projects you can do together I

f you’re planning to take on a big project over the summer, organising a working bee can really save you time, money and make the whole job a lot more fun. Working together with friends and family can be rewarding on its own. But it always helps to return the favour for everyone in your group and say thanks with a BBQ afterwards. Here are a few summer projects you can do together that will make a huge difference to any home and make it a summer to remember.

1. PLANT A VEGIE GARDEN Setting up a vegie patch is a fun summer project you can get people of all ages involved in. Whatever size outdoor area you have, you can grow your own healthy fruit and vege in anything from a simple planter box, to a raised garden bed, to a large garden plot. 2. LANDSCAPE THE GARDEN Landscaping your front or backyard is the perfect project for a big group. The more people that can get involved, the quicker and easier it will be, and you can split the job up between the planners, the heavylifters and the planters. A good place to start is with building a retaining wall. 3. BUILD A DECK Building a deck is a popular way to make the most of your outdoor space. With the right planning, and a few extra hands to help out, you’ll get it done in half the time and have a great space for the whole team to celebrate afterwards. Check out D.I.Y videos on the bunnings website for how to advice, more products and clever ideas.

4. BUILD A PERGOLA A new pergola is another big outdoor project for you and your mates to take on. Once you’ve drawn up the plans and picked up all your materials, you can break the project down into stages and invite your mates over to share in the heavy lifting. 5. PAINT THE KIDS’ BEDROOMS There are plenty of ways to get the kids involved in D.I.Y this summer. Painting their own room is a fun and easy project for all ages to do over the school holidays. They can start by helping to choose the colours, and if they’re a bit older, have

fun learning how to prepare and paint a room with you. You can even add a feature wall or a unique wallpaper to really liven up their room. 6. DECORATE AN OUTDOOR TABLE A simple project that everyone in your family can get involved in is decorating an old outdoor table. You can bring a tired table-top back to life with a new coat of varnish, outdoor paint or with a collage of pictures or family photos. Find out how easy it is to decorate your table with our step-by-step guide on our website, or try step-by-step decoupage at www.decoupage.com.au

most romantic destinations S

ome of the top destinations around the world to plan your next romantic holiday as voted by the team at homesguide.

BORA BORA

SORRENTO, ITALY

FOR THE LUXURY ROMANTICS THE FRENCH RIVIERA, NICE The deep blue waters of the Cote d’Azur are the dramatic backdrop for elegant Nice. Breathe in the fresh Mediterranean air as you stroll the waterfront promenade, or get an eagle eye of the whole city from atop Castle Hill. The pedestrians-only Place Rossetti is the heart of the city, with a grand fountain, vibrant buildings, and the beautiful Sainte-Réparate cathedral giving it a provincial French feel. BORA BORA, FRENCH POLYNESIA The relatively small island of Bora Bora is an activity giant, offering visitors the chance to experience a 4x4 safari, sunbathe and swim at white sandy beaches, dive in a natural underwater park among 12

homesguideliving

fish and corals, experience thrilling shark feedings, or circle the turquoise lagoon by boat. And Bora Bora is a superlative romantic spot. Fall captive to this lush gem of a Polynesian island by sharing an intimate midnight dinner on the beach; visiting the Lagoonarium, the Diving Centre, the Coral Gardens or the Leopard Rays Trench; or taking it all in from the lofty heights of 2,300-foot Mount Otemanu. ST MAARTEN, CARRIBBEAN Get the experience of visiting two island colonies in the same 37 square miles. Saint Maarten/Saint Martin’s spicy marriage of Caribbean, French and Dutch cultures matches its physical diversity: the island is both urban and untamed, with rain forest-like landscapes, white beaches, and amazing caves and wildlife. www.homesguide.com.au

MAUI, HAWAII A Hawaiian honeymoon or romatic trip has all the storybook ingredients to make couples swoon: sherbet-coloured sunsets, songbird serenades and palmtree hammocks shimmying in the trade winds. But the island of Maui has more than a few surprises up its aloha-shirted sleeve, with something unique to offer every type of couple, be you food lovers, thrillseekers or traditional lovebugs. MALDIVES Romance is big business in the Maldives, where more than a few visitors are on their honeymoon, renewing their vows or just having an indulgent break with their significant other. Almost anywhere is romantic. That said, the more budget the resort, the

around the world more families and big charter groups you’ll get, and the intimacy of the romantic experience can be diminished if it’s peace, quiet and candlelit dinners you’re after. Romance does not necessarily mean huge cost. It’s hard to think of anywhere more lovely than little Makunudu Island, for example, where there’s no TV or loud music, just gorgeously simple and traditional houses dotted along the beach, and vegetation thick with trees planted by past honeymooners. However, the maxim of getting what you pay for is still true here – the loveliest, most romantic resorts are usually not the cheap ones. BORACAY, PHILLIPINES Boracay is a small island of the Philippines located approximately 315 km (196 mi) south of Manila and 2 km off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Boracay Island and its beaches have received awards from numerous travel publications and agencies. The island comprises the barangays of Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak municipality of Malay, province of Aklan. Administered by Philippine Tourism Authority and the provincial government of Aklan. The name Boracay is attributed to different origins. One story says that it is derived from the local word “borac” which means white cotton with characteristics close to the color and texture of Boracay’s white sugary and powdery sand.

most romantic destinations.. FOR THE ADVENTURE ROMANTICS SAFARI, AFRICA Africa is one of the most romantic continents in the world for couples or honeymooners! Whether you want to find seclusion in the African bush under billowing mosquito nets, in a secluded tree top hideaway, be treated like royalty with private dinners on white sandy beaches lapping the Indian Ocean, or toast your life together with a glass of champagne at the world renowned Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, Bench International can arrange it all, and leave you with memories never to be forgotten. INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In just 26 miles (43km) it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloudforest, subtropical jungle and, of course,

a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten: Machu Picchu, the mysterious “Lost City of the Incas”. It’s easy to get confused when talking about the Inca Trail. The Incas built a highly advanced network of nearly 40,000 thousand kilometers of trails to connect the distant corners of their vast empire that stretched from Quito in Ecuador down to Santiago in Chile and east to Mendoza in Argentina. Cusco was at the heart of this great empire. Almost all of the principal trails in the mountains surrounding Cusco were built or improved upon by the Incas. However, a particularly beautiful 43km section of mountain trail connecting the important Inca archaeological sites of Runcuracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Wiñay Wayna and Machu Picchu has become popular with hikers in the last 30 years and has become known as the “Inca Trail to Machu Picchu”.

“the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays”

14

homesguideliving

Access to this section of Inca Trail is strictly controlled and only authorized trekking companies are allowed to sell this trek. All guides on the Inca Trail must be licensed and only a limited number of trekking permits are issued and must be purchased several months in advance (see Inca Trail Permit Availability). When booking an Inca Trail tour always book with a reputable trekking company and check the day-by-day trek itinerary. GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.

MACHU PICCHU

IGUAZU NATIONAL PARK The semicircular waterfall at the heart of this site is some 80 m high and 2,700 m in diameter and is situated on a basaltic line spanning the border between Argentina and Brazil. Made up of many cascades producing vast sprays of water, it is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The surrounding subtropical rainforest has over 2,000 species of vascular plants and is home to the typical wildlife of the region: tapirs, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars and caymans.

FOR THE CLASSIC ROMANTIC BRUGGE, BELGIUM Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It has more than 110,000 population covering the area of 138,40 square kilometers. Bruges is all about the romance and it is possible to visit all the places by foot, which may give more value to your romantic travel, you can have a nice walk to the old part of the city and have a drink with your partner in the oldest café in Bruges. SORRENTO, ITALY An unashamed resort, Sorrento is still a civilized old town. Even the souvenirs are a cut above the norm, with plenty of

fine old shops selling ceramics, lacework and intarsio (marquetry items) – famously produced here. The main drawback is the lack of a proper beach; the town straddles the cliffs overlooking the water to Naples and Mt Vesuvius. Sorrento makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area: to the south, the best of the peninsula’s unspoilt countryside and, to the east, the Amalfi Coast; to the north, Pompeii and the archaeological sites; offshore, the fabled island of Capri. EIFFEL TOWER, FRANCE Scaling the Eiffel Tower is a once-in-alifetime experience not to be missed. The Paris landmark recently added children’s programming, which has made what was already a family-friendly attraction even better — and the views, as always, are magnifique. FOUNTAINS OF BELLAGIO, LAS VEGAS The spectacle of all Las Vegas Strip spectacles, the dancing fountains of the Bellagio use highly choreographed water cannons synchronized to music. It’s like a water chorus line. The shows are free and attract huge crowds that ring the fence around the lagoon (particularly after dark). SANTORINI (THIRA), GREECE Santorini rocks in more ways than one. Few will be unmoved by the scale of the island’s 16 or so kilometres of www.homesguide.com.au

multicoloured cliffs, which soar up over 300m from a sea-drowned caldera, the vast crater left by one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history. Lesser islands curl around the fragmented western edge of the caldera, but it is the main island of Thira that will take your breath away with its snow drift of white Cycladic houses lining the cliff tops and, in places, spilling like icy cornices down the terraced rock. Thira is geared to a conspicuous tourism that is underpinned by enthralling archaeology, fine dining, major wineries, front-row sunsets and a vibrant nightlife. There are even multicoloured beaches of volcanic sand. You’ll share the experience for most of the year with crowds of fellow holidaymakers and day visitors from huge cruise ships, but the island somehow manages to cope with it all. SEAL ROCKS, NSW AUSTRALIA Retreat to the seclusion of an historic lighthouse keeper’s cottage. Holiday by the beach in charming Seal Rocks within Myall Lakes National Park. Discover nature nestled in an unspoilt environment. Experience cultural heritage or a romantic getaway. Steeped in history and built in 1875, the Seal Rocks lighthouse and self-contained cottages are heritage listed and recall the area in a time of timber-getting and fishing. Today, Seal Rocks is renowned for its unspoilt natural beauty – “the last frontier”. KOH PHI PHI, THAILAND Oh, how beauty can be a burden. Like Marilyn Monroe, Phi-Phi Don’s stunning looks have become its own demise. Everyone wants a piece of her. Though not exactly Hollywood, this is Thailand’s Shangri La: a hedonistic paradise where tourists cavort in azure seas and snap pictures of long-tails puttering between craggy cliffs. With its flashy, curvy, blonde beaches and bodacious jungles, it’s no wonder that Phi-Phi has become the darling of the Andaman coast. Unfortunately, nothing can withstand this glamorous pace forever, and unless limits are set, Phi-Phi is in for an ecological crash. homesguideliving

feature sydney event Truth, beauty and a picture of you. In a premiere production, Tim Freedman and Alex Broun’s “Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You” is playing at Hayes Theatre Co from Friday, 9 May 2014. Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You is about the hope you find when all hope is lost, as four lost souls struggle to find peace with themselves and their pasts. If not, they’ll just have to move to Marrickville. Featuring many of Tim’s biggest hits from a life in music this new Australian musical theatre work is moving, funny and surprisingly romantic. Tom’s dad Stuie used to be in a band. They were big – sort of. Legends on three blocks in the inner-west. That was many years ago and Stuie has long since gone to the big pub gig in the sky while the surviving band members, Anton and Charlie, are wrestling with their own personal demons: Charlie is holding up the front bar in a succession of pubs on King St while Anton just wants the past to stay in the past while he disappears into a blur of mediocrity. When Tom arrives in town from Taree to search out his dad’s old band mates, the slow decline of Anton and Charlie is rudely interrupted. “As a long time fan of Tim Freedman and The Whitlams, I am incredibly excited to be bringing Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You to the stage for its premiere production. Watch as classic Australian songs such as No Aphrodisiac, Blow Up The Pokies and You Gotta Love This City are reframed into an original storyline about love, friendship, youth.....as well as lost love, lost friends....and lost youth,” said Producer and Director Neil Gooding. If you love the music of Tim Freedman and The Whitlams you’ll love Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You, featuring many of The Whitlams’ biggest hits from their four platinum albums performed live: You Gotta Love This City, Laugh in their Faces, 18

Aspiring archaeologist Sophie left home when she was only 20, much to the shame of her traditional Jordanian mother. Six years later, losing sleep and petrified by the judgement of her visiting ‘mad Arab’ Aunty Azza, Sophie is forced to lie about her life, her career and the existence of her Aussie girlfriend Sam. Looking deep into the heart of Sydney and beyond, Jump for Jordan unpacks the experience common to countless second-generation Australians of being caught between two cultures. Sifting through shifting layers of past and present, farce and fantasy, it’s one woman’s mad, messy excavation of her own history, and her attempt to piece together the broken bits of her identity. This world premiere production of Jump for Jordan is presented by Griffin Theatre Company in the intimate space of the SBW Stables Theatre in Kings Cross, where you can get up close and personal with this award-winning new Australian play.

Taronga Wild! Rhinos is a Wild in Art event that will bring businesses, artists and schools together to create a spectacular world-class sculpture trail from the Sydney Harbour foreshore through the Blue Mountains to Dubbo and the Central West region of NSW.

From February to April 2014 a huge herd of wildly colourful rhino sculptures painted by artists and their small calves decorated by local schools will charge into town as part of a mass public art exhibition to help raise awareness and valuable funds for Taronga’s world leading Black Rhino breeding program and in-situ conservation projects. How does the event work? Businesses, community groups, charities, education establishments and individuals are invited to sponsor a blank rhino sculpture – the canvas. Artists, well-known and undiscovered, young and old, are invited to submit their designs. The best designs will be selected by sponsors to feature on the Taronga Wild! Rhinos sculpture trail. Local schools will also be able to

sponsor and decorate their own rhino calf sculpture to feature on the trail, which will be theirs to keep. Up to 75 life-sized rhinos will go on display around Sydney, Dubbo and their surrounds for 10–12 weeks forming a spectacular sculpture trail for all to enjoy. After the event, each sculpture will be sold at auction with the net proceeds going to support Taronga’s Black Rhino breeding and in-situ conservation programs.

INGREDIENTS Oil, for greasing 175g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 6 eggs, separated 175g caster sugar Sifted icing sugar, for dusting FILLING: 85g white chocolate, broken into pieces 300ml double cream, whipped Raspberries, blueberries or blackberries METHOD Pre heat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease a 23x33cm Swiss roll tin, and line with baking paper. Put the 175g of chocolate in a small heatproof bowl, set over a pan of hot water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until melted. Leave to cool a little. Combine the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl and whisk for about 5 minutes until pale

and creamy. Add the cooled melted chocolate and stir to blend evenly. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Using a large metal spoon, carefully fold into the chocolate mixture. Turn the chocolate mixture into the tin, tilting the tin so that the mixture spreads evenly into the corners. Bake for 20 minutes or until firm to touch. Remove from the oven. Leave to cool for a few minutes. Place a clean damp tea towel over the cake with a board on top. Invert, remove the tin and peel away the baking parchment. Roll up the cake with the damp tea towel to keep the sponge moist. Leave to stand for about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, make the filling. Relaxation tips MEDITATE A few minutes of practice per day can help ease anxiety. “Research suggests that daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress,” says psychologist Robbie Maller Hartman, PhD, a Chicago health and wellness coach. The process can be simple. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes. Focus your attention on reciting -- out loud or silently -- a positive mantra such as “I feel at peace” or “I love myself.” Place one hand on your belly to synch the mantra with your breaths. Let any distracting thoughts float by like clouds.

BREATHE DEEPLY Give yourself a 5-minute break from whatever is bothering you and focus instead on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling the breath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. “Deep breathing counters the effects of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure,” says psychologist Judith Tutin, PhD, a certified life coach.

the most important resources for dealing with stress. Talking to others -- preferably face-to-face -- is a great way to better manage whatever is stressing you out.

DEEP MUSCLE RELAXATION This technique takes around 20 minutes. It stretches different muscles in turn and then relaxes them, to release tension from the body and relax your mind. Find a warm, quiet place with no distractions. Get completely comfortable, either sitting or lying down. Close your eyes and begin by focusing on your breathing, breathing slowly and deeply, as described above. If you have pain in certain muscles, or if there are muscles that you find it difficult to focus on, spend more time on relaxing other parts. You may want to play some soothing music to help relaxation. As with all relaxation techniques, deep muscle relaxation will require a bit of practice before you start feeling benefits. For each exercise, hold the stretch for a few seconds, then relax. Repeat it a couple of times. It’s useful to keep to the same order as you work through the different muscle groups.

BE PRESENT You rush through dinner, hurry to your next appointment, race to finish one more thing on your agenda. Now try something different: Slow down. “Take 5 minutes and focus on only one behavior with awareness,” says Tutin. Notice how the air feels on your face when you’re walking. Enjoy the texture and taste of each bite of food as you slowly chew. When you spend time in the moment and focus on your senses, you should feel the tension leave your body.

REACH OUT A good social support system is one of 32

FACE – push the eyebrows together, as though frowning, then release. NECK – gently tilt the head forwards, pushing chin down towards chest, then slowly lift again. SHOULDERS – pull them up towards the ears (shrug), then relax them down towards the feet. CHEST – breathe slowly and deeply into the diaphragm (below your bottom rib) so that you’re using the whole of the lungs. Then breathe out very slowly, allowing the belly to deflate as all the air is exhaled. ARMS – stretch the arms away from the body, reach, then relax. LEGS – push the toes away from the body, then pull them towards the body, then relax. WRISTS AND HANDS – stretch the wrist by pulling the hand up towards you, and stretch out the fingers and thumbs, then relax. Spend some time lying quietly after your relaxation with your eyes closed. weird foods from around the world N

eedless to say: one person’s delight is another one’s disgust. From an exterior and, let’s say a conservative point of view, some exotic dishes may appear weird, if not utterly disgusting. Here is the top 10 weird foods from around the world.

#1: Deep Fried Tarantula (Cambodia) When you think of a big, hairy, venomous tarantula, chances are, the last thing on your mind is to eat it. Well, in Cambodia fried spiders are a common and much appreciated delicacy. The spiders–“aping” or “Thai zebra” tarantula, a species that is about the size of a human hand, are tossed in garlic and salt before being deep fried until crisp. Most people only eat the legs and the upper body’s flesh– but the bravest also eat the abdomen, which contains a brown, runny paste and sometimes even eggs.

#2 Century Eggs (China) Century eggs—or millennium eggs, thousand-year-old eggs or pidan, whatever you call them—are quail, duck or chicken eggs preserved in a mixture of Century Eggs Photo: Wurzel

ashes, clay and salt for several months. In the process, the egg white turns to a jelly-like brown mixture, while the yolk turns into a green-ish or gray-ish cream. Century eggs emit a powerful smell of sulphur and ammonia, and their taste is strong and complex.

#3 Balut (Philippines) Animal lovers, beware: You may be shocked by this one. Balut are fertilized duck eggs…Yes, this does mean that they contain a duck embryo. Balut are boiled and served with their shell: You pierce a little hole on top of the egg and sip the liquid contained inside. Once you have drank it all, you break the shell and treat yourself with an unborn baby duck. Balut are most often eaten when they are 17 days old: the chick is boneless and not yet really formed. But some prefer to

eat it when it is as old as 21 days and has a beak, feathers and bones.

#4 Durian (China) This yummy-looking, yellow, spiky fruit from Southeast Asia seems normal in pictures. But the durian has something that truly makes it stand out: A strong, foul smell. The durian’s smell has been compared to rotting flesh, sewers and dirty socks and is so persistent that it has been banned from several hotels in Asia and is not allowed in many airports around the world. (Photo: Yimhafiz)

#5 Escamoles (Mexico) Now you be careful next time you order food in Mexico. Those white beans might just as well be escamoles… a.k.a.: giant black Lipometum ants’ eggs. This “insect caviar” has a consistency similar to

Balut

cottage cheese and, apparently, a nice buttery taste.

#6 Lutefisk (Norway) The Viking dish par excellence, lutefisk is made from dried white fish, usually cod or ling. The dried fish is placed in water for several days, then in a lyesaturated solution for two more days, until the fish’s flesh turns to jelly. Since lye is a poisonous and toxic substance, the process does not stop there: At this point, the lye-saturated fish could kill the one who eats it. In order to make it edible, the lutefisk is soaked in daily changed water for about a week, until most of the lye is gone. Lutefisk is often mocked for its strong, nearly unbearable smell. Because of the toxic products used in its making, it is nicknamed “weapon of mass destruction,” “rat poison” or “fork destroyer”…

#7. Raw Blood Soup (Vietnam) Tiet Cahn, or raw blood soup, is a traditional Vietnamese dish that contains very few ingredients: chicken gizzards and raw duck blood, topped with peanuts and herbs. Tiet Cahn is refrigerated before consumption: the blood then coagulates and has the texture of jelly…

#8 Live Cobra Heart (Vietnam)

Montreal or in New York: It can also be seen in a soup. Traditionally eaten in southern China, scorpion soup gives the spooks just by looking at it. Apparently, scorpions have a nice, wooden taste and their venom is neutralized by the cooking process. But beware: Eating scorpion soup and especially preparing it can still be dangerous, as an unfortunate man discovered.

#10 Casu Marzu (Italy) Granted, all cheeses are kind of gross, when you really take time to think about it: Fermented milk, full of bacteria and germs of all sorts. But the casu marzu goes beyond simple fermentation. It is closer to actual decomposition. This Italian pecorino—a.k.a. sheep milk cheese—is crawling with… live fly larvae. At the end of the making process, the cazu marzu’s crust is cut open, in order to let flies lay their eggs in the cheese. Once those eggs hatch, little larvae are born, making their way through the cheese and giving it its strong, unique taste. Some people love to eat their casu marzu with the larvae still alive and wiggling, others prefer to suffocate them with a paper bag prior to eating the cheese… How would you take yours?

That meal is not for the fainthearted— pun intended. Live cobra hearts cannot be considered a common meal in Vietnam—but some people do eat them, mostly because they believe that by eating a snake live, they will inherit a part of its power and enhance their strength. The ritual goes like this: A live cobra is picked by the customer from a selection of specimens—the meaner, the better. Its head is then cut off and its still beating heart ripped out, placed in a saucer with a bit of the blood, ready to be chugged and swallowed whole. According to Ross Lee Tabak, who tried eating live cobra heart in Hanoi, “you might feel it beating in your throat.”

A BOY & A BEAN A BOY & A BEAN 19 February 2014 - 22 February 2014 jspac.com.au At first there was a boy. Then there was a bean. Then everything got a little blurry. Enter a world where giants dwell in suburban houses, beanstalks take root in corrupted soil and a boy called Jack strays between love, legislation and folklore. Jack likes David. David likes Jack. The story seems simple enough. Add to this a public debate about how they like, why they like and what they like; Jack and David become confused quickly. In this new devised work, Nick Atkins, walks head first into the Marriage Equality debate raging in current media and the controversial history surrounding the proposed legislation. Atkins follows the journey of Jack in search of the giants that have dominated the conversation and presents an open, visceral, off-beat and tender contemporary reframing of the issue. MY LATIN HEART 26 February 2014 jspac.com.au A celebration of Latin passion and music. Internationally-acclaimed baritone José Carbó is joined by Adelaide International Guitar Festival Artistic Director and celebrated classical guitarist Slava Grigoryan and his equally renowned guitarist brother Leonard, for an evening of highly passionate tango. Accompanied by some of Australia’s finest tango dancers José will recreate 38

MY LATIN HEART the songs from sheet music given to him by his grandfather Donato back in Argentina. This sensuous collection of Latin American songs was released by ABC Classics - and shot straight to number one on the Limelight Classical Music Charts as well as being nominated for the ARIA Classical Record of the Year. The program presents some of the best from the repertoire of popular Latin American songs including Lara’s Granada, Piazzolla’s Ave Maria and Oblivion and brilliant tangos such as Caminito, Mi Buenos Aires querido and Adiós. Expect an evening of sumptuous song, stunning strings and tantalising tango. JAMIL YAMANI – Made in Australia Ongoing until 9 March 2014 Made in Australia echoes Yamani’s inquiries into the political and sociocultural phenomena of social structures within communities through complex video installations. Multiculturalism and its’ role over arches the exhibition; commenting on how it implies a shared celebratory sense yet reality tells of the exclusions that divide this sense. The works in the exhibition contend and infiltrate the perceived cultural stereotypes around the social, often political, perceptions of cultural conformity, assimilation, otherness and displacement. Yamani teases out the context and meaning of the Australian identity; the fixed stereotypes that have been placed by a society that is made www.homesguide.com.au

MCA COLLECTION up of a culturally diverse network of communities. Drawing associations from Islamic and western cultures, alternate perspectives are created that seek to shift identity beyond what has superficially been demanded by a dominant hegemony. With his highly aesthetic practice Yamani explores traditional Islamic practices with contemporary art, integrating scared tradition with western architectural design. Working within two sphere’s, western and eastern is made to question how they coincide within a society that places great importance on ownership, place, culture, heritage and identity. Drawing linkages between these provokes a response, a question to placement or displacement within our society. MCA COLLECTION: New Acquisitions Ongoing until 23 February 2014 This exhibition places 28 of the Museum’s recent acquisitions alongside works from the MCA Collections (over 4000 diverse Australian works bought by the MCA since it was founded in 1989) and the J W Power Collection (3060 works – spanning Australian and international art across genres and mediums, and including The Ramingining Collection of Aboriginal Art – acquired between 1967-1989 by the Power Gallery of the University of Sydney, and subsequently bequeathed to the MCA). Consider this exhibition as a snapshot of where contemporary art has been, where it’s going, and what is currently turning our artists on.

Australian vernacular photography The allure of the everyday

Australian vernacular photography considers how photographers have used their cameras to depict Australian life, and how ideas of the nation have been constructed through photographic images. Sixteen Australian photographers are represented by some 27 photographs taken from the 1960s to the 2000s. The photographs range from the more conventionally photo-documentary through to later works by photographers positioned more consciously in an art context. A selection of photography books of the period are also on display. Artists include: Jeff Carter, Ed Douglas, Peter Elliston, Gerrit Fokkema, Sue Ford, Fiona Hall, Robert McFarlane, Hal Missingham, David Moore, Trent Parke, Roger Scott, Glenn Sloggett, Ingeborg Tyssen, John F Williams, William Yang and Anne Zahalka. Each of these artists in their own way interweave personal, documentary and fictional aspects through their images. The works in Australian vernacular photography expose the sense of humour or larrikinism often seen as typical to Australia through showing aspects of beach and urban culture that hadn’t been imaged so bluntly before the 1960s. The characters that emerge range from

leathery sunbathers, beer-drinking blokes and hippies, to beach babes, student protesters and suburban housewives,

shedding light on the sense of liberation and self-recognition that arose during this period. As photography struggled to gain recognition as an art form in the mid 20th century, the influence of exhibitions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York’s Family of Man, which toured Australia in 1959, was vital in allowing Australian photographers to compare their work to that of their international peers. Throughout the 1960s and ’70s, photographers such as Jeff Carter, Sue Ford, David Moore, Roger Scott and www.homesguide.com.au

John F Williams worked in a photodocumentary mode that was less about staging a shot or creating formal harmony within the frame than about capturing a moment of lived reality. To this end, such photographs involved minimal intervention from the photographer, both before and after the shutter release. Subjects were often unaware of being photographed and extensive darkroom manipulation was frowned upon, the rawness of prints was supposed to signal authenticity. This approach resulted in images that seemed to offer a frank perspective on Australian culture, without the romanticising tendencies of earlier photography, which had sought to construct ideals rather than document what was actually there. As artists began to realise what they could do with the camera, so too did the images evolve. By the 1980s and ’90s photographers were making images that showed the subject’s awareness of being photographed, as with Gerrit Fokkema, or presented a harsh, even aggressive perspective on the depicted situations by removing people altogether, as with Peter Elliston. This signalled the increasingly selfconscious role of photographers themselves in the equation, suggesting the influence of post-modern theories of subjectivity and their effect on the images produced. By the time we reach the 2000s, artists such as William Yang, Anne Zahalka and Trent Parke are acutely aware of the photographer and photograph’s role in pointedly constructing a narrative around Australian identity and history. The exhibition maps out this history and offers unexpected insight into the construction of a particularly Australian vernacular within photographic practice. 8 Feb – 18 May 2014 Art galleryy Road, The Domain, Sydney Source: www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au
