FRI 21 - SUN 23 OCTOBER The sixth annual Arnold Festival Weekend, taking place at Royal & Derngate from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 October, marks what would have been the 90th birthday of the prolific and illustrious Northampton-born composer Sir Malcolm Arnold. To celebrate the occasion the festival offers the once in a lifetime opportunity to hear all Arnold’s nine symphonies performed in one weekend. In addition to the symphonies played by orchestras from across the country, the weekend will be punctuated by many short talks and performances of Sir Malcolm’s shorter and smaller scale works, as well as

other works by Walton, Britten, Vaughan Williams and others. The festival will be launched on the Friday night by the wellknown actor Robert Hardy, and other guest speakers during the weekend include the Jon Lord, founder of the legendary rock band Deep Purple. On the Sunday afternoon BBC Radio Northampton’s John Griff will be talking to residents of the town about their memories of events which took place in the years that each of the symphonies was written. The weekend culminates in a special celebratory Gala Concert on Sunday evening with the Malcolm Arnold Festival Orchestra and exquisite violinist

Nicola Benedetti, featuring Sir Malcolm’s emotionally-charged Ninth Symphony, an epic masterwork that was five years in the making. Completing the programme will be Tchaikovsky’s evocative Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Brahms’ passionate Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. Weekend tickets, covering all events except the Gala Concert, are just £12. Tickets for the Gala Concert on Sunday 23 October range from £14 to £31, with concessions, groups and schools discounts available. TUES 25 OCTOBER It was when the Tindersticks cropped up on the outro grooves of an episode of the Sopranos that most of us realised just how unutterably cool the

smoky sub-Cave gloomsters had become, even outstripping Nottingham’s other two all-time pop giants, Darts and Paper Lace. For 15 years, the atmosdripping noirheads have been chipping in scores for worldrenowned French filmmaker Claire Denis, and that’s what they’ll be whipping out tonight under pictures of light as high as a building. It’s an inspired and fruitful collaboration, pushing the boundaries of their fields to produce art of profound and charmed beauty.

TUES 20 OCTOBER She’s a real winner, is our Cara Dillon, the Irish folk singer who picked up ‘Album Of The Year’ in the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, as well as last year’s Spiral Award for Best Female Singer and Best Traditional Song (‘Jimmy MĂł Mhile StĂłr’). The simplicity and clarity of arrangement of Cara’s music brings to mind Nick Drake’s Island LPs. The voice is beautiful and poignant. Sweet but never sickly, in the same emotional range as Sandy Denny, somehow recalling Kate Bush. Cara sings about blood and soul, whether in her own compositions or native

traditional songs such as the haunting ‘Black Is The Colour’. Lost love. Her own baby twins, in-between the lines. Emigration. Hellos and goodbyes. Thu 20 CARA DILLON Core Theatre Corby

the ultimate traditional Christmas! 3PDLJOHIBN$BTUMFSFUVSOTUP$ISJTUNBT&WF 21st – 25th NOv 2011 Sitting atop its hillside like something out of a fairy tale, there’s nowhere quite like Rockingham Castle to get into the mood for a magical Christmas – especially as this November the 900-yearold royal castle (a family home these past 450 years!) is staging a wonderfully nostalgic return to Christmas Eve, 1949. It was in the Victorian era that so many of our great Christmas traditions were first instigated. The Christmas tree was first decorated by Prince Albert and the Royal Family, while Charles Dickens revived many a dying tradition to create a template for snowy carollers outdoors and cosy family excess indoors. Now Rockingham Castle is to be transformed, taken back in time to the classic era of great, flickering fires, the Great Hall table straining under the weight of seasonal fayre being ferried up from below stairs. Best of all, it will be possible for visitors to walk right back into this world via a fully costumed recreation, and watch the likes of the Butler, Governess, Footman and Housekeeper make their final Christmas preparations. With dramatic seasonal illuminations and period decora-

tions, traditional restaurant meals and snacks and gift ideas galore, there’s no better way to set the stage for the start of the Christmas season, and warm the festive cockles of your heart. sential oils are twofold – their actions on the skin itself and their mood-enhancing properties. Best selling products are the exfoliating and moisturising body and foot sugar scrubs rich in cold pressed virgin coconut oil. These can be used all over the body and are extremely effective on dry areas, leaving skin softened and smelling delicious. Recommended are the Sweet Orange for a refreshing pick-me-up in the morning or Lavender & Geranium before bedtime. For an even deeper moisturising effect, follow with some extremely rich body butter containing 35% fair-trade organic cocoa butter. The cocoa butter makes them smell

releAse dAte: fri 23 Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of incredible beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this ma-

rooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller ‘The Thing’, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd

(Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name.

Footloose and Fancy Free #Z$POUFNQPSBSZ&YQSFTTJPOT 24 sept – 20 nOV Contemporary Expressions was formed in 2006 to bring together local textile designer-makers under one umbrella. This was to progress individuals’ work, and also to work as a group to provide challenges and to exhibit their work more widely. Supporting each other helps to progress the work beyond the boundaries of traditional patchwork and quilting. Members of the group come from a variety of textile backgrounds, with some having City & Guilds, in either embroidery or quilting. This is the group’s second exhibition in this exciting museum. This time they

looked at the shoes from the 1920’s and 1930’s and used the photos taken as design sources. The shoes will be on show in the exhibition and each quilt or 3-D object will be able to be referenced back to its origin. The collection of work is titled ‘Footloose and Fancy Free’

Now in its sixth year, the impetus for holding an annual exhibition came originally from local artist Alec Riddett, who sadly passed away a few years ago. He had organised the event for the Great Bowden Festival in 2004 to showcase the villagers’ artistic talent, and when asked why he didn’t organise one every year he replied, “You do it!” Thus was born the Great Bowden Visual Arts Group. But do our crimbo greetings have to be in a card when there are so many forms of communication – email, text messaging and electronic or ecards? Which is best and which conveys the true meaning of Christmas? Maybe they are all the same.

Well, according to the University of Salford Christmas Card Survey, this is emphatically not the case the good old fashioned Christmas card is very much here to stay! *68% of people who responded to their survey said they would rather receive a traditional card instead of an e-card, and 74% said they would prefer to send traditional card instead of an e-card.

* 58% of respondees believed that e-cards are greener and cheaper than traditional cards but 71% believed they are more impersonal, 61% felt that they were less traditional, and 64% said that they were difficult to display. You can download the complete report at www.cntr. salford.ac.uk/comms/xmas/vote. Christmas Cards are a great way to say to family and friends and business associates that you care about them or say thankyou, and they are also a powerul part of the business marketing mix. Every business should consider sending christmas cards to say thanks for the business and strenghthen client relationships going into the new year. Reliability and proven track record come top of the list. The ability to project manage an entire job is vital: in building work, you need a contractor who can quickly pull in people from associated trades, so you don’t have to spend time and energy searching for an bricky, a chip-

You need a builder who will listen to what you want, who will work with you to get the job done as quickly as possible to your exact specifications, and within an agreed budget. All the work will need to be carried out to certifiable quality, by friendly, trustworthy experts. WW Brown & Sons were established circa 1895, and 115 years on they’re still a family business, now employing 30
