprise, that the sill plate of the exterior walls was a 4x4 heart pine sitting directly over the dirt with no foundation. Perhaps the original builder was trying to save money in this pre-Depression era. After discovering this, we supported the structure in place by constructing wood shores and diagonal bracing. We removed the old sill plate around the entire perimeter, had our architect draw proper details for a new monolithic footing with stem wall, and then we dug the new footing, installed the new sill, got it inspected and poured it. After that, we reinstalled a new, pressure-treated sill plate over the new foundation and re-connected all the exterior wall studs. The final result was stunning. The outdoor planter serves as a divider 28

between the pitched driveway and the level surface of the dining area, in addition to providing an herb garden for the clients, who love to cook. The outdoor kitchen was created by our designer to fit the clients’ specifications exactly. We used some of the reclaimed wood from the old floor joists to build the stairs into the bedroom. Needless to say, the clients were delighted with the results. The outdoor kitchen is perfect for hosting barbecues and cocktail parties, and the pool house boasts a gorgeous kitchen in marble and chrome, a cozy guest room and a luxurious bathroom. Included in the remodel was the adjacent climate-controlled garage for the man of the house (a sports car lover), and a nearby storage room. The clients’ feedback was as follows: “Thank you so much for helping create our dream backyard!!! We could not be happier and we plan to use your company on any upcoming project we have. Two Outdated Bath


he existing bathroom in this beach front condo was dated and uninviting. The goal of its owners was to increase storage throughout the bath, as well as creating an elegant, spa- like atmosphere that highlighted the beautiful ocean views. One highlight of this bathroom is the walk-in shower. The back wall glass tile was chosen to match the gorgeous tones of the ocean water and create an aura of calmness. The 12� rain shower, as well as the modern hand-held shower with slide bar, cascades down to the Carrara marble shower floor, which was also installed throughout the floor of the entire bathroom, creating a timeless look of elegance and relaxation. The granite shower bench allows seating in the shower, and the tiled niche allows storage of shower soaps and accessories. Just outside the frameless, 3/8� thick glass enclosure lays a towel warming rack, providing the homeowners with freshly-warmed towels upon exiting the spa shower. Another highlight of this bathroom is the addition of two custom-built cabinets. The contrasting dark wood of the sixteen drawers and the two large mirrored cabinet doors allowed for a tremendous amount of storage in the bathroom while retaining the spacious feel of the space. Additional custom oak shelving was also added to the walk-in closet, leaving our clients with lots of storage throughout the bathroom. Another exciting feature of this bathroom is the new custom-made vanity mirror. This mirror contains hidden storage cabinets on each side of the vanity, each with a convenient electrical outlet for bathroom accessories. Finally, a modern lighting fixture was added above the dresser, pulling together the entire look with its matching brushed nickel finish that is shown throughout.

he existing bathroom in this Clearwater home was outdated and cramped. The shower was small and difficult for our elderly clients to enter as well as maneuver in. The main goal of our clients was to create a spacious bathroom that not only was easy to use, but also to create a space for them to relax in. The highlight of the new bathroom is the luxurious walk-in shower. With no shower curb and a frameless glass wall, the shower is easy to enter. The French drain at the back of the shower paired with the slight slope of the shower floor retains the water within the shower. The brushed nickel safety bar, matching the updated shower fixture, adds both ease of use and elegance to this shower. The spa theme is continued in the shower with the cascade of spiced-stone pebbles down the shower wall and onto the shower floor. Another highlight of this elegant bathroom is the soaking tub. Complete with a spout and handles that match the shower fixtures, this large tub also has an additional safety bar for easy access and use, making it perfect for the wants and needs of our clients. The tub is also accented by gorgeous wainscoting tile that matches the bathroom floor as well as the shower walls. The next focal point of this bathroom is the new custom vanity cabinetry. This vanity features updated faucets as well as all-plywood box construction, with 5-piece drawer fronts as well as slow close doors and drawers. The lower portion of the vanity consists of three large storage drawers and four full height doors. The accenting countertop cabinet provided our client with even more storage, with its attractive, “water drop� glass door. Additionally, this cabinet contains another slow-close drawer that contains a convenient power strip for bathroom accessories. The countertops, knee wall and window sill were accented with an elegant, unique 3cm granite, pulling colors from the shower pebbles, the custom cabinetry and the tile wainscoting and floors. Finally, the bathroom was illuminated through the installation of modern recessed lighting above the shower, as well as decorative brushed nickel pendant lights on each side of the vanity.
