Remembering Jim Simonds Normally this page is filled up with an insightful article from our editor Jim Simonds. As many of you know, Dr. Simonds has been courageously battling cancer for several years, yet it never dimmed his humor or his smile. Even after stepping away from his periodontic practice, he continued to be an instructor at UCSF. I regret to say that our friend Jim Simonds lost his battle with cancer on April 3, 2021. He is survived by his wonderful wife Judge Dana Simonds and their two children Daniel and Michelle. James Alan Simonds was born in Long Island NY in 1950. He graduated from Boston University in 1972 with a degree in Philosophy. He entered Tufts University in Boston and received his DMD in 1975. After spending two years in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, he went on to Louisiana State University to

complete his periodontal training in 1979. Dr. Simonds went on to practice in Santa Rosa. He took an active role in REDS becoming president in 2008. He was a long-time editor of our newsletter. Michael Perry commented that shortly after his arrival from Orange County, Dr. Simonds encouraged him to take an active role in the dental society which he did and continues to do. Jim Simonds was passionate about his patients and his Porsche as well as many other interests. He was an early proponent of green energy placing solar panels on his office and his home. He was an author of a well-received book on periodontics for the benefit of the general practitioner. He was an inventor of a device that once attracted the interest of Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Simonds participated in several

House of Delegates events with the California Dental Association representing the Redwood Empire Dental Society. Dr. Simonds became a clinical associate professor of periodontology at UCSF (while nearing the end of his career), fulfilling a goal of being a teacher. Jay Uemura DDS worked together with Jim Simonds in their periodontal practice on Steele Lane in Santa Rosa for 15 years. He recounted how he would bring humor into most every part of his work including after a procedure as he spoke with the patient and the staff. As a natural philosopher he enjoyed speaking sometimes at length with his patients over the issues of the day. Past president Anthony Fernandez said of him “He was the conscience of REDS”. So many in our community have benefited from their encounters with Jim Simonds. He will be missed. REDS will also be donating $500 to the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Redwood Empire Dental Society members, the patient data you possess is valuable. Becker’s Healthcare Review recently reported that medical records are being sold for up to $1,000 per record on the dark web. Recently, a healthcare provider in Northern California fell victim to a hacking incident. The data breach resulted in hackers getting access to over 900 patient records including dental records, payment information, and social security numbers. Not being proactive, is no longer an option. Our concern is, if they can be hacked, so can you. As a result, PCIHIPAA is a compliance provider and a sponsor of the Redwood Empire Dental Society; and the best way to protect your practice and reputation. Today, it is more important than ever we help our members understand the risks surrounding HIPAA compliance and cyber-security. We vetted many compliance providers and believe PCIHIPAA’s OfficeSafe solution is the best in the industry. Their program is easy to implement and balances time and costs effectively. They offer savings, convenience and peace of mind for HIPAA, OSHA and Payments Compliance. To start, we strongly recommend each member take the HHS mandatory 2021 HIPAA Risk Assessment. PCIHIPAA has sponsored the Redwood Empire Dental Society to complete this with you at no cost (a $1,200 value). You will receive: ● ● ●

26-page HIPAA Risk Report; A 30-minute compliance review; and A simple checklist that outlines next steps you can take.

It’s easy to get started. Just go to to complete your assessment. We urge all members to complete their 2021 HIPAA Risk Assessment as soon as possible. I guarantee you will learn common vulnerabilities facing our industry. If you have any additional questions, please call PCIHIPAA at (800) 588-0254 and let them know you are a Redwood Empire Dental Society member.
