Matt shooting for more than the stars FROM the age of eightyears-old, photography has been a part of local Matt Burman’s life. A passion for shooting photos started then, when his father presented him with a hand-me-down Yashica SLR full-frame camera. Following this moment, him and his dad would go out bush together, hiking, camping and all the while learning about the delights of nature, and snapping it as they went. Decades later, Matt’s love of photography and nature continues to captivate not just himself, but nature and art lovers across the region. His images of land

Time to battle brains this Saturday CYCLONE Gillian threatened to blow into town last Saturday night, and in doing so blew out the hopes of those wanting to have some fun at Rotary Trivia Night, which had to be postponed. Now, Rotary Trivia Night has been rescheduled for this Saturday, March 22, at the Nhulunbuy Town Hall from 7pm, and is set to blow some minds. Teams of six will battle brains in a night of fun and trivia, with great prizes including cash and fuel vouchers, up for grabs. Rotary President Leanne Parise said the huge annual event was set to be a cracker. “As always, everyone is welcome to get dressed up in themed team costumes, and battle for the best-dressed team!” Tickets are still available from Lynne Walker’s Office, but locals are urged to get in quickly.

and seascapes in the East Arnhem region have become online hits, and a new calendar he has created has enough orders for it to sell out before even being released. And he says for him, despite years in the game, his joy in the process of photography is getting even bigger. “The most-exciting thing

about taking photos is the beauty of actually catching that moment in time that you were blessed to see, and be able to hold on to it forever.” Matt often treks to farflung spots in order to get the perfect shot. “When I started out, with like-minded photography friends, we’d go out and climb a mountain in the middle of the night and hold

up in a cave for an hour or so, just to get that perfect dawn shot.” And he’s still getting up at dawn, on his days off from work, to capture those special shots. Just last week he rose before the sun did to capture a spectacular storm front rolling across Shady Beach, in Yirrkala, as the sky turned to pink with the coming day.

This weekend, Matt will be displaying some of his works at the Arafura Times 2013 Photos of the Year Exhibition, on Friday, March 21, and Sunday, March 23, at 4C’s Community Centre. Full details, What’s On guide, page 8.
