30 April 5 MAy Following its electrifyin’ 4 year London run the hit West End show Grease is touring again by popular demand. It comes to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate from 30 April to 5 May, with Danny Bayne starring as Danny and Carina Gillespie as his sweetheart Sandy, and with added X Factor from blonde baritone Rhydian Roberts who guest stars as Teen Angel Classically trained Welsh singer Rhydian Roberts rose to fame in 2007 after becoming a finalist on ITV1’s hit show The X Factor. After making his debut in Grease last year Rhydian is rejoining the tour to reprise the role of Teen Angel for a limited three week season. Based on a novel by Henri Murger, La Boheme is a Puccini masterpiece. One of the most romantic operas ever written it tells the tragic tale of the doomed, consumptive Mimi and her love for a penniless writer Rodolfo, who after falling instantly in love with Mimi, leaves because of her flirtatious behaviour. In true tragic opera fashion, the pair reunite briefly before Mimi’s death. This limited edition DVD will bring together for the first time promos and some TV appearances from right across his career, including the pioneering videos made for tracks such as ‘We Are Glass’ and ‘I Die: You Die’, right up to more recent promos ‘The Fall’ (from the 2011 Dead Son

Rising album) and the Battles collaboration ‘My Machines.’ The DVD will initially be sold on the Machine Music Tour which runs from late May into early June and will feature a one-off set, based around Gary Numan’s singles over the last 33 years, and material from the recent Dead Son Rising album.

Since the project began in October, the entranceway has been opened up, floors have been raised, state of the art lighting installed and new floor coverings laid. Hayley Sharpe Design is the firm responsible for the transformation, which will give visitors the kind of quality experience they would expect from a big city museum. With experience of working on

redesigning world-famous museums that include the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and Hong Kong Maritime Museum, the design firm is well placed to bring Northampton Museum and Art Gallery into the 21st century. Speaking about how the modernisation is progressing, Kevin Callis, senior project manager at Hayley Sharpe Design, said: “Our aim is for visitors to be wowed and wooed by the changes from the minute

they cross the threshold of the museum. The galleries are being transformed to create an open, modern and welcoming space that museum visitors have come to expect today.â€? In the Budget 2012 George Osborne stated that the Government was committed to a fairer, more efficient and simpler tax system and will reward those who work hard. He said the Budget was aimed at making the UK more competitive. This is our summary of the Budget and its implications.

1FSTPOBM 5BY On the recommendation of HMRC announcing higher rate tax was ineffectual, the Government reduces the top rate of income tax from 50 per cent to 45 per cent from April 2013. This will put the UK’s top statutory rate of personal income tax below that of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. It is a welcome reduction, and there are some tax planning opportunities here such as income deferment, and accelerated pension contributions.

1FSTPOBM "MMPXBODFT The personal allowance will be ÂŁ8,105 from April 2012 and this will be further increased to ÂŁ9,205 in April 2013. At the same time the basic rate limit will be correspondingly reduced from ÂŁ34,370 to ÂŁ32,245, so most higher rate taxpayers will get one quarter of the benefit a typical basic rate taxpayer will receive. This will provide a real terms gain of ÂŁ170 to most basic rate taxpayers and ÂŁ42.50 to most higher rate taxpayers. The Government has not however addressed the unfair 62% rate for those individuals with an income within the ÂŁ100,000 to ÂŁ116,210 lev-

el in 2012/13 (or ÂŁ118,410 in 2013/14). We would strongly recommend anyone likely to have total income in this income bracket to consider making pension contributions or charitable donations to offset the effect of this unfair tax rate. George Osborne stated he wanted to make the tax system simpler. He announced that the age related allowances will be phased out from April 2013. A controversial move affecting many pensioners.

$IJME #FOFäU There was an uproar when the Government announced last year that households with a higher rate taxpayer would lose their child benefit. The threshold has been increased to income over £50,000 a year and it will be applied gradually for income between £50,000 and £60,000. A positive and fair move. The taxpayer will be able to opt out of the charge and not receive the Child Benefit. The charge is effective from January next year and we suspect that the administration of the charge will be fraught with difficulties.

$BQQJOH 5BY 3FMJFGT A surprise announcement – not common in Budgets these days! The Government will introduce a limit on all uncapped income tax reliefs from April 2013. For anyone seeking to claim more than £50,000 of reliefs, a cap will be set at 25 per cent of income. The cap does NOT extend to pension contributions or enterprise allowance schemes. The cap does

however, include loss reliefs against total income, qualifying loan interest, gift aid and charitable gifts of land and shares.

&OUFSQSJTF *OWFTUNFOU 4DIFNF 7FOUVSF $BQJ UBM 5SVTUT The Enterprise Investment Scheme (“EISâ€?) and Venture Capital Trusts (“VCTâ€?) are incentives designed to encourage investment in smaller unlisted companies through a combination of Income Tax relief at 30% on the amount invested, capital gains tax exemption on disposal (in the case of investments in EIS companies only) and CGT deferral relief for other gains reinvested. From 2012/13 the maximum amount on which an individual can claim EIS relief will be increased from ÂŁ500,000 to ÂŁ1 million per annum. The maximum amount that can be invested in a VCT remains at ÂŁ200,000. The Government has also eased the qualification rules for qualifying companies. These reliefs do encouraging investment in smaller businesses and if you have a small company and are considering outside investment, this route may be appropriate for you.

The Government introduced anti-avoidance stamp duty land tax legislation - 15 per cent rate to be applied to residential properties over ÂŁ2 million purchased by non-natural persons. The press release advised that “non-natural personâ€? includes “companies, collective investment schemes(including unit trusts), and partnerships in which a non-natural person is a partnerâ€?. There are to be exclusions for property developers and for corporate trustees “in certain circumstancesâ€?. We await the actual legislation for a clearer view on this. In addition, there will be a consultation on the introduction of an annual charge on residential properties valued at over ÂŁ2 million owned by these persons.

of the five door Delta’s exterior profile though – it looks a little too bulbous at the rear for my taste. That said, I’ve seen worse looking new motors on the road and, for the price (just over £19,000), you get a lot of car for the cash; everything is well padded and the controls are smooth to operate. Luxury touches such as a leather clad steering wheel, a refrigerated compartment and privacy glass do make you feel that the Delta is a step up from the average

hatchback. The interior is roomy enough for four and, because the rear seats can recline 25 degrees backwards, your passengers are also offered impressive comfort options. But the boot is a letdown. It’s deep but not quite wide enough to easily fit in a folded up pushchair. I should know – I tried to load my little kids’ paraphernalia into the boot, and it was a tighter squeeze than I’d hoped for. Never mind,

in all other respects this fairly unusual looking car does the job of carting everyone around in relative style well. And it’s different from other vehicles in its sector, such as the VW Golf or Ford Focus. It’s economical too; on average, you can squeeze around 60 mpg out of the tank. With a 0-62 mph gallop of 10.7 seconds the Chrysler, mated to a 1.6 MultiJet turbo diesel engine, is not going to burn much rubber - but it

.0503*/( doesn’t feel underpowered. In fact the 222 lb/ft of pulling power allows this car to tow a load of up to 1300 kg (braked). That’s not bad for a hatchback with executive airs. The oilburner can sound a little less refined than some new diesel cars on the market, but this is only at start up and things under the Delta’s bonnet quieten down once you get rolling. On the safety side of things, the mid-sized Chrysler has won a European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP) five star crash safety rating. This is thanks to six airbags fitted as standard (front, window and curtain bags on both sides), and five three-point safety belts, with load limiters and pretensioners fitted to the front seats. In addition to that, the Delta is fitted with some pioneering electronic systems to make life at the wheel enjoyable yet very safe. Prime among these is the Absolute Handling System. This is an amalgamation of

various existing technologies such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Holder to ensure perfect hill starts every time, Anti Slip Regulation (ASR) which uses brake and engine control to optimise traction at any time, and a system which cuts in to ensure engine torque isn’t interrupted if a swift down change is needed during a climb. Along with its smaller sister, the new Chrysler Ypsilon, the Delta marks the resurgence of Chrysler Group LLC, which was formed in 2009 as a strategic alliance with Fiat. Chrysler’s portfolio contains some of Europe’s most recognisable vehicles, including the 300C saloon and top-selling Grand Voyager MPV. Now with the help of Fiat’s experience and knowledge in the small and medium-sized car sectors, Chrysler can infuse compact, more environmentally friendly models with the luxurious character traits of its bigger cars...
