North Carolina, Rashawn Nance saw firsthand the dedication needed to run a successful small business. His stepfather owned cleaning and construction businesses — giving Nance the inspiration for Super Guys, which he co-launched in Regina in 2016. Offering cleaning and renovation services, Super Guys uses a combination of ecofriendly products, advanced technology and exceptional customer service to ensure the job is done right the first time. “I don’t want our customers to have to call multiple companies to get things done,” says Nance. “With Super Guys, you have one company to deal with for the entire process.” Super Guys’ window cleaning service eradicates every spec of dust and dirt, leaving

windows spotless. Customers who have their exterior windows cleaned by Super Guys can also take advantage of a 40 per cent discount for their interior window cleaning. Along with residential and commercial cleaning, Super Guys offers construction cleaning, emphasizing safety and efficiency with minimal disruption to your working environment. In need of a renovation? The Super Guys team can design and complete renovation jobs from start to finish, whether it’s your kitchen, bathroom, deck or other area of the home. Super Guys is proud to use eco-friendly, LEED certified cleaning products for every job. This ensures that your kids, pets and other family members or employees are safe from chemicals that can harm the environment and their health.

Super Guys welcomes anyone seeking cleaning or renovation services to contact them. As a new client, you’ll receive a 15 per cent discount. Look no further than Super Guys!

With advanced software programs, Super Guys makes it easy for clients to book services, ask questions and receive cost estimates. Communication is a top priority for the company, so client requests are responded to swiftly. In 2018, Super Guys was nominated by the Regina Chamber of Commerce for two awards — New Business of the Year, and Marketing and Promotional Achievement. The company gives back to the community in various ways, including its Back to School program, which supplies kids with backpacks full of school supplies.

id you know that over time, the air ducts in your home can be traps for contaminants such as mold and mildew, dust mites and bacteria? Prairie Dust Busters uses state-of-the-art equipment and a direct contact cleaning process to ensure your ducts and entire HVAC system are thoroughly cleaned — removing contaminants and improving air quality. “Air ducts accumulate dirt and debris over time, and these contaminants recirculate throughout your home every time the furnace or air

conditioning runs in a never-ending cycle of stale air,” says Jamee Szauter of Prairie Dust Busters. Jamee suggests cleaning the ducts of your home or commercial property once every two to four years, and more often if you have pets or suffer from allergies.

5 star ratings Two Thumbs up! I still ca not believe how awesome this company is. Not only did they do a super great job of cleaning my disgusting ducts in a house I had just bought, they also showed exceptionally caring customer service. —Jennifer Longman Amazing service, would highly recommend to anyone looking to get their furnace cleaned. Great value for the price. Excelled in customer service and were very polite. They were so respectful and helpful that I called their Manager this afternoon to say how impressed I was. Service technicians were early, clean and professional. They took the time to explain what they would be doing as well as showing/explaining issues that were found. The guys also took off their shoes each time entering the house so no dirt was tracked into the house and laid mats to protect our flooring. They were very thorough with the service and made sure to ask where all vents and cold air returns were to ensure all ducts were cleaned. Will be recommending highly to friends and family and will definitely be using them again the next time our furnace needs to be cleaned. Very impressed. —gottschall11

Many people find that their time slips away from them during the week, and as the months go by, they feel more and more dragged down. Everyone is capable of cleaning their home, however we have discovered from speaking with numerous clients that their time is precious. Minutes are valuable and spending time cleaning takes away from so many other positive things in life. 18

eturning home from an intense day at work to a clean and tidy home instantly takes some weight off of your shoulders. Being able to prepare a healthy meal in a clean kitchen before heading out to a Yoga class, or to watch a child play a sport, is almost a gift that you simply need to give yourself.

ng orPrePAring AheAD for winter

We have some clients who make sure to have a meal in the slow cooker on the days their home gets cleaned. They say it is so nice to return home from work to have supper ready and an evening to do as they please. We have learned that spending time with children or our spouse is crucial to a strong family unit. Having the time to sit with a child to help with homework in a clutter-free area allows you and your child to complete tasks with more focus and absorption of the information at hand.

Had one the best experiences today. Crystal, Katie and Chealsey showed up precisely on time, so pleasant and personable. However, their professional manner is what impressed me the most. Now, the end result of the work they did at my house, outstanding. Thank You Rhonda Dundas

I had a Tidy Time Savers team come in and give my house a top-to-bottom clean and they were amazing. I was home with my 9 month old, but we were able to go about our routine pretty normally - even naps! - as the team was so quiet and efficient. They cleaned almost everything - things I never even noticed needed it before! Seriously, my house has never been so clean. Would totally recommend them to anyone!

In the last few years, a “less is more” approach has taken root in the design and lifestyle lexicon, with simple living celebrated as a path to contentment. The first step in embracing the trend is decluttering — a process some have taken on with guidance from organization gurus such as Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. (Her philosophy: Keep only items that spark joy.)

ut even those of us who have pared our belongings down need a place to put them. And if you live in a space with limited storage, like a condo, it can be a challenge to keep clutter at bay. The good news is that alongside the minimalist movement, another trend has emerged: storage as decor. By approaching storage solutions creatively, you can conceal or display your “stuff ” in ways that are functional and stylish.

The versatility of a basket cannot be overstated. And while these woven beauties go back to the early days of humankind (traces of baskets have been found in the Egyptian pyramids!), when styled right, they read as fresh and oh-so-organized. Baskets are ideal for corralling one of the primary clutter culprits: paper. Bills, lists, cards and random pieces of mail continually pile up, spreading across surfaces and encroaching on our serenity (and sanity). Recycling or shredding whatever isn’t needed is important, but in the meantime, stash excess paper in a pretty lidded basket. They come in a range of sizes and shades and look lovely on a desk, console or shelf. Plus, gathering paper piles into one out-of-sight spot is an instant Zen booster.

Other uses for a stylish basket? Throw blankets and pillows, magazines, craft supplies, bathroom products and remote controls. It’s like an analog app: there’s a basket for that.

If you have a small bedroom closet, organization can be tough to master. No matter what kind of hanging shelves, shoe racks and matching hangers you use in an effort to simplify, limited space can (literally) cramp your style. But what if you bring the inside contents out into the open? With an upscale garment rack, you can display REGINA & ARE A REFINEDHOMES

of items you need space for and find the right shelving option to suit your needs.

your most attractive bags, shoes and outfits in a way that’s easily accessible, keeping the rest tucked away. This storage solution works well in a corner or against the wall of your bedroom or, if it’s wide enough, in a hallway. A variety of styles are available, so we recommend avoiding the basic chrome rack on wheels, as it has a factory feel that will detract from your display. Opt for one in black, white, wood or an attractive gold or rose-gold metallic. A shelf or two along the bottom designates space for shoes, while a shelf along the top (either attached or hung separately) can be used for framed art. Hooks on either side create space for bags. On the rack, hang select items that present the “best of ” your wardrobe. You might want to edit down to just two or three colours to keep the look cohesive. Rather than filling it completely, leave space between each item so the eye has a place to rest. Consider this a rotating installation, refreshing it each season with pieces you love.

If you follow any designers on Instagram, you’ve likely come across images of beautifully curated shelves with the hashtag #shelfie. But featuring books, ornaments and special trinkets in a photo-worthy way isn’t just for the professionals! Vertical shelving enables you to showcase items so they look cohesive rather than cluttered. Rather than scattering various beloved pieces on surfaces throughout your home, arrange them all on a set of three or more shelves. Shelf displays range from simple floating shelves to entire units. Before you decide on specifics, consider their purpose: what will you display? Will they double as a bookcase? Do you need them to stash office supplies as well as family heirlooms? (Some shelves come equipped with drawers or stylish crates that can pull in and out, increasing their storage capacity.) Make a list

As with your garment rack, a pared-down palette goes a long way in making shelves look thoughtfully put together. Shelfie style isn’t about displaying every sentimental piece from your past; it’s about showcasing the “greatest hits.” Place an old photograph next to a modern vase. Pop a pretty plant onto a stack of books. (To borrow from Marie Kondo, opt for items that spark joy.) However you arrange your shelves, keep in mind that they are a reflection of you — your life and your personal taste. Let them be inspired!

CENTURY 21 Dome Realty Inc.

Bold. Modern. Sophisticated.

“We are extremely excited. These are very exciting times for our agents,” says Nolan Tabashniuk, Chief Operating Officer (COO) with Century 21 Dome Realty Inc. “We were caught off guard when we got word of the new branding, new logos and new colour scheme,” the COO adds. “We were somewhat shocked, given the history of the branding of Century 21 Global and the awareness of its brand around the world. However, thanks to the support and marketing expertise of our corporate partners, we have been very impressed with the response of our prospective clients. Our new brand stands out from our competitors, and later this year, we are excited to launch all new yard signs, new physical signage within our office space and exterior signage. We truly are becoming the gold standard in real estate.” Century 21 Dome Realty has consistently been one of the top producing brokerages in the real estate market relative to the number of homes sold in Regina. With one of the largest sales forces in the city and a highly recognized brand after operating for 36 years in Regina, Tabashniuk is confident the new branding will help to better serve their clients. “We know that more than 70 per cent of our business comes from repeat clients and word-of-mouth as our clients introduce our agents to their friends and family, so our agents are constantly staying in touch with their clients even after they

take possession of their new homes. We also know that calls from our yard signs are the second largest source of business for us, so we wanted to really differentiate our yard signage and give our sellers the advantage of being more visible to passersby than any other options available in the market.” Tabashniuk adds: “We are confident that more sellers will choose Century 21 Dome Realty now because we are giving them the ability to increase the visibility of their home for sale when someone drives through the neighbourhood. Because today’s market conditions favour the buyer, sellers are competing for their attention. The buyer has a lot of options when it comes to which home, which neighbourhood and which price point they want to invest in.” Century 21 Dome Realty is also launching all new websites, property search options, and online marketing and promotion in late 2018 to further differentiate themselves from their competitors moving into 2019. “There really isn’t much technology that has not been changed, updated, upgraded and enhanced,” chuckles Tabashniuk. “The purpose of redesign of everything online comes back to buyers and sellers. We asked sellers what they wanted to promote their listings and we asked buyers which tools they want to find their next home — and then it was built for us. I am confident this will change everything for us, and we are excited to bring the new look to Regina before the end of this year.”

Harbour Landing Village is an intergenerational senior care and living community in southwest Regina and the first of its kind in Saskatchewan. The Village serves as an integrated destination for senior living, wellness, social events, childcare and delicious food. 30

A Day in the Life s a resident, you can wake up and begin your day in your own suite. The Village offers bright and spacious suites with the option of a studio, one bedroom or two bedrooms. Head out and you’re greeted warmly by a professional concierge with your daily paper. Your next stop is Perk & Taps — a licensed beverage house featuring specialty coffees and house-baked treats that are perfect for your morning breakfast. It’s 10 o'clock and time to join the fitness or wellness program of your choice. Go back to your suite afterwards to change clothes for lunch and perhaps a family member is coming to visit. "The entire Village is a home for our residents, not just their individual room. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming place to both visit and live,” says Mayson Bernt, the Village’s Director of Brand & Marketing. The afternoon could include more recreational activities, spending time with your pet, or taking the Village’s private shuttle bus to a medical or dental appointment. You can get your hair cut and coloured on-site. With a range of salon services, Studio 3 is open to both the Village’s residents and the public. And, there is still supper and evening activities to come!

Living Arrangement Options The Village offers three different possibilities for living arrangements. The Independent Living lifestyle is perfect for residents looking for social engagement, multiple amenities, independence and fun. Professional housekeeping and laundry are included, and residents can schedule assistance with daily care. Assisted Living services allow residents to enjoy all the advantages of Independent Living with some added peace of mind. With Assisted Living, unique needs will be tended to by the Village’s experienced staff. Onsite care professions include Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, therapists and personal support workers. The third option — Supportive Living — offers the Village’s professional care staff for residents 24/7 to ensure the support that residents need to not just live, but to thrive. Diverse care needs are addressed, such as memory care, respite care and palliative care. Supportive Living is offered to anyone with higher care needs (not just seniors) and incorporates scheduled therapy services. Private dining spaces with flexible meal plans are also available. The Village is proud to bring together innovative seniors programming with Independent, Assisted and Supportive Living. Both Perk & Taps and Roots Kitchen & Bar are open, for not only residents and their families, but for the public to enjoy. Menus can be found online at harbourlandingvillage. ca/dining.

nyone remember Rosie, the robotic housekeeper who petered around The Jetsons in the 1960s? “I swear on my mother’s rechargeable batteries,” she once joked, when asked by Judy Jetson to keep a secret. While we’re still a few years away from a domesticated humanoid robot that can wash our dishes and make our beds, today’s smart home products are designed to make your living space safer, more energy efficient, and easier to maintain. Here is a look at 10 smart ways to bump up your home’s IQ.

Using an app or your voice, programmable thermostats let you conveniently adjust heating and cooling settings, but some — like ecobee4 ($249) — can automatically optimize settings per room. By sensing occupancy, this smart Wi-Fi thermostat works with

room sensors to help manage hot or cold spots in your home, detecting if someone is there, and delivering the optimal temperature to individual rooms. You get one sensor in the box, along with the thermostat, but it supports up to 32 sensors. A two-pack of sensors costs $79. There’s also built-in Amazon Alexa support via its internal speaker and microphone, so you can ask to read you the news, help plan your commute, set a timer, adjust the temperature and much more.

colours), dim or brighten a room, set up timers and other scheduling options, or remotely access your lights from wherever life takes you. The Philips Hue White & Colour A19 Starter Kit ($249) includes a wireless bridge that allows you to control up to 50 hue devices and includes four LED bulbs to get you started. These bulbs also work with many popular smart home platforms.

Philips Hue

Not only do LED light bulbs consume a lot less power than incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, and last considerably longer, smart LED bulbs like the Philips hue family let you manage your lights through an app — be it to change its colour on demand (from 16 million

Ring Video Doorbell

Quite simply, this trendy $129 gadget lets you see who’s at your front door — whether you’re home or not. Working in conjunction with a companion app on smartphone or tablet, this Wi-Fi doorbell shows who’s on your doorstep (in clear 720p HD), and you can have a two-way audio conversation with your visitor. Motion sensors detect movement up to 30 feet, and send you automatic alerts, so you can be notified even before they press the button. All recorded footage is stored to the cloud, in case you ever need it.

August Smart Lock

Speaking of your front door, the August Smart Lock ($199) lets your smartphone be a surrogate key to let you into your home. Simply walk up to your front door and your smart deadbolt will automatically unlock, as long as your smartphone is with you (and yes, there are safeguards in place, if you don’t). You can also email someone a “virtual key” to give them temporary or permanent access to your home; you can also set a schedule for these virtual keys, such as only working on specific days of the week or hours of the day (ideal, for example, for live-out help).

Google Home Max

Fusing a great-sounding speaker with a smart and versatile personal assistant, Google Home Max ($499) is one of the best gadgets you can buy today — especially for music lovers. Simply join this high-fidelity speaker to your Wi-Fi network, pair your favourite services (like Spotify or Google Music), and then ask to play a specific song, album, artist, playlist or genre. Available in charcoal or grey — covered in acoustically transparent fabric — it will optimize its sound based on the kind of room you place it in. Under the hood, you’ll find dual 4.5-inch woofers for deep, balanced bass and custom tweeters for crystal-clear highs. It’s a smart speaker, too, so ask for info, control your smart phone or make free phone calls to anyone in Canada or the U.S. (no landline needed).

Petcube Bites Camera

Keep an eye on your pet while at work, and even dispense treats on demand. That’s the premise behind Petcube Bites Interactive Wi-Fi HD Pet Camera ($199). Simply connect this high-def camera to your Wi-Fi network, install the free app on your smartphone or tablet, and then kiss your dog or cat goodbye as you leave the house. Now, wherever life takes you, launch the app, talk to your pet, snap a pic or shoot video (even in the dark, thanks to night vision support), and dispense a treat from the launcher by swiping your screen. So now you can see what your furry friend is up to all day.

If you agree big is beautiful (and thin is in!) then wait until you plop down in front of LG’s 65-inch B7 4K Smart TV ($3,295). Instead of a LED-backlit LCD television, LG’s premium TVs boasts OLED (pronounced “oh-led”) screens for a superior image including sharper colour, support for HDR (high dynamic range) and Dolby Vision, and unprecedented contrast ratios (with super dark blacks). Not only is the LG B7 incredibly thin — because each pixel is its own light source, therefore no backlighting is required — this television is a lot more energy-efficient than other TV panel types. Along with a phenomenal picture, it’s a smarter Smart TV, too, with LG’s own webOS 3.5 platform driving the performance. REGINA & ARE A REFINEDHOMES

Husqvarna Automower 315X

Why mow your lawn when you can have a robot do the dirty work for you? Sit in your Muskoka chair with a cold one in hand and watch as the Husqvarna Automower 315X ($2,499) cuts your grass with its three quiet blades. The robot can cover up to 1,600 square metres before it needs recharging — at which time, it’s smart enough to return on its own to the charging station, power up and then continue mowing. Powered by GPS-assisted navigation and by following a guidewire that you place along the perimeter of your property, the weather-proof mower can even handle lawns with a complicated shape, steep slopes or obstacles. There’s app and voice support, via Amazon Alexa.

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator

above Husqvqrnq Automower, Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, Chamberlain MyQ

This fridge may be cold, but the tech is superhot. Samsung’s Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators (from $4,599) are available in 3-door and 4-door French door models, and they house several innovative features including an intuitive app that lets you see inside your fridge (via a camera) when you’re, say, at the supermarket, and you can’t remember if you need milk, eggs or cheese! The 21.5-inch LED touchscreen can serve as a digital corkboard, recipe book, photo album, music player and more. And Samsung’s voice technology lets you utter verbal commands to ask about weather, time, add products to shopping lists, manage to-do-lists and more.

Chamberlain MyQ Garage

Turn your existing garage into a smart garage with Chamberlain’s MyQ Garage ($129). Easy to install (and in less than 30 minutes), this system lets you know if you’ve left the garage door open — and close it, if desired — from anywhere in the world. The free smartphone app also lets you open it remotely to allow someone access to borrow a tool or drop off a package, or you can set up custom alerts, such as a notification if you left garage door open for a specific period of time. The MyQ works with your existing Wi-Fi network, and easily connects to most existing garage door openers.

hese days, the table sitting in front of couches in living rooms spanning the country could go by various monikers: magazine table, snack table, laptop table, foot rest. And yet despite its versatility, the “coffee table” title has stuck since it was coined as such in the late Victorian era (as an alternative to the taller “tea” table).

Whatever you use your coffee table for, the style you choose can transform the look and feel of your lounging zone. If you’re craving a living room refresh but don’t want to redecorate the entire space, here are five coffee table styles to inspire.

The Ottoman

Any parent who has survived (or is currently going through) the toddler stage knows that coffee table corners can quickly feel like danger zones. The ottoman-as-coffee table is a stylish option that’s also safe for young ones. Available in round, square and rectangular shapes, ottomans are soft to the touch and have a relaxed aesthetic that can complement a range of room styles. If you like the look but want a touch of formality, choose one with legs and/or a tufted fabric. Want it to double as a seat? Opt for round and legless. Setting down drinks on an ottoman requires a tray, but that, too, can be a stylish accessory that adds to the room. Another bonus? Ottomans often come with built-in storage, so you can stash excess books, magazines, toys or throw blankets, helping keep the rest of the room clutter-free.

The Two-Table Trend

If your style leans eclectic, you might be partial to the clustered coffee table look, combining two or three side tables of varying heights rather than featuring one larger table. This option is excellent for entertaining, as the smaller stature of the tables makes them easy to move around as needed. The look works best with round shapes and suits a space that’s fluid and unfussy. The trick to cohesion: make sure the tables share a similar element such as the material, shape or finish. 36

seeking out a table that’s made with reclaimed wood, which is gentler to the environment. Even better, have one custom made with local reclaimed wood. Knowing the story behind the wood and the craftsperson who creates your table will give this piece serious heirloom potential.

Tabletop Style

How you style your coffee table is as important as the table itself. The trio of books, a tray, and a plant or vase of flowers is a classic combination that’s easy to make your own. Display a coffee table book that speaks to you, with images that reflect a passion or interest. Add a lowmaintenance plant or a favourite vase filled with seasonal blooms. If your coffee table is rectangular, try a round tray and vice versa. And be sure to include a candle for evening ambience. Of course, it’s essential to keep the rest of your furniture in mind when choosing your coffee table. You may love the glam look of marble, but if the rest of the decor is country cottage, it will feel out of place. Scale is another important factor for both aesthetic and function. Make sure the table (or table cluster) is in proportion with your couch or sectional and doesn’t dominate the space or look too small. A good rule of thumb? Choose a table that’s the same height as your couch or a couple inches lower, and around two-thirds the length. Happy coffee table hunting!

Typically merging a wooden surface with metal legs, the industrial coffee table is at once rustic and sleek. If your coffee table doubles as a dinner table, this workhorse of a design is ideal, holding up to frequent use with a large stature that welcomes multiple household members to gather around it. Aesthetically, industrial design can veer into the cold side, so make sure you pair this style with a cozy rug and keep some cushions and throws nearby.

Marvelous Marble

The fastest way to make your living room go glam is to add a marble-topped table. Crisp and elegant, this coffee-table trend is here to stay. While the style works in a round or rectangular shape, we especially love it in an oval design, which mixes length with curves. Marble isn’t the most budget-friendly material, so if you love the aesthetic but not the price, consider finding a faux option. (We won’t tell.) A luxe twist? Instead of white, opt for gray or black marble. It’s easier to keep pristine and looks decidedly classy.

Live Edge

Showcasing the natural beauty of wood, live-edge furniture brings warmth to any space, and is especially inviting in coffee table form. The knots and flaws of the wood slab are kept rather than cut away, resulting in an organic shape that’s as sculptural as it is functional. If you go this route, consider

DIFFERENCE is in the

DETAILS ll too often, we are contacted by clients who are in a hurry. Along with this sense of urgency is a heightened expectation that every detail be just so, that every pillow and candle holder is specifically curated (thank you, Pinterest), and that we designers can just snap our fingers and make it all appear by the weekend.

Those special details are extremely important. They are what elevate a good design to an amazing one. Yes, function is important and so are cabinet colour and countertop materials. But, it’s the finer details, the well-thought-out and expertly executed elements that make people wonder, “How did they do that?” I recently stopped by one of House Envy Interior’s client projects, for which I did the 3D renderings, and Christy not only nailed the function and aesthetic of the space, but she absolutely knocked it out of the park with the details. Chris Murray Custom Cabinets is behind the flawless execution of those design details. Sleek black cabinets were enhanced by both beveled shaker and recessed beaded door styles, accented with brushed gold cabinet pulls. Taking it one step further, the cabinets were done in a face-framed style. Large crown moulding and heavy, furniture-style toe kicks add another layer of detailed craftsmanship. It is essential to choose fixtures that complement the style of the room rather than choosing what’s trendy for right now. A brushed gold bridge faucet sits atop a cast iron farmhouse sink. A peekaboo oak adds that depth of amazing detail. Bringing in a slight change of material is an effective way to visually separate different zones in a space. The bar backsplash received an antique mirror finish brought in from Montreal rather than the marble herringbone that was applied to the other walls in the room — classy, beautiful and curated. That

same antique mirror was also applied to the upper cabinets in the bar area, instead of clear glass you might expect. The key is how these details lean more to the unexpected side. Speaking of backsplash, the material and pattern are extremely important details. This kitchen is classic, classy and luxurious. A beautiful marble tile in a small herringbone pattern with a brushed gold (yes, gold) tile edge was the perfect accent to the black cabinet work. I love all things tile, including a good classic subway. Would a subway have worked here? Sure it would have been okay, but you’re not going for okay and neither are we.

The marble herringbone backsplash is classic, luxurious and reminiscent of grand kitchens from years gone by. In this particular space, it is also a bit understated for good reason; it’s not the feature, and it wasn’t meant to be. The custom hood atop the professional range is the standout on the wall. The backsplash serves as an accent or another layer (and a well thought out one, at that). Inspiration for these finishing details can come from many different places. We pull inspiration from spaces we see when we travel; restaurants and lounges offer up great detail work when it comes to design elements. We pull inspiration from fabrics we see, from colours in nature, from other designers (yes, it’s true), and from our clients. We have quite a collection of inspiration files going at any given time, but to put together a flawlessly executed and detailed home means taking a step back, taking a breath, and taking that extra time to truly design out those extra-special features — and then, let the craftsmen take the time to bring those ideas to life for a space that transcends the trends. Trust us, it’s worth it.

ranite and quartz provide a timeless yet modern look to any home. Whether you’re looking to update the kitchen, the bathroom or the fireplace, stone is an unmatchable choice. And Regina’s CNG Stone Products is the only source for gorgeous granite and quartz. “We work hard to provide the best selection of stone,” says owner Scott Tresek. “The only way to appreciate it is to see it.” While granite is still popular choice for countertops, quartz is another amazing option. Quartz, with its marble-like looks and good durability, is great for everyday use. “While marble is beautiful, it’s too soft and easily scratched,” says Scott. “However, quartz has a marble look without the marble issues.”

w c a Whatever you’re looking for, CNG Stone is home to more than 100 colours of granite and hundreds of colours of quartz. The selection is astonishing, and if CNG doesn’t have what you want (which is unlikely), they can find exactly what you’re looking for. They can arrange appointments for warehouse viewing in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. If you’re willing to travel, they will help you find you more options until you’re happy.

f European design has any influence on the Canadian market, the next big thing in entertainment will be the kitchen island. Sure, kitchen islands aren’t new, but recent technical and design advances are elevating the kitchen island from merely functional work zone to highly desirable entertainment centre.

From pop upbars to pop open kitchens On a recent visit to the biennial international EuroCuccina2018 show in Milan, Italy I saw the future. The show attracts innovative kitchen and bathroom manufacturers from around the world. I was amazed and amused. Some trends are crazy fun, like pop up bars from the depths of the island counter. With a push of a button a square section of the counter rises, revealing a well-lit, multi-tiered ample bar complete with bottles and glasses. I was also surprised to see a modern, large box with French doors open to reveal a modern, functional u-shaped kitchen, complete with wine fridge!

Heart of the home, life of the party In Europe, the kitchen island has become the true heart of the home — functionally, visually and socially. Where good food and drink is respected, almost revered, the island is seen as the place where we come together to eat, drink, enjoy and discuss. Modern, sleek, custom-furnished islands dominate the room in European design while the rest of the kitchen seems to disappear.

The kitchen is disappearing Appliances are built in, paneled and blended into unembellished cabinetry. Door handles, knobs and pulls

are virtually non-existent; cabinets lack profile or details, the kitchen as we know it simply recedes into the background. In fact, upper cabinetry has disappeared altogether. Ergonomically-speaking, tall upper cabinetry isn’t convenient for all, especially when it comes to Universal Design — design for all abilities. Instead, open shelving with decorative displays and plant walls are in fashion. What remains is a custom-designed, finely crafted piece of furniture that coordinates with your main living space to act as the main focus — a magnet for social gatherings.

Where’s the work zone? Where is all the work done? Pantries are expanding, or a second pantry is being added to handle storage, prep and clean up. Counters are being added to accommodate working, smaller appliances, so the messy work is performed behind closed doors — the function of the scullery back in the day.

Deserted island? So, what’s left? Islands will still feature sinks, but come equipped with covers to seamlessly hide all functional components. Cooktops are still popular; most were induction-based, so heat doesn’t transfer. Vent hoods, now a decorative and functional feature in many of our kitchens are being replaced with downdraft systems that disappear when not in use. Gone were the all-white kitchens, many of the built-in walls featured contrasting islands. Beautifully-crafted drawers of varying depths replaced doors. Grey and black, the popular colours, were mixed with natural wood tones or dark wood. Customized niches, lighting and drawer facings added to the island charm.

Island hopping When one island simply isn’t enough, many kitchens featured a second; one for some function, the other strictly for entertaining. The second island allows for extra seating and can be used for buffets, bars and décor. Underneath, the extra storage can hold serving ware, bar fridges and warming drawers for hors d’oeuvres. Party central! We may not be ready for these changes in how we live. We like our appliances and give them prominent space in our kitchens. But don’t say you weren’t warned! ccording to the Appraisal Institute of Canada, and Tree Canada, trees are not just important for the environment; they have real value when it comes to your actual home. Trees on your property can be worth more then $19,000 and save you more than $175 per year on your energy bills. • Current research shows that homebuyers prefer houses on streets that have trees. In fact, properties with healthy mature trees show an increased value of between three and five per cent over homes that have none. This means that on the average Canadian home, those trees are worth between $10,500 and $19,000.

• Trees are nature’s outdoor climate control but they also impact the inside of your home. A well-placed tree that shades your home in the hot summer months can save you up to $55 each year, and an additional $120 in winter heating costs. When it comes to the winter months, most homeowners would rather be inside under a blanket beside a fireplace. Unfortunately, there are a lot of outdoor jobs that get pushed off into spring that really should get done right now. Once the leaves have fallen off your shrubs and bushes, its time to prune and reshape. Before you go crazy however, scratch the surface of the plants to make sure that there is no green under the bark. If it’s all dried out, then that branch can be removed without causing the plant any serious damage. This is also the perfect time to bring in your arbourist to tackle any of the

For the last few years, I’ve been getting more homeowners questioning the large trees in their yards. After ice storms, hurricane force winds, and now record snowfalls, the trees on our properties have taken quite a beating. Before you decide to get rid of your trees in favour of less yard work, there are a few things you might want to consider.

lOcatiOn is the Key With stOrage

Having storage in the backyard is always a good thing. A shed is the perfect solution for all those awkward items that don’t seem to fit anywhere else such as wheelbarrows and grass-covered mowers. Unfortunately, we have a bad habit of putting our sheds in the worst possible locations. Too often, I see the garden shed at the back of the property or on the other side of elaborate gardens. Neither are ideal locations when you need to get something out a FOcal POint in the of the shed in the middle of winter. The other OF the yard missed opportunity for a shed is the privacy it I’m not sure where the idea started tha can create. The type of tree makes a big difference when it comes to valuation. Trees that don’t do well in an urban setting can negatively impact the homes around them. Species such as willow, poplar, balsam fir and Manitoba maple all have less than desirable qualities, making them better for rural locations. The best deciduous trees for home valuation continue to be the ones with great fall colour like Autumn Blaze Maple or the slower growing varieties such as oaks because they provide more shade and stay healthier longer. The location of your trees is also important. If you are planting new trees next spring around your home, use these simple tips as a good general guideline for placement. • Evergreens and conifers should be placed on the north side of your property. That way they help to block the cold winds in the wintertime. To maximize their effectiveness, don’t plant your evergreens in a straight line. Instead, stagger then in a zigzag pattern.
