A BIT ABOUT US‌ PLANTING THE SEED OF FUTURE FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE RedSTART is a financial education charity aiming to address the lack of financial literacy in young people and how it is affecting their future wellbeing. We are passionate about improving the future financial security of young people.

Our goal is to help 1 million children and young people to budget, save and give back by 2025. We offer three hour Money Matters workshops for key stage II students. Schools come into the offices of our partner organisations to experience a fully interactive session led by RedSTART volunteers. Our materials have been delivered to 5480 students at 80 schools in London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Brighton and Los Angeles. We have been a registered charity since 2016.

Why RedSTART? →Levels of financial literacy in the UK are poor and getting worse. In a recent survey of under 25s, 42% did not know the difference between being in credit and overdrawn, and more than a third did not know the correct meaning of APR.

→All this is at a time when future financial security is increasingly becoming the responsibility of the individual rather than the employer. For example, with the movement away from Defined Benefit pension schemes to Defined Contribution pension schemes and the introduction of tuition fees and student loans. →Through our RedSTART programme we hope to improve the financial literacy of young people and give them the tools they need to take control of their financial future.

What sessions do we offer? What have we done so far? We have run initiatives for all ages between 7-18 years old: ✓ “Moneyssentials” sessions for 14-18 years olds, with teaching material hosted on Twinkl, the country’s most popular teaching website. ✓ Early-years trials of our primary school Money Matters sessions with 7-8 years olds. ✓ Partnering with Worcesters Primary School to create the Oak Bank – a school bank run by and for pupils. What are we doing now? We are currently focusing on our Money Matters Teaching sessions. We aim to reach children in our own RedSTART sessions and in the classroom. ✓ Our volunteer-led Money Matters sessions are fully interactive, and take place in the offices of our partner organisations around the country. ✓ Our teacher-led Money Matters sessions are a series of bitesized lessons which teachers can use in the classroom.

WHAT DAYS DO WE CURRENTLY RUN FOR 8-12 YEAR OLDS? INTERACTIVE AND HIGH IMPACT FINANCIAL EDUCATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

For primary school students, we have developed a fully interactive RedSTART financial education game alongside young people’s charity Inspirational Youth called “Money Matters”.

1. Students start the day with £500 of virtual money, and have options to invest it, save it in a bank, or play a series of games in which they can make or lose money. 2. Between each of the four sessions of gameplay, we teach different principals of saving and investing, focusing on the concept of risk and reward.

3. At the end of the day, the saver who has grown their money the most will be the winner!

WHAT HAVE WE DONE RECENTLY? – THE OAK BANK

Over the last two academic years we have worked closely with Worcesters Primary School (one of our case study schools) to provide our Money Matters sessions to a large proportion of the students in the school.

The school wanted to build on the work that we had been doing with the pupils, and so they asked us to help them develop their own bank. This gave us the opportunity to build on our sessions with a project that aims to encourage pupils to practice earning, saving and spending within a school environment.

Oak Bank in action

What did the project involve? •

Creating a self-contained micro-economy for the primary school which supported c.540 children. To do this we converted three storage sheds to create:

• •

The Bank – where students invest their money The Shop – where students can purchase items with the money they have saved; The Showroom – where new products like books and stationary are displayed, encouraging students to plan their saving ready to purchase in the future.

To coincide with the The Oak Bank’s opening, RedSTART volunteers at Redington also developed an app, which enables the school to manage the bank accounts and calculate any interest earned.

The school has also established a pretend currency system whereby pupils will receive “acorns” for a range of things such as good behaviour and contributing in lessons. This currency can then be ‘banked’ in a choice of two accounts:

By combining this digital technology with the physical bank, it is hoped that financial education can be brought to life in a new and innovative way.

A current account with instant access, but no interest paid; or A savings account which earns interest but has limitations on when funds can be withdrawn.
