When I play in the world of TokyoMilk and this fabric collection, Neptune & the Mermaid, I am wanting to take you on a journey where you have to look twice to see all that there is to see. It is a visual narrative told in dreamlike ephemeral collages, realized in rich, vivid colors to mix and match. This is the beginning to a story only you can fully tell. The collection can be paired and coordinated to inspire creations that are as pretty as you please, or as unexpected as you dare— in many ways this collection is a “choose your own adventure”—an enchanted ocean awaits. …Are You Curious?

The Mermaid I Who would be A mermaid fair, Singing alone, Combing her hair Under the sea, In a golden curl With a comb of pearl, On a throne? II I would be a mermaid fair; I would sing to myself the whole of the day; With a comb of pearl I would comb my hair; And still as I comb’d I would sing and say, ‘Who is it loves me? Who loves not me?’ I would comb my hair till my ringlets would fall Low adown, low adown, From under my starry sea-bud crown Low adown and around, And I should look like a fountain of gold Springing alone With a shrill inner sound Over the throne In the midst of the hall; Till that great sea-snake under the sea From his coiled sleeps in the central deeps Would slowly trail himself sevenfold Round the hall where I sate, and look in at the gate With his large calm eyes for the love of me. And all the mermen under the sea Would feel their immortality Die in their hearts for the love of me. Alfred, Lord Tennyson 1830

Q&A WITH MARGOT ELENA Who are you and what do you do? I’m Margot Elena, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Margot Elena Companies and Collections. I’m Brand Author of several cult classic, independent beauty brands including The Cottage Greenhouse, Lollia, TokyoMilk, Library of Flowers, and Love & Toast. I suppose I am best known for my attention to the smallest details from the feel of the paper, to hidden messaging to be discovered by the buyer, and for creating brand worlds that “tell stories.”

How did you get started in the design industry? I’d been creating brands and retailing products with my designs from a very early age, literally starting in about 3rd grade. All through high school, I would create, make, and sell products, including an underground newspaper, hand-painted apparel, and shoes in independent stores. It was how I made money to go out to clubs on the weekend (hey, it was the ’80s!) Now looking back on it, designing, creating, and starting my own company was a completely natural progression; it seems in retrospect there has never been a time that I have not been moving towards owning my own fashion or beauty company.

What continues to inspire you? I tell everyone that the best part of my job is that we get to make something where nothing exists—that creating, any type of creating, is as magical as alchemy. You, quite literally, are just following a dream and watching it manifest in the physical world. That is intoxicating. So having the incredible opportunity to be creative every day, it is inherent in the role that there is literally no end to inspiration! Anything can be an amazing beginning point to jump off from—that first creative leap into doing something new is unbelievably thrilling… that thrill is what keeps it exciting.

What do you see in your future? We have a beautiful space that we will be building into a Creative Culture Center with workshops and small events that will become an extension of not only our artistic professional lives, but will be centered on well-being of mind, body and soul as well. We have the great privilege of being in the hands of so many people world-wide and we are excited to share our philosophy and vision. We want to invite our creative community to join us in this incredible journey we are on! T O K YO M I L K F O R W E S T M I N S T E R F I B E R S ¦ 2 7
