RS bumps, sets, spike way to ORVC lead
Rising Sun remained unbeaten in Ohio River Valley Conference volleyball play with wins over Southwestern and Milan this past week. The Lady Shiners hosted the Rebels on Tuesday and rallied to win the match in five games, 3-2. Southwestern posted a 25-19 win in game one but Rising Sun came back to even the match with a 29-27 win. The Rebels took game three 25-22 then Rising Sun
bounced back for a 25-17 win to set up the 15 point deciding game. Southwestern jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Shiners trailed 8-7 when Bailee Bostic stepped up to the service line. Kills by Katie Jackson and Alix DeDreu followed by a service ace and hitting error by the Rebels pushed the Shiners ahead 12-8. Rising Sun pulled to match point on a kill by Kelsey Romans but SW had one more run to tie it at 14. Jackson served the final two points with Vinup delivering the final kill. Jac-Cen-Del finished
5-for-5 serving and added four kills and three blocks. Vinup had seven kills and three blocks plus 11-for-11 and 2 aces. Bailey Baker was top server with 25-for-27 with an ace and led the defense with 28 digs. DeDreu led the hitting with eight kills,25 digs and 18-for-19 and two aces. Romans added four kills and 10-for-11 and one ace. Presley added 19-for-21 and three aces and three kills. Bostic finished with 17-for19 and four aces along with two kills. Rising Sun improved to 3-0 in ORVC play with a 3-1
win over Milan on Thursday at Milan. After a 25-20 loss in game one, Rising Sun came back to win 25-11, 28-26, 25-15. Presley was 19-for-21 serving and three aces to go with 28 assists. DeDreu was 14-for-15 with three aces and 13 kills. Bostic was 16-for-18 and three aces with two kills. Romans was 17-for-18 serving with Baker 13-for-13 and 25 digs. Vinup led the attack with 14 kills and added 4-for-5 serving. Jackson had seven kills, a block and 5-for-6 with an ace.
Rising Sun returns to ORVC play tonight as they travel to Switzerland County. The Lady Shiners went 1-2 at the Connersville Invitational on Saturday. Madison defeated RS 25-8, 25-10 and 25-16, 25-9 to Connersville. Rising Sun picked up a 25-15, 25-18 win over Marion. Presley was 13-for-15 with three aces. Dedreu added 9-for-9 with two aces with Romans serving 11-for-11 and an ace with Bostic 6-for7 and three aces and Vinup 3-for-3. Vinup had three kills with two each by DeDreu, Romans, and Presley.

The Rising Sun boys cross country team puled off a surprise victory in winning the Pre-Ohio River Valley Conference meet on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Hanover. Coach Caitlin Sauerhage’s five person team claimed a one point win over South Ripley 51-52. Switzerland County was third with 62 followed by Southwestern 89, Jac-Cen-Del 98 and Milan 142. Leading the way for the Shiners was sophomore Claudio Gallegos with a sixth place finish (19:13.15). Freshman Zach Martini was eighth (19:13.52) while classmate Colton Henry ran a strong race to place ninth (19:25.37). Rising Sun had been competing without a team score during the first part of the season but senior Briar Miller returned from a knee problem to place 11th (19:34). Junior Matt Yocum placed 17th ((20:14.42) to give the Shiners the win. South Ripley was led by Austin Allen’s third place finish (18:22.96). Switzerland County took top individual honors as senior Braden Burk was first (17:35.05) with teammate Talen Taylor runner up (17:35.9) Rising Sun’s three member girls squad had no chance for a team score but ran well. Kinzie Scott was the overall winner(20:44.82) while senior Sydney Willhite posted a ninth place finish (24:54.16). Freshman Kyla Willhite was 25th (28:47.41). The Lady Pacers won the girls’ meet with 30 followed by Southwestern 40, and Jac-Cen-Del 58, as only three schools had five member teams. The top 12 individuals will be designated all-conference when the ORVC meet is held on Oct. 7. After a Tuesday meet at Jennings County, Rising Sun will compete in the South Dearborn Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. They compete in the Pumpkin Invitational in Versailles on Thursday.
