S

ummer is one of my favourite times of year. I love spending more time outside with my family, BBQing, sitting around the fire, and enjoying those long, warm evenings. It’s a busy season with spring activities for my girls, but it’s the kind of busy we look forward to.

In this issue of Refined, we have an Oil & Gas feature, highlighting an industry that plays an important role in our community. With the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show returning June 3 & 4, it’s a great time to recognize the people and businesses that contribute to its strength, alongside the many other local businesses featured throughout this issue.

Summer in Weyburn is something special, and this year is no exception. From community gatherings to milestone celebrations, there’s so much to look forward to. Weyburn Security is marking an incredible 100 years in business, a true testament to dedication, trust, and longevity, and will celebrate with a BBQ on June 18th. The Weyburn Young Fellows’ Concert in the Park on June 25th brings music and community together in one of our favourite ways.

On our cover this issue, we are pleased to feature Protouch Signs.

New owners Mark and Laura Missal are stepping into this next chapter with excitement and vision, and we look forward to seeing their continued impact in our community.

WEYBURN SECURITY

A look back at our history

W

eyburn Security’s roots go back to 1899, when six American businessmen formed the Canadian Investment Company and purchased 50,000 acres in the Weyburn District. The initial focus was land sales tied to settlement and rail-driven growth, alongside services that supported new communities.

In 1902, the founders launched the Weyburn Security Company to expand beyond land into insurance, mortgages, and limited private banking. Local manager Joseph Mergens helped build early momentum and community presence. In 1906, banker Harvey O. Powell was recruited to professionalize and accelerate expansion, and by 1910 leadership concluded that competing with chartered banks required a charter of its own.

The Weyburn Security Bank was chartered in 1910 and began operations on January 3, 1911. The bank and company operated in tandem. The bank handled core banking while the company maintained complementary lines such as longer-term real estate lending and related services. The bank grew across southern Saskatchewan through the 1910s and 1920s, and gained a notable advantage in 1923 when a Bank Act

change, the “Weyburn Amendment,” allowed it to sell hail insurance, an especially valuable offering in our agriculture-driven region.

To protect the broader enterprise from banking risk, Weyburn Security Company Limited was incorporated on May 5, 1926 and soon assumed operations and assets.

After the 1929 crash and worsening agricultural conditions, the bank was sold to the Imperial Bank of Canada, effective May 1, 1931. This ended the bank era while

the company continued independently through post-Depression pressures and stabilization.

In the decades that followed, Weyburn Security evolved through leadership transitions and strategic refocusing, gradually shifting away from its early “banking/insurance-first” identity. The most defining recent change occurred in 2024, when the firm completed a major office renovation and sold its general insurance business to Westland Insurance, explicitly emphasizing an investmentadvisory-led future.

Today, Weyburn Security is best described as a diversified group anchored in financial planning and investment advice, supported by property management and other operating business lines including farm and oil operations.

In a bowl, combine softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, olive oil, red wine vinegar, dried oregano, and dried basil until smooth.

Lay out the flour tortillas and spread evenly with cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle the shredded lettuce over cream cheese spread. Layer sliced onion and tomato over lettuce. Layer salami, capocollo, and ham evenly over each of the four tortillas.

very growing season in Saskatchewan brings its own set of challenges. One year it’s dry conditions, the next it’s excess moisture.

Heat, disease pressure and unpredictable weather all add to the complexity of farming today.

But while conditions change, one thing remains constant. Crop stress continues to be one of the biggest yield robbers on the farm.

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress entirely.

That’s not realistic. The real opportunity lies in managing stress so crops can

continue to perform, even when conditions are less than ideal. And that starts with nutrition.

Early-season stress often includes cold soils, slow emergence and poor root development. Seedling diseases can also create setbacks right from the start.

“If the crop struggles early, it rarely fully recovers,” says Andries. “That early window sets the foundation for everything that follows.”

As the season progresses, mid-season stress becomes more prominent.

Crops are growing rapidly and require more nutrients, while also dealing with moisture stress, deficiencies and environmental pressure.

“This is when yield potential is being built,” says Andries. “If the plant is limited here, you’re already capping what it can produce.”

Late-season stress brings another shift.

Heat during flowering, disease pressure and grain fill limitations all impact final yield and quality.

“By the end of the season, it’s about protecting what the plant has already built,” says Andries.

Rethink what nutrition really means For many years, fertility programs have focused heavily on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These nutrients are essential, but they are only part of the picture.

Discover the role of carbon Carbon plays a key role in improving how nutrients function in both the soil and the plant, yet it is often overlooked. Compounds like humic acid and fulvic acid act as natural enhancers within the system. They improve nutrient availability, stimulate microbial activity, enhance root growth and increase nutrient uptake efficiency.

“That’s where growers can lose efficiency,” says Andries. “They’re putting nutrients out there, but not getting the full return.”

“We make sure Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada get the information they need,” Nancy says. “Accurate reporting makes all the difference.”

AgriStability continues to protect farms against large margin declines caused by weather, rising costs or market shifts.

Producers must enrol and submit financial details including inventories, receivables and payables. If the program margin falls below 70 per cent of the reference margin, a payment may be triggered.

AgriInvest remains a valuable savings tool, but there are important updates starting with the 2025 program year.

“The deadline to submit your 2025 AgriInvest form is now June 30, 2026, to avoid penalties,” Nancy says. “The final deadline with penalties is September 30, 2026, so producers need to plan ahead.”

AgriInvest allows producers to contribute based on their Allowable Net Sales, which is gross sales minus gross purchases of eligible farm products. The federal government matches contributions up to the annual limit.

“Farming is complex,” she says. “Good planning protects your future.”

“I want this to be my legacy that my family can carry on for 50 more years,” Mark says.

His sons are already getting involved, with one officially on the payroll and

the others helping out in the shop. It’s a hands-on approach that reflects the values of a true family business.

F

or Robert Schmidt and Jonathan Kmita, rodeo has never just been a sport. It is a way of life shaped early, built through long days and carried forward into everything they do today. As the driving force behind Outlaw Buckers & Oil Kings, now entering its third year in Weyburn, their story is as much about community and connection as it is about competition.

Jonathan’s journey has the same foundation. “We grew up with horses and riding around the farm,” he says.

“When I went to university, I ended up trying my hand at bareback bronc riding and fell in love with the event.”

For both men, rodeo was never a phase. It was a natural extension of how they were raised.

Chasing wins That dedication paid off in the arena.

“My biggest career highlight is winning a Canadian high school rodeo championship with my best friend, Graham Stewart, in 2002,” Robert says. Still, the deeper impact goes beyond titles. “There’s so much more than buckles and championships to this game,” he says. “The experiences of travelling, building and caring for our animal athletes, and meeting so many people from coast to coast is what really stands out.”

Growing up Robert’s path starts with family. “My dad was always into horses and the western way of life,” he says. “He bought me my first pony when I was a little kid and there was no turning back after that.”

Those early days quickly turned into years of dedication, hauling to arenas and practicing whenever possible. One of those arenas belonged to the Kmita family, where a young Robert spent countless hours sharpening his roping skills alongside lifelong connections.

Jonathan shares a similar perspective shaped by years of competition.

“My career highlights include two qualifications to the college rodeo finals, 15 CCA finals qualifications and the 2007 and 2008 CCA Finals Championship,” he says. “The rest is travelling around the country with your best friends and family and experiencing the freedom of being a cowboy.”

that I didn’t like,” he says, describing a career that grew from small local events into professional announcing.

For Jonathan, it meant building something new within the industry.

“Towards the end of my career I wanted to stay involved in rodeo,” he says. That path led him into breeding and supplying elite bucking stock across Canada and the U.S., with early success sending animals to the National Finals Rodeo.

Building something for Saskatchewan

Evolving the rodeo lifestyle

Their shared history made collaboration a natural next step. When the idea for a new event surfaced, it came together quickly. “I called Jonathan and asked if he thought we could buck some horses at the oil show,” Robert says. Within weeks, the concept turned into a fullscale production.

Both men found ways to stay connected to rodeo long after their competing days shifted. For Robert, that meant stepping behind the mic.

More than a sport At its core, rodeo continues to shape how they approach life and work. “Rodeo is our way of life,” Robert says. Jonathan agrees. “It’s a great lifestyle that is rooted in tradition from our ancestors.”
