Old Tom Morris (1821-1908) - Born in St. Andrews, was an apprentice to Allan Robertson, placing second in the first Open Championship in 1860. He took champion honors the following years in 1861, 1862, 1864,1867, making him, still, the oldest Open Champion at 46 years of age. He was a renowned greenkeeper and course designer, establishing the practices of, including others, top-dressing the greens, managing hazards and standardizing course length to 18 holes, reducing St. Andrew’s original 23. The 18th hole at the old course is named for him.
