How did you get into acting? I cannot say it's in my DNA. My father wanted to become an actor and he did try his luck in Mumbai. Unfortunately, nothing worked. Somewhere unknowingly the desire got in me. The love for acting began when I was nearly 12 years old. I told my mom I wanted to be an actress; it was not easy for me as I hail from a big conservative family. So, after college, I moved to Mumbai.
Tell us about your early life I am a Punjabi girl from Delhi. I pursued a course in Mass Communication.
By Swarnalata Pothapragada
The Daring Damsel
or Payal Rajput, the calling was always cinema. Backed by conďŹ dence and hard work, the daring and pretty Payal started off her career with advertisements, later graduated to TV serials and then landed in movies. After a successful stint with Punjabi ďŹ lms, she debuted into Telugu cinema with RX 100 and rest, as it is said, is history. Her bold and conďŹ dent portrayal of Indhu not only made her win the hearts of the audience but also got her the recognition in the industry. Yet, a short chat with her reveals that she is completely the opposite of the character Indhu. She is sweet, warm and simple.
RX100 is a blockbuster. How do you feel about it? It's like a dream come true. It has redefined me and given me recognition, popularity and monetary benefits. I am not a Telugu girl yet the audience showered me with love. The success boosted my morale to the next level making me more focused and selective of my next projects.
Facing the camera for the first time? It was a satisfying moment. But working in ads quite different from working in movies. Both are acting but the pressure, expectation and reach in cinema are more compared to anything else.
From small screen to the big screen I worked on TV for three years. Things get monotonous and you might lose interest. That was when I started doing Punjabi films. Later, I got a call from Ajay Bhupathi for RX 100.
Initial struggle Five years ago when I went to Mumbai, I had a few friends. Yet, within 15 days I started getting work. There was not much of a struggle.
Family & fans' reactions The audience is extremely sensible and knows a good performance. A few people in Punjab cinema were upset with my choosing this role. But there were others who sent me a message that they could relate to it. My father hasn't seen the movie but my mother did. We saw the movie in Devi theatre which was houseful. I was nervous about she
Future projects? I have signed a Telugu movie with a woman-centric plot. The script is perfect for me.
Controversial scenes It was challenging. To some scenes I reacted, "Gosh! What am I doing?" Ajay kept telling me to act and think like a boy. I took it in the right spirit and followed his advice. I can recall there was this dramatic scene. I wasn't able to perform as I didn’t know the language. I was upset. Ajay then told me that I should say the dialogues in Hindi and I would then get the right expression.
Party animal/home lover? I used to be a party animal but now I wish to go home once I pack up.
If not an actor? Nothing I can think of
Actor: In Telugu- Prabhas and Hindi- Rajkumar Rao.
Destination: In India Kashmir, Abroad-Paris
Cuisine: Rajma chawal
...Sport Not a sports person. But yes I love working out.
Your friends describe you? Beautiful devil Best advice you got It is from my mother- Have patience. Love all.
Wardrobe essentials Lipstick, perfume and tissue paper
Message to fans It feels surreal. All I can say is a big thanks and keep loving me more and more. I shall do my best to live up to their love and expectations.
What is success for you? There is no shortcut. Hard work with patience is the mantra. You need to groom yourself & be passionate.

would react. The first kissing scene came and she said, "It's ok ma." As the scenes followed, the whole theatre was whistling. I had tears in my eyes. When we came out, I was shivering expecting a tongue-lash from her. But her accepting it, had me in tears.
How did it happen? I wanted to do a south film and was waiting for the right script. A lot of movies came my way but the roles did not interest me. When Ajay told me the script, I wondered how could I play this role as I had always played a sweet girl.

Use sunscreen regularly or mild dermatological creams at night prescribed by the dermatologist. Maintain the skin with micro derma abrasion once in a month to exfoliate superficial dead skin and tan. Remember: Good skin is a result of good maintenance.
Generally sunrays are stronger between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Use a sunscreen which has minimum SPF of 30 and has UV A and UV B protection. Reapply the sunscreen every three hours.
Use hats with broad bream, umbrellas, stoles, sunglasses along with sunscreen on days when you have more sun exposure or on a beach holiday.

A LIFE TIME CONTRACT WITH COMMITMENT AND
UCCESS By V. Sarada
he humongous fleet of miniature automobiles on display in his chic office
gives away his obsession. “Well, of late, I have been facing a teenyweeny competition from Vivaan, my two-year-old grandson. He takes away a car or two whenever he honours me with a visit, and I stealthily rescue them from his clutches and park them back,” complains Dr.Kumar Raja, breaking delightfully into a childlike laughter.
If that speaks for his fascination for automobiles, his in-depth knowledge of it is reflected in his earning a doctorate degree and penning the book Indian Automobile Industry – Prospects and Retrospects. However, the founder and MD of K Kumar Raja Projects (P) Ltd., forayed into a field totally unrelated to his passion and made it to the top. His groundbreaking
Crucial decision Obtaining a degree in mechanical stream from AU, I joined BHPV (now BHEL) as a design engineer. But I resigned & oated my own company in 1986. It was certainly a (mis)adventure for a person who neither had prior knowledge nor background of the business. Yet, a desperate craving to be on my own made me go for this calculated risk.

Projects The then booming LPG cylinder making unit looked like the right option. However, my overtures were spurned though I had all the required clearances. When one door closes the other opens and I got my first break with Military Engineer Services (MES) which gave me small orders in mechanical and electrical projects. My engineering and MBA degrees stood me
in good stead. Within five years, I could break even, bagging bigger technologyoriented projects like setting up substations, power transmission lines and special electrical works. Projects and customers Impressed by our performance, MES upgraded me in the enlistment line in quick succession and I reached the super special class. We got ISO 90012015 certificate and have served an impressive array of customers. We have executed several turnkey engineering projects for nearly 25 organisations like Defence, DRDO, Nuclear Power, Power Grid, Baba Atomic Research, Airport Authority of India, Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, ONGC, Steel Plant, Maharashtra Electricity Board, APSEB & Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation. We take up construction of civil and technical buildings too.
Hiccups Getting into the field itself is a daunting task as nobody takes you seriously till you execute a project and to do so, you need to have a project. It is a catch22 situation. Your peers, fearing competition, don’t cooperate.
mandates maintenance for seven years.
Bihar and UP The projects in Bihar & UP, especially in the Poolan Devi constituency, Mirzapur, were intimidating. People used to move around with guns. Of course, we emerged unscathed.
Unforgettable experience I had the rare honour of working with former President the late Dr.Kalam for a classified project when he was serving as the scientific advisor to the Defence Minister. I recently met President Mr.Ram Nath Kovind & Chiefs of defence wings in the capacity of the Life Member of Academic Senate, AU. I am involved in AUDefence Joint Education and Research programme.
Staff and stock We have 200 technical staff on our rolls and hire contingent men as per requirement. We are often given the onus of postproject maintenance. Now, we have a contract with Airport Authority, Kolkata, which
Demonetisation & GST Demonetisation brought about only one change in our work. Earlier, we were paying our labour in cash and now we issue cheques. GST will end many ambiguities. Honest tradesmen need not fret over it.
Government sops We should not sit at home and expect the government to come to our doorstep to help. Go to it with a good project and you are sure to get all the support. For instance, recently a boy from Hyderabad approached the state with a concept, seeking just Rs.8 lakh for his start up and returned home with a whopping Rs.2 crore funding. Youth scenario Construction industry is the 2nd largest in the country and 60% infrastructure budget goes for it. Hence, there is no dearth of opportunities for the determined youth. Our colleges produce 1.5 lakh engineers every year, but only 6000 are job-ready. I feel the students are not given proper guidance. Parents are partly to be blamed for it.
NOBODY TAKES YOU SERIOUSLY TILL YOU TAKE A PROJECT TAKE ON CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY With a market size of whopping Rs.2.50 lakh crores, it is the major contributor to the GDP and generates 32 million jobs. With 24% growth rate per year, the construction equipment market will reach the size of Rs.5 lakh crore by 2022. Challenges It is a man power-oriented field; Banks and financial institutions hesitate to loan; Investment growth is hampered by cumbersome bureaucracy and poor regulatory and legal framework; Corruption and terrorism in some areas and unfinished economic reforms. Abilities needed One should identify his/her strengths and weaknesses, and learn to deal with failure. Should hire, train and manage effective staff. Focus on customers and convert given opportunities into advantages.
TO ITS LOGICAL CONCLUSION AND TO DO SO, YOU SHOULD HAVE A PROJECT IN HAND. IT IS A CATCH22 SITUATION.
IN BRIEF Gratifying project All defence projects. The latest trends Previously, our clients used to give us designed projects to be executed. Now we have to offer holistic solutions (design and build). Smart City tasks We are given the onus of building sub-stations to link the underground cable network.
CSR activities Don’t want to publicise. Definition of discipline It is within you. Ethics I paraphrase Ratan Tata, “Ethical management is the fundamental foundation for any sustainable business.” Your enjoying a sound sleep indicates it. Chasms I seem to be bridging a lot of gaps occurring at various places and levels. What we studied in institutions is a far cry from the reality and most of the time, it is not related. Again there is a huge gap between working from the desk and getting into the field. Last but not the least, is the difference between working in the US and in India. There the work gets done by shooting off an email, but for a similar job, we have to leg it out here. Generation gap Most of our employees came to my father when I was just a toddler and so there are slim chances of them taking me as a serious boss. They are
used to a certain system but we need to modernise the existing systems and put new ones in place. I am building my own young team that understands my vision, and trying to bring it on board. It is still a work in progress. Working with father? No clashes. I accept his decisions as he is more experienced and he looks at my concepts with the enthusiasm of a colleague. We keep office away from home though both the units function in two layers of the same building. Success mantra from father Stay true to values and away from shortcuts- is what he tells me. I am yet to achieve his level of discipline. He took up doctoral studies at the age of 50 with great elan. Future plans Besides keeping this firm growing, we have a few plans to venture into other verticals. We have tied up with Best Western to run a hotel near the railway station. Education My schooling was at Timpany and Vignan. I studied B.Tech (Electronics & Communica tion Engineering) from GITAM University. I obtained MBA degree, specializing in Management of Technology from New Jersey Institute of Technology. I cleared my pre-Ph.D examinations recently. So, I am following my father’s footsteps and going for doctorate.

he venue is high-end Budhil Park Hotel and the graceful lady occupying the owner’s chair is a doctor. But if you expect a conversation on
panache and parties or medical doctrines, you are way off the mark as Dr.Shirin Rahman has her eyes and ears only for the under-served women who are victims of poverty, ignorance, abuse and alcoholism. For most physicians, who open their own practice or take a position at hospitals, the opportunity to take up welfare missions is difficult. But for Dr.Shirin, who schedules her medical assignments around her NGO Chaitanya Sravanthi (CS), it is an instinctive and intentional concern. CS, a conglomeration of self-help groups, facilitates hapless women to realise their dreams of financial independence. “That is the perfect cure for all the ills plaguing the underprivileged women,” insists the amiable doctor. It is a common knowledge that such lofty missions cannot be accomplished without at least a few hitches. Not even once does she refer to the hardships or hurdles she has faced along the way, displaying a rare passion and positive outlook. It is little wonder that people in more than 7,000 households take her name with great reverence before they prostrate before the God. Here is her story in her own words.... red | november 2018 | 48

The march Women in these localities were repressed. To make them shed their inhibitions and network, I encouraged them to form Mahila Mandals. As the member of Shramik Vidyapeeth, I helped them get vocational training too. But within no time, the strength of the group dwindled from 100 to 25 due to in-fights and ego clashes. I realised founding SHGs was one efficacious way to keep them together. I started with 50 groups & never looked back. It has been a smooth run with our office functioning near AVN College. their daughters to school. Today 90% of our women are educated and there are no more school drop outs. Basically, most of our women are ignorant of the issues plaguing them and the facilities the state is providing them to tide over their problems. We need to continuously apprise them of these sops. Liquor ban Alcoholism is the root cause for multiple ills. Besides facing domestic violence, women often deny themselves nourishment as their priority is to feed drunken husbands and helpless children. They are even forced to earn their bread, as the men spend all the money on alcohol. I submitted a comprehensive data on belt shops to the government which resulted in shutting them down in 2012. The 106-day dharna by our women forced the shift of a liquor shop out of Jalaripet. We hold de-addiction camps & counselling centers to check alcoholism. Swachh Bharat In recognition of my service, I am appointed as an ambassador of Swachh Bharat, Vizag. We adopted the Chilakapeta slum, which now turned over a new leaf. To create awareness on the segregation of dry and wet waste, I created a brigade.
Advantage My being a doctor certainly gives me an edge over other activists as women find it easy to confide in me on any issue including health. I advise and counsel as I can relate to their problems with more empathy. It is a man’s world Yes, some fields like politics and films are predominantly male domains. Attracted to Chiranjeevi’s ideologies, especially his fight against liquor, I joined Praja Rajyam. But I have no intention of going back to politics as I discovered that women were not too welcome in that field. There are three reasons – a) families never encourage women unless the need arises, b) society still finds it difficult to accept female politicians and c) political parties don’t support women. Personal note I was born in an agricultural family of Gudavalli in Guntur district. My parents the late Mr.Gogineni Suryakoti Prakash Rao and Mrs.Venkata Ratnamma were progressive in their thoughts and deeds. I studied MBBS from Guntur Medical College, excelled in academics and sports too, and was a state volleyball player. Leader always I was the first woman to contest for the position of general secretary in college. I served as the joint secretary of student union and general secretary of the hostel. I was an out and out tomboy and was generally dreaded by boys. Knot of adventure Dr.Rahman was my senior in college. I fell in love with his compassionate nature. Fearing a backlash from our families, we got married at Vizag Registrar’s office in 1974. The marriage was a closely guarded secret till my people started looking for matches for me. Then all hell broke out with both the sides making a hue and cry. My people were wary of his religion and his people did not want a Hindu girl in their family though I changed my name from Bullemma to Shirin. Since we were independent, the journey was smooth even before both sides accepted us. Career path We moved to Rentachintala to set up our clinic and later, to Macherla. We worked for the Algerian government for nine years before we moved to Vizag to settle. We ran Blue Diamond Bar & Restaurant till we shut it down in 1994 to keep in step with TDP’s prohibition policy as Dr.Rahman was contesting for the MLA post. I continued my practice till 2009 in Kota Veedhi. This created an inextricable bond between the unfortunate poor and me. The bliss Our marriage is built on mutual respect, trust and tolerance. CARE CURES By V. Sarada
n an era of vanishing family and human values, he and his kin distinctly stand out. The thread of mutual love, respect and concern that binds them together is palpable. “I never made a conscious decision to study medicine. My brother’s wish and my sister-in-law’s advice propelled me into this noble profession and I simply followed it,” says Dr. Mohan Maharaj, Medical Director, CARE Hospitals. Throwing his heart and soul into it, he has pursued it with a resolute commitment. His rapid strides in the field and his being at the top of the hierarchy in a lofty organisation speak for his ambidexterity. Yes, he is, at once, the accomplished head of the Critical Care wing and an able administrator of CARE Hospitals. He takes time off from his mindboggling schedule to relate his story. Incredible as it may sound, but those multiple interruptions fail to mar the narration of the highly articulate doctor who manages to keep the conversation seamless and engaging.

opportunity knowing that I would eventually become a tiger. I also thank Dr.P.Ravi Chandrahas who has followed me all through. CARE Hospitals and Padma Sri Dr.B.Soma Raju facilitated my rise in both medical and management fields. For a person coming from arid Kurnool, the unending stretch of the azure sea, sunny beaches and verdant hills are
an irresistible treat. The beauty of the place took my breath away. Critical Care This upcoming specialty can make a huge difference to society. Our task is highly challenging as the chances of survival of the patients are minimal. The satisfaction of pulling a patient out of throes of death is inexpressible. Fast reexes, perfect decision-making skills and “Do-No harm” actions are the prerequisites to handle emergencies and Critical Care. Learning We should avoid making mistakes by learning from other’s faux pas. Incessant reading is the only way to update our knowledge, besides observing the seniors in action. We have regular mortality mobility meetings to analyse the cases. Number 10000 10000 steps a day keep you healthy & 10000 hours of concentrated measurable efforts can help you achieve international fame. People acquire knowledge, skills and education till 30 years and retire at 60 and the goal achievement stretch that lies between these two is nearly 10000 day-long. So we need to give importance to time management.
Healthcare in private sector is costly because building and maintaining a facility is prohibitively expensive. There is a lot of disparity between the government and private tariffs.
Stress on preventive healthcare.
With industrialization, comes the threat of diseases and disasters. Hence, the focus should be on environmental social governance.
Stress on health insurance

strength and presence of highly qualified docs. To place on record, we at CARE, have successfully carried out two heart, more than 30 liver and 300 kidney transplantations. Our success rate is 94%.
Competition Nobody is a competition to us as long as we do our job perfectly. One satisfied patient brings us 100 others. So, word of mouth is important. To accomplish that, I streamline the entire process right from security, parking, reception, consultation, nursing to transparent billing; keep our staff satisfied to deliver best services and be honest with the patients and give them the best advice. Medical tourism The state should take the support of corporates to achieve it in a big way. In the context of Vizag, we should develop more tourist spots, learn other languages and communication skills along with soft skills and the healthcare should be of international standards. Doing our bit, we have been treating people of different nationalities, especially navy officers from the US and Germany. A few come from Africa for treatment of Liver and Neuro ailments. Our cost-effective packages are definitely a lure. Other disciplines Without being judgmental, I stress that allopathy is time tested and much tried. We are aware of the composition, side effects, dosage of drugs and how to ush out the excess of it. If I am aware of all these in other streams too, I don’t have a
Challenges We are inundated with critical cases. It is gratifying to see patients who are brought on stretchers walk out of the hospital. Success rate in our stream is as low as 60%. Yet, I look at it as 100% as we give a fresh lease of life to the patient. Indian scenario a)

F A M I LY C O R N E R By Chandrika Mantri IT HAS BEEN A GREAT JOURNEY: PADMA You seldom come across people like Mohan. The family is well-knit and unwaveringly sticks to high ethics. The very fact that they don’t look at woman as an object to be selected at the altar of marriage, spoke volumes about their nature and culture. My people and I were totally oored by that notion and act. Mohan is a child at heart. Even small gestures and deeds make him happy. Anger and frustration are alien to his nature. He has given me complete freedom to deal with my life and family. Till date, he and Abhinav eat from my hands. However hectic his day may be, he takes me out for a drive and that is our exclusive time. Ours is a very simple happy family that runs under the able guidance of my eldest brother-inlaw. I consider myself blessed.
HE IS ALL FUN & FROLIC: ABHISHEK “Work hard and be honest”- is the mantra he gives us. Though he has a hectic schedule, he always takes out quality time for us. Whatever discussions we have with him are all fun and frolic, not career related. He is forever cracking jokes when he is at home. I always cherish that trip we took to Kolkata.
HE IS VERY SUPPORTIVE: ABHINAV “Respond, don’t react”- is the advice he always gives us. I am the spoiled brat. My mother still feeds me; I never eat on my own. I am not sure if I will follow my father’s footsteps in profession as I am more interested in human biology. But I am absolutely certain of his support in whatever decision I take in my life and career. He is my best friend. red | november 2018 | 55

the outside world sings its paean. Yes, born with a golden brush in her mouth, Sayeeda Ali has been creating ripples across the globe and in the world of art and sadly, we neighbours are recklessly oblivious to her potential and prowess. Amending the faux pas, we catch up with the world renowned artist, who is on the verge of unveiling her art to local connoisseurs. A rare treat indeed! Here is her portrait..
Stunning strokes It is a life’s calling. There is no question of my choosing it as a profession. I can’t survive without expressing my feeling through art. I never face any creative blocks as art is a compulsion like breathing for me. I paint. Therefore I am. Stream I don’t restrict myself to any one medium. I specialize in reverse painting technique using acrylic colours. This is an age old tradition of painting on glass. This arts' most distinguishing feature is the painting can be viewed from the back too. I substitute glass with acrylic sheets because they don’t give in easily. On technical grounds, these paintings are different from the
conventional ones. The strokes, which are given on a painting on canvas or paper as the finishing ones, have to be drawn as initial strokes in a reverse painting. The artist has to master in the mirror image technique. Style and subjects I don’t think as much as I feel about it. I don’t deliberately look for subjects. Anything that gives me a sense of peace and happiness becomes my subject. Initially, I used to struggle over a composition, but now it is spontaneous and free owing. I prefer the primacy of colours over form. Price and value My collectors believe in my art and it is priced very reasonably. I don’t think of profits nor do I think of commercial aspects. I hope in the future my collectors would be able to sell in auctions even after I am gone. Success I could take reverse technique to a level where it matches the richness of oil on
Favourite composition None in particular. I play with colours. In the Lotus series, there is magical sense of life under water. In the Living Space series, it is about placement of elements in a frame that evoke a sense of rootedness of a home. Future I plan some shows in various cities at home and abroad. I am coming up with Gangireddu series early next year as a special dedication to Andhra Pradesh. Personal note Born and raised in Vizag, I pursued the BFA programme in Andhra University and MFA in University of Hyderabad. My father, the late Syed N Husain was the Principal of the Hindustan Shipyard Degree College and my mother, a devoted housewife. He was a well known specialist in Botany. I won an art competition at the age of six, which was the starting point of my journey. No subject, other than art, evoked any interest in me. Yet I passed BFA with distinction and earned the scholarship for Young Workers for MFA programme.

However, what makes him a cut above others and a friendly cop, is the NGO Lets Live he floated with an objective to eradicate poverty. He firmly believes that reaching education to the last child in the society is the only way to fight penury. His doctrine is that no student should ever beg to pursue education. Incredible it may sound, but he runs it on a unique ‘Spare a rupee a day’ concept which is being adopted by his friends and well wishers. In an early morning interview (to avoid missing his regular office hours), Sampath Narayana Pilla runs us through his vision and activities with an amazing clarity which is rather rare to find in a world full of self-seeking youth.

Genesis My father would take me along wherever he used to go and for some strange reason, it was always the ubiquitous poverty that would catch my attention. Ultimately, the turning point came when I went to a village near Chodavaram after joining the service. The plight of farmers shocked me out of my wits. There were students studying under the streetlights as they had no power supply at home. Two days later, I set up my charitable trust Lets Live on 6th Oct 2015. The first step Initially, along with a few friends, I shot a short film on child education and showed it in colleges, following which I got five applications. I set up a three-man team to
scrutinise the antecedents of these cases and selected three out of them. They are Aruna who is now in 10th standard with 91percentile; Raghu from Srikakulam who earned his MBA degree and is working as an accountant and Kiran, the son of an autorickshaw driver who earned a degree, cleared army tests and is awaiting an interview call. After that there was no looking back. Not field-specific I believe in encouraging and helping people whatever vocation they choose for themselves. •
I helped five people to find their feet in the film industry. They are doing well in acting and directing.
I have sponsored Sainath, a national athlete in 11 tourneys. He won 7 golds and 3 silvers till now. I educated him in the AVN College. Now he is working with Visakha Defence Academy.
We adopted Meghamala village, Mandasa Mandal, Palasa, Srikakulam District and are developing it as a modern village. After completion of this project, we will identify yet another village for development.
Funds Being a policeman, I can never seek funds from anyone as it would be construed as a bribe. When I started wondering if I did the right thing joining the police, my favourite hero Rajnikant’s dialogue- Enjoy the responsibility- ashed on my mind. I have started giving away whatever I saved from my wages. I even tap my parents to support this cause.
Unique concept This concept too was born out of a chance experience. One day, I saw a man accidentally dropping a Rs.10 note and a one rupee coin in the Jagadamba centre and also saw a beggar picking up the Rs.10 note, leaving the rupee coin on the road. I realised that the coin is of no significance even to a beggar. At the same time, I also saw a great potential in that denomination. I requested 50 of my acquaintances to drop just one coin in a piggy bank a day and spare it for charity. At the end of the month, I showed them how that contribution, though a trie, made a huge difference to a life. Over the past three years, this project could educate two girls (engineering) from Srikakulam, two girls (MBA) from Anakapalle and two boys (graduated) from Vizag. I arranged a meet between the donors and the beneficiaries. The donors were moved to tears when the students told them-“It is your one rupee that helped us earn a degree.” They were so touched by this activity that they have encouraged their friends and other family members to join in the One Re mission. Modus operandi I worked with 10 IPS officers. I enjoy my responsibility and never do I take a favour or even a reward from anyone. The donors themselves collect coins to be given and I only show them the deserving candidates. We don’t directly hand over money to the student. We pay the fee or buy books as per the requirement. This precaution is to guard against any misuse of funds. In the offing I have joined hands with a friend, Mohan, who is bringing all the 300 NGOs of the region under one umbrella- North Andhra NGOs, making it a single window facility. We plan a 24X7 call centre where anyone can reach the NGO that caters to his/her unique need.
Commitment continues I came across a unique wish tree at the recently-held Danotsav. If one leaf contains the student’s name, the corresponding leaf contains his/her wish. You will be surprised to know that the wishes from poor students are as small as crayons or pencil boxes in stark contrast to the wishes of the urban rich who seek I-phones and I-pads. This new insight made me re-commit myself to the cause. Personal note My parents struggled hard to keep both the ends meet and educated me and my brother, who is now working for Amazon. My father Mr.Satyanarayana Patrudu used to run a petty kirana store and my mother Mrs.Sree Rama Devi was a teacher. Yet, they never deprived us of food, clothes and education. Both of them are graduates and knew the value of education. My father brought us up in discipline while my mother took care of our studies. I studied in Visakha Valley and Nalanada Talent School and Intermediate in Visakha Junior college. At my mother’s behest
I studied B.Sc computers in Dr.V.S.Krishna College. Welfare activities While in college, I saw extremely rich students coming to while away a year or two and very poor ones struggling to earn a degree, literally eating out of the hands of their peers. Besides sharing my food with the needy students, I started teaching them. I found that the switch from Telugu medium to English was the Achille’s heel for most of the students who came from humble backgrounds. I joined the Jawahar Knowledge Centre, a skill development centre in the first year itself and would hold classes after the college hours. By the time I completed my graduation, I set a record bagging 11 jobs attending campus interviews, in prestigious companies like Infosys, HCL, HSBC and Institute of Language Management. But I followed my uncle’s footsteps and joined police force. I am here to serve the people both as a policeman and as a social activist.

Why did you enter the house? Just to win hearts! During initial interactions with my fellow contestants, I found out that participants had come on board either to experience this mega show or start a new relationship or maintain an existing one. Except for Tejaswi, none of
Your strategy? I followed my wife Neelima’s advice - “Be yourself and creative. It is important to follow your heart.” So, my reactions were from the heart.
Watch the previous seasons? I have watched a couple of episodes of Bigg Boss Hindi Season 1 and a few promos of Bigg Boss Telugu. Hence, I did not have the real hang of the show’s format when I walked in.
You have dedicated your prize money to cancer affected mothers. Why? I lost my mother Mrs.Lalitha to breast cancer. Somewhere, financial constraint was a major issue. So I did not want anyone to go through the same plight I underwent.
Tell us about Kaushal Army. The contestants with the sole intention of targeting me put lemon juice and turmeric in my eyes and even ice in my pants. But I still fought through like a one-man army. It was after this incident that Kaushal Army came into existence. Shaan Patel of Ranga Reddy started this group to support me. I came to know about its existence after Pooja Hedge and Ram Charan brought it to my notice. I had imagined a group of nearly 10,000 members. My mind was blown when I came to know that it crossed 40 lakh.
Unforgettable incidents Once a contestant accused me of touching her inappropriately during a task while actually my mind was pre-occupied with the task. I had no such intentions. Geetha Madhuri witnessed everything and stood by me. Later, the accuser apologised.
them were there to win the title.
First film I contested at Star Tourism Contest, judged by director K.Raghavendra. Though I didn’t win the contest, he offered me a role in Raja Kumarudu starring Mahesh Babu.
Modelling My uncle told me about the Grasim Mr.India contest when I was 18. I then clicked a few pictures and sent it to the organisers, got selected and won the Best Catwalk, Best Photogenic Face and All India Top Six Contestant.
TV My father Mr.M.Sundaraiah is a renowned theatre artiste and won numerous awards. I did a lot of plays with him. He directed & played a lead role in series Evanni Chedanunchu. And I played his son’s role. That was my first stint as a child artiste. Later, I got a lead role in Gemini TV’s show Chakravakam. It was the talk of the town & the only serial to reach 18 TRP. My character garnered many fans.
Formative years Born and brought up in Vizag, I lived in BHV Township. I studied at BHV High School and later pursued B.Tech from AU. I was a brilliant child- be it in academics or sports; occupying the top positions. I was a national level badminton player and even played with the likes of Chetan Anand.
What next My priority now is to meet all those who supported & voted for me. I have been signed as an ambassador for more than 12 brands. I am shooting for that. I plan to start an academy to provide a common platform for the upcoming talent. It will be a one-stop hub for the film fraternity.
Any plans of foraying into politics? I am getting good offers but haven’t given it much thought. I want to deep dive into welfare activities. I have started Kaushal Army Foundation to help the underprivileged.
Do you read what the critics write about you? I am my own critic, so I am least bothered. People will always criticise, so it is best to turn a deaf ear.
UP & CLOSE.
Work done till date I started a model management & ad film company- The Looks Production in 1999; I promoted 5000 models and introduced a few to the film industry. I am the only multi-tasker to act in 82 films and 1000+ads and walk in 520 ramp shows. I have choreographed 270 ramp shows, directed 230 ad films and held 290 events. I have hosted Dance Baby Dance on Gemini TV too. I directed an ad Star Cards which was the first to touch 1 billion views on YouTube.

serenity. Filled with fragrances of organically grown fruits and flowers, the house looks colourful and vibrant reflecting her ideology of healthy living. On a cloudy evening, filled with the chirping of birds and meows of the cats, she speaks her heart out on how she fell in love with Mother Nature, how nature gives her eternal energy and how holistic living is a must for a happy existence.
FOR PURE AND By Swarnalata Pothapragada
Close to nature I was born and brought up in an agricultural family. My father worked as an engineer in an agricultural college. I had a special childhood. My summer vacations were all about being in the village with grandparents. We used to prance about in verdant fields and farms. I have had the privilege of eating fresh fruit, plucking them from trees. I am the eldest in the family and always the first one to demand a visit to farms. We used to have a separate dedicated room where all the red | november 2018 | 28
seasonal fruits were kept to ripe organically. So, all my childhood memories are filled with indulging in fruits and learning about them. I have been an inquisitive kid. Whenever I saw a plant, I would start questioning“What plant is this?” If I ate a fruit, I ensured I knew the breed, how it was grown, etc. Thus, the seeds of interest in organic farming and living were sowed in me. Pursuing the passion After my 10th class, it was time for me to choose my
further course of action. Though our family is full of doctors and engineers, my parents, thankfully, never pressurised me to choose the conventional path. Of course, I too wanted to pursue my passion i.e. holistic living and was very determined to stick to it. That was when I chose Home Science in +2 and did a post graduate diploma in nutrition from Tirupati. Now was the time for the big leap i.e. stepping out of my comfort zone and joining
University of Toronto where I pursued my Masters in Community Nutrition. That was the turning point. In fact, all my learning happened outside the campus. Throughout my stay abroad, I gained knowledge about nutrition, holistic living and more by visiting organic stores and reading books. I kept searching for more and more information to broaden my view about the concept. Passion turns into profession I was done with my education and got married. I was living abroad in different parts of the world. The quest for knowledge continued. Nearly eight years back, I visited India to expose my son to our culture and our traditions. That was the time when I realized that there was a lot of change happening in our country. Diets were on a rage. People were going for gyms or were on some crazy diets or eating supplements. Despite all these efforts they were unhappy with their body, skin and energy. I noticed a great imbalance as they didn't have knowledge about holistic nutrition. I started sharing a bit of my knowledge. Gradually, people started noticing me. They understood that I have something useful to offer. I started holding workshops, seminars and soon Vibrant Living Foods took birth. The agenda was to make people understand that healthy eating is the key to happy living and breaking the myth that healthy foods are tasteless, and to make them realize that one can indulge in everything through mindful eating.
The obstacles People were open to new ideas. But I did face a challenge in making them understand the power of vegan food. To convince people, especially those who eat meat, about efficacy of vegetables and fruits was very difficult. Vibrant Living foods is a vegan brand but I never wanted it to be perceived so. I wanted it to be a destination for healthy tasty food. I also wanted people to understand that food makes one feel vibrant, energetic and happy. We have to accept that if we don't satisfy our taste buds we cannot enjoy the meal. Net intervention With a little logic and common sense, you can figure out what works and what doesn't. There is a lot of free information that goes around which many try. Sometimes it does work. However, one must think before trying. The thumb rule is all that you eat must be from nature. One too many players When I started, there were a handful of people who understood organic food or holistic living. Now there are many. I am a passionate entrepreneur but not a cut-throat businesswoman. I have seen this space evolving and more and more people are getting into it. My focus has been on sharing my knowledge with as many as possible and inuence them. I am happy even if I can inspire one person.
Value of food We need not make a hue and cry about organic food. It is neither abnormal nor unique. Our ancestors survived on organic food. It is nothing but food cultivated in the most natural and pure form. Over the years, we have been using the products that are grown with the help of chemicals. Not only vegetables and fruits but meat too lost purity. We complain that organic food is expensive but we don't mind paying through our nose for chemicalloaded cosmetics. Why can’t we spend on healthy eating? Don't you think we owe that to our body? We must give just the best to it. Your confidence, self-esteem and approach to life, everything is dependent on how healthy you are. Focus People have to evolve from the age-old belief that fitness is about a well-chiseled body. The focus should be on happiness beneath the skin. Are you energetic and getting sound sleep? I am 50 now and instead of trying to compare myself with others who are younger and complain about my skin or grey hair, I compare myself with my best. That is why
HEALTHY LIVING IS A LIFESTYLE. OUR BODY IS SMART, IT IS JUST THAT WE DON'T LISTEN TO IT.

However, very soon I realized that it was a wrong decision. Setting up an exclusive high-end furniture store at a place like Kukatpally was like the right idea at the wrong time and at the wrong location. The business didn't pick up and I had to close it losing a lot of money. However, I decided not to give up and with determination, I bounced back. I learnt valuable lessons from the mistakes I made. My real estate friends said they would support me as they are my prospective clients. The business started off but it had its own starting issues.
