THE STORY OF RED LADY One of the most common questions we get is “Why are you called Red Lady Realty?” Another favorite question is “Who is the Red Lady?” Red Lady is the unofficial name of Mt. Emmons, the mountain with the open bowl that overlooks town at the west end of Elk Avenue.  Because of its prominent location you will find that there are a lot of things that carry the name “Red Lady” here.  There are two streets, there was a Red Lady Ale and you can even attend a very Crested Butte-style ball involving costumes and the annual crowning of an actual Red Lady.  How the mountain got the name isn’t clear.  It has been said that the lights from the red light district of town used to create a red glow on Mt. Emmons at night, but given that it would take a lot of power and many red lights to get that far, it seems unlikely.  Anyone who has witnessed a Crested Butte sunset might be more likely to believe another theory told by old-timer Tony Mihelich when he was 93 years old.  “Sometimes when the sun set just right in the summer, it looked like a picture of a red lady up there.” As the mountain Red Lady stands proudly over the town of Crested Butte, Red Lady Realty is proud to be an integral part of our community with money & time contributed to many local organizations.  While we haven’t been around quite as long as the mountain, Red Lady Realty is the Oldest Real Estate Company in Crested Butte and we plan to be here for a long time to come.
