HANDMADE WITH PRIDE SINCE 1938
“The Hartley Botanic Glasshouse here at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons is simply a magnificent piece of craftsmanship. Its bespoke design creates an integral indoor space within the heart of my beloved garden. In perfect harmony with its surroundings, it is as if it has always been here. Great food needs great ingredients and the glasshouse allows my team and I to grow organic herbs and heritage vegetables for the daily menu. Each aspect of the menu is driven by ethical, environmental, seasonal and regional values, whenever possible. From the glasshouse to the kitchen to the plate in no time at all – you can’t get fresher than that. Its beauty is in its design, providing a versatile space not only to grow in, but as an idyllic venue for a number of intimate events – we’ve even held weddings in there.” Raymond Blanc O.B.E.

A S T R O N G H E R I TA G E , A PROUD HISTORY Inspired by the Victorians and leading the industry since 1938
he Victorians: engineers, pioneers and a great inspiration for our founder, Vincent Hartley. Channelling the spirit of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Sir Joseph Paxton and other leading figures from an era renowned for its inventiveness, Hartley set to work designing his original aluminium glasshouse in 1938. His vision was clear. Structures should be strong and practical, yet clean and uncluttered.
This he achieved using strong, lightweight purlins and joists to create elegant interiors free of bracing and with optimised natural light. Such innovation set the standard throughout the industry. And Hartley continues to do this today, creating the next generation of exceptional glasshouses, while staying true to the principles our business has been built upon.

AN INVENTIVE SPIRIT Proof that Vincent Hartley’s innovative nature was not limited to glasshouses
mongst Vincent Hartley’s other innovations is the headlight cowl used so effectively during blackouts in the Blitz. He also created the first “everlasting” aluminium plant tags. Hartley was also responsible for what was potentially the first gas safety device – the ingenious “Safeboil”, designed to eliminate the hazard of milk boiling over.
Much of these endeavours survives. Given over to the manufacture of shell cases during the Second World War, the machines shown opposite are still in use today, fabricating the precision aluminium parts used in our glasshouses. Hartley’s inventive spirit still prevails in the designs of our unique structures.

“In 1948 my father bought a 15’ x 10’ Hartley Greenhouse and coerced me, an unwilling teenager, to lay the foundations for the first time . . . My father-in-law then transported the greenhouse to Anglesey. Imagine my delight when it came into my possession in 1983. . . The foundations for this engineering masterpiece were again laid in Southport and then in the garden of my present home. On each occasion the greenhouse remained watertight, and to this day - some 52 years later - still looks as good as new.”
