COUGAR BASKETBALL

BASKETBALL 101 EQUIPMENT The playing court is a rectangular surface free from obstructions with sidelines 94 feet in length and end lines 50 feet in length, measured from the inside edges. The goal must be ten feet above the ground. RULES College basketball games are played in two halves of 20 minutes each with a halftime intermission of 15 minutes. The team with the most points at the end of this time wins the game. If there is a tie at the end of the second half, an extra period of five minutes will be given, following the same rules. •

Each team can have five players on the floor at a time.

Players are not allowed to walk with the ball, they must dribble and cannot dribble a second time until after passing the ball to one of their teammates. Any case of this gives the opposing team possession of the ball.

When a player is being substituted he/she must check in at the scorer’s table and wait for a dead ball or until the referees are acknowledged there is a substitution.

A player shall not hold, push, charge, trip or impede the progress of an opponent by extending arm(s), shoulder(s), hip(s) or knee(s) or by bending his or her own body into other than a normal position; nor use any unreasonably rough tactics.

When a player is fouled he/she is allowed to shoot free throws; the foul itself determines how many free throws the player will get.

Players are only allowed five fouls per game. If the player excedes five fouls he/she must be taken out of the game.

POSITIONS:

Point Guard: calls players and brings the ball down the court setting up an offense Shooting Guard: shoots the ball well and is usually known as the team’s best scorer Small Forward: good at both scoring and ball handling Power Forward: known for rebounding and defense Center/Post: known for their height as well as blocking shots and scoring

MATT NEWGENT

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

4TH SEASON: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR 9TH SEASON: BASEBALL HEAD COACH Matt Newgent begins his ninth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team and also serves as Athletic Director. Under Newgent’s guidance the Cougar’s have been ranked throughout his tenure, ranking as high as a #2 national ranking in 2008. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival eight years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2009 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while continuing to recruit quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program. Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach, Don Brown. During that season the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at the University of Indianapolis. Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at the University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001. Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis. Coach Newgent, a native of Piedmont, now resides in Yukon with his wife Christa and their son, Ian.

ELI ZUCKSWORTH

ATHLETIC TRAINER

4TH SEASON: ATHLETIC TRAINER

Fourth year Redlands Community College Head Athletic Trainer, Eli Zucksworth, is responsible for preparing the athletes for both practice and games while treating on-site injuries. Eli Zucksworth is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association. He is a 2005 graduate of Oklahoma State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training. In 2007, he received his Master of Education degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

COUGAR REDLANDS MASCOT The story of the Redlands Cougar is shrouded in mystery. The Cougar first appeared as the official Redlands mascot post-1970. Prior to that Redland’s (originally called El Reno Junior College) mascot was the Chieftain, which was chosen to correspond with El Reno High School’s mascot, the Indian. Now, this elusive nameless cat can occasionally be spotted around campus. Be On The Lookout!

JAY NIEHUES

HEAD COACH

Head coach Jay Niehues begins his third year at Redlands. Niehues came in just before the season started last year and led his team to a solid 16-16 finish. Before Redlands, Niehues led the USAO Drovers women’s basketball program from 2001-2008. Niehues collected 50 wins faster than any other coach in the programs three decade history. In his second season at USAO, Niehues finished with a 23-14 record and the Drovers first appearance in the NAIA tournament. The next season also ended with a Final Four appearance and 20-win season, a first in the program’s history.

14

COUGAR BASKETBALL

3RD SEASON: WOMEN’S BASKEBALL HEAD COACH Niehues started his coaching career at his alma mater, Southern Nazarene University. In his five seasons as a women’s assistant coach, the Crimson Storm posted a 121-22 record and won a national championship. A two-time all-conference player at SNU, Niehues was a three-year starter and is eighth in career scoring. Niehues graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from SNU in 1990 and received his master’s degree in education from SNU in 1997. He has also played four years of professional basketball in France and Brazil, as well as two years as a member of the Conoco Oilers exhibition team. Niehues and his wife Christy, a member of SNU’s 1989 national championship team, have three daughters, Abby, Grace and Kate.
