VILLA MARIA HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS
THAT ’ S SHOWBIZ
SHOWBIZ is an original play created by myself, based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The plot is also inspired by director James Cameron (Avatar )’s Oscar loss to ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker). The character of Mitchell Hamlet Adams is based on Hamlet. The character of Claude Kingsley is based on King Claudius, and is inspired by James Cameron. The character of Anne Hamlet Wallace is based on King Hamlet, and is inspired by Kathryn Bigelow. The characters Rosa Crantz and Gilda Stern are evidently based on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I chose to incorporate this plotline in order to consider the praise received and superiority gained when winning an esteemed prize. Feelings of intense jealousy can, often times, be felt amongst the losers. The “esteemed prize” in That’s Showbiz is the “Best Directed Movie Award,” while the “esteemed prize” in Hamlet is the position of the King of Denmark. Both Claude Kingsley and King Claudius go out of their way to receive recognition—extremes that can only be conceived by the minds of the twisted.
