The long grass and heather, not to mention the daunting 7,174-yard length of Champions Pointe Golf Course, got the better of area high school golfers in Thursday’s IHSAA regional tournament. Rising Sun’s Shiners, advancing to the regional level as a team for the first time since 2001, finished 16th among 18 teams at Champions Pointe, at 339. Senior Bryce Murray led Rising Sun with a five-over par 77, tying for 21st individually. Rising Sun’s top golfer the past four seasons had recorded 86s in his previous two regional appearances as a sophomore and junior. Brady admitted that bettering his effort by nine strokes might have been because he played the back nine first and got the tough 18th hole out of the way with time to a one over par 37 on the front after a 40 on the back nine. Brother Brady Murray shot 85 (43-42) to tie for 65th place. Austin Armstrong came in at 87 (45-42/82nd overall). Jordan King shot 90 (44-46)

to tie for 90th place and Aron Walker shot 99 (50-49). East Central junior Chad Spencer, an individual qualifier for the first time out of the Greensburg sectional site June 6, at 78, saw his regional round balloon to 91 (43-48) on the Fuzzy Zoeller-owned course’s par-72 layout. At 19over par, Spencer tied for 94th place overall, among 106 regional golfers. Despite the fine, sunny weather and somewhat damp course conditions due to two days of heavy rain that preceded the event, defending regional medalist Jordan Griffith, a Madison senior who went on to finish eighth individual in the 2013 state finals, didn’t make the cut Thursday. Griffith, headed for 2013 junior college national champion Vincennes University, missed a topfive individual qualifying spot for this week’s state finals – back at Franklin’s The Legends GC Tuesday and Wednesday – by one stroke. He tied for ninth place overall with a two-over par 74. Five rival golfers tied for second-high individual score, at 73, behind top

individual Nick Osterberg of Perry Meridian (72) in Thursday’s regional. Top three team finishers - Columbus North (298), Center Grove (301) and Bloomington South (303) – advanced to the state finals. Madison placed ninth in the regional, team-wise (322), with Greensburg 15th (338). Rising Sun was one stroke behind Greensburg but Heritage Hills (315) was tops in the three team group. Rising Sun placed 10 strokes ahead of Jennings County (349) which had placed second in front of the Shiners

in the Madison Sectional. Regional low medalist honors went to Greensburg sectional runner-up Christian Fairbanks of Columbus North, with a three-under par round of 69. Other area individuals competing at Champions Pointe Thursday were Batesville’s Dom Schildknecht (81) and Lucas Williams of Jac-Cen-Del (82), who tied for 38th and 43rd, respectively. Greensburg’s Keegan McCullough led the Pirates at Senior Bryce Murray pitches to the green during a team 81, also tying for 38th place. leading 77 in the 2014 Henryville Regional.
