Editor’s Letter As we leave summer behind and head into autumn, we are already getting ready for winter with our great money saving tips on page 16. Now is a great time of year to switch to a cheaper energy provider, look at getting your boiler serviced, and consider insulating your home too. Calling a local plumber before they’re rushed off their feet when the cold weather arrives makes good sense and could actually save you money.

18

8

And it’s not just our homes which suffer in the cold weather either. Our health can be adversely affected too, so an alternative treatment such as acupuncture could be just what the doctor ordered. We spoke with Dr Katie Greener about the many benefits the treatment offers and you can find out why this is something that we should all make much more use of on page 6.

22

Enjoy this issue and I’ll be back when it actually is winter!

Local Spotlight

Christine Moore Everyone wants to find love, but Christine Moore - newly in charge of Just Wiltshire Introductions (local branch of successful franchise Just Dorset Introductions) - is after something more: she wants love for everyone...

S

tarting out on a new challenge is almost always a good idea, and that’s certainly the mind-set of 60-year-young Christine Moore, who’s recently taken the helm at Just Wiltshire Introductions, the Wiltshire division of Just Dorset Introductions, an exclusive South West dating agency that’s slowly expanding across the country (next stop Hampshire!). In a past life Christine worked as a children’s nanny/housekeeper, including four years at Odstock Manor (in the village of the same name, about two-and-a-half miles south of Salisbury), and at two addresses in the city’s exclusive the Close; now, in her new role, she continues to be something of a local Mary Poppins, but this time bringing happiness to a very different type of clientele.

What I Learned... 1

2

4

“I love this job! The very first lady I introduced to someone has just become engaged. Both have been members for less than six months!” “Introductions are best when there’s little pressure: with us it all starts with a chat on the telephone, maybe a cup of coffee.”

The SP4 Magazine

Christine Moore... already spoken for!

These days Christine’s challenge is to offer you – yes, you! – the chance to meet ‘someone special’ through her branch of the franchise. “We offer a personal, caring and confidential service,” she says, “and we work with clients of all ages, from 25 to 95.

The worst thing that could happen is that you merely make a friend! The best thing that could happen when you join us is that you meet your Someone Special, and the worst thing that could happen is that you merely make a friend!” Part of the deal with Just Wiltshire is that there’s no computerised matching or listings involved at all, just Christine coming to see you personally, bringing testimonials and pictures of couples who have already found happiness through the company. Plus: boundless optimism, of course. From that point on she’ll make it her special mission to find you the perfect life partner. “I feel like Salisbury’s fairy godmother,” she says, and you very much feel this is a woman who’s found her calling.

LOCAL Health

Have you ever been curious about Acupuncture? trained medical hands patients can have complete confidence. Being an experienced GP, having trained in both Western and Chinese acupuncture enables me to have a completely holistic approach to patients and their problems.

What sort of things can be treated and when does it work best?

W

ell now you can explore it’s benefits to your health and well being with confidence, safe in the knowledge that you are in the hands of an experienced GP. We spoke with Dr Katie Greener about the many benefits the treatment offers and found out why this is something that we should all make much more use of. Katie explained that an increasing proportion of cases presenting in her GP surgeries are the product of our hectic lifestyles. These conditions often do not respond well to conventional treatments but can be resolved through a more holistic approach that does not require drugs with the inherent risks of unwanted side effects.

You are a qualified and experienced doctor so why acupuncture? Acupuncture is extremely safe; there are almost no side effects, compared with drugs and other medical treatments. In qualified 6

The SP4 Magazine

Acupuncture can be effective for numerous conditions such as: ô Chronic pain. ô Musculoskeletal problems, back pain, osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and generalised aches and pains. ô ME / fibromyalgia ô Prevention and treatment of headaches and migraines ô Insomnia, anxiety, stress and depression, feelings of exhaustion ô Infertility, heavy or painful periods… and much more

There are a lot of people who hate needles so what would you say to them? Will it hurt? Acupuncture needles are very fine, about a tenth of the size of a normal injection needle. (0.2mm diameter!) In many cases patients don’t really feel the needles going in, but there is a definite sensation or dull ache, called ‘de qi’, which is generally not unpleasant when the needle is correctly inserted.

Most people are pleasantly surprised and actually find acupuncture calming and relaxing!

How will I feel afterwards? Will I be able to drive? Many patients find they feel very relaxed afterwards, sometimes even being tired enough to go to bed for a short nap. Often that night they sleep very well! Sometimes patients feel energised as a result of the treatment. However it is completely safe to drive and there are no particular do’s and don’ts.

How soon will I improve? Patients all vary – some respond quickly and some take a few sessions for the acupuncture to have an effect. I usually suggest an initial series of 3 treatments, at weekly intervals and I reassess after that. More chronic and longterm problems can take a while to improve. My philosophy is always to work together with my patients and monitor them carefully with each treatment. Please do look at my website 8 www.drkatiegreener.co.uk or ring the Old Orchard Surgery on 01722 744775 for further information and appointments.

A lifelong passionate crafter and sewer Ruth wants to share and pass on her skills and knowledge to enable the pleasure and practicality of sewing and making to continue to new generations. Ruth is fanatical about these subjects; “the aim of The Make Arcade is to make life more creative by passing on practical skills needed to make things by hand”. As a passionate maker she doesn’t want people to lose and mislay these once basic skills and in her words “the glowing pleasure that comes with ‘making it yourself!’”. 8

Magic Knife at the Rockbourne Fair 2012

Rockbourne Fair at Salisbury Racecourse Wed 23rd to Fri 25th October 2013

S

hopping, dining, socialising and fundraising will be on the menu when the Rockbourne Fair returns to Salisbury Racecourse on 23rd, 24th and 25th October. The annual shopping fair, “With Christmas in Mind”, is expected to attract thousands of people from Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset and beyond, is now in its 25th year and firmly established as one of the region’s ‘mustattend’ events. This year there will be more than 90 stands, including many exciting new stalls, with stall holders from across the UK selling exclusive and original goods that make perfect Christmas presents spectacularly showcased across the various gift halls. In the Food Hall, shoppers can taste and take home a wide selection of gourmet food and drink

from smoked salmon, delicious sausages, to the ever-popular speciality cheeses! When the retail therapy all gets a bit much, shoppers can relax in the Racecourse’s excellent restaurant. The Fair will remain open until 7.30pm on the Thursday evening for late night shopping and, as ever, there will be plenty of free parking. All proceeds from the Rockbourne Fair are donated to the Stars Appeal, Salisbury District Hospital’s charity that raises money to create the best possible experience for patients and their families by funding extra care and equipment over and above that provided by the NHS. Money raised at this year’s fair will go towards their CT Scanner campaign, which aims to raise £650,000 to buy a second CT Scanner that will benefit around 12,000 local

people each year. A second scanner at the hospital will cut waiting times, make sure scans are always available, mean less travelling to other hospitals for scans, and will benefit from advanced technology & techniques that will reduce the need for minor exploratory surgery. Jane Corani, who is a member of the voluntary organising committee, said “The Fair is a really good day out, with many of our old favourites returning this year as well as some exciting new stalls. We have over 90 again this year offering high quality well priced goods for everyone. With beautiful jewellery, lovely clothing, gifts for all ages, our food and drinks hall, there is something for everyone. Come with friends, have lunch whilst you rest between the shopping, what could be better!”

Finance

Jasmine Birtles Moneymagpie.com

Switch your bills now It’s a great time to switch to a cheaper provider as the major providers typically start to increase their prices any day now, just in time for winter. Find a copy of your last gas and electricity bills, go to the energy-switching page on Moneymagpie.com and find a cheaper deal for yourself. It’s often worth considering one of the smaller suppliers, however if you want to stick to a major supplier you may be eligible for discounted bills through the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme which offers heating and insulation improvements for low-income and means tested households. Visit www.gov.uk/ energy-company-obligation or call the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234 for details.

Boilers If your boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is a good time to have it replaced. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. Even factoring in the cost of a new boiler you could save money by replacing it now. Also, you could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through the new government energy improvement scheme, The Green Deal Cashback Scheme, which gives you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home. 16

The SP4 Magazine

Winter might seem like some time away but you can save money by preparing for it now; plumbers are often cheaper while the weather is warmer and there are still offers on insulation and boilers so start work now before winter arrives and the prices go up.

The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, even if you are renting privately or in social housing. Firstly, have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will provide you with a report of what could be improved. Then agree to a quote or Green Deal plan with a Green Deal Provider. You can find them online at www.greendealorb.co.uk/ consumersearch. Apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www.gdcashback.decc.gov. uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days.

Insulation Now is a great time to get upto-date insulation as it’s a quiet period for installers. Insulation materials are also much cheaper to buy in the summer and early autumn. Efficient insulation can cut the cost of heating and cooling by 40%, while loft insulations save an average 20% on your energy bills annually. Don’t forget you can also find loft insulation vouchers on websites like Groupon as well as applying for the Green Deal.

Draught-proofing Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to save energy in your home. The Energy Saving Trust claims you can save £55 a year.

You could save more money by taking the DIY route but remember some older properties with single glazing will be more difficult to draught-proof and if you are not comfortable with your DIY skills, hiring a professional could save you money in the long run. Check your home insurance policy before carrying out work yourself to ensure that you’re covered for DIY.

Plumbers Summer and early autumn is a slower time of year for plumbers so you could find the rates more favourable, and you’ll also be able to get the work completed quickly. Tibetan Monks to create a Sand Mandala

T

ibetan monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery will be in Salisbury Cathedral Chapter House from 9.30am – 4.30pm on Monday 30 September through to Friday 4 October creating a Sand Mandala. The process begins on Monday morning with a dedication ceremony and ends five days later with a destruction ceremony and procession to the River Avon. Visitors are welcome

in the Chapter House at any time during these five days to watch the monks as they work. The Sand Mandala is an artistic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. A mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe representing an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the

palace has significance as an aspect of wisdom or a guiding principle. Its purpose is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with healing. The mandala is painstakingly laid using millions of grains of different coloured sand applied using small tubes, funnels, and scrapers, until the intricate pattern is achieved. It is usual that a team of monks

in Salisbury Cathedral’s Chapter House works together on the project, creating one section at a time and working from the centre outwards. Once completed and the accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, the sand mandala is ritualistically destroyed - symbolising the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life - and the sand swept up and poured into a river where its healing energies are carried

throughout the world. This ceremony will take place during the afternoon of Friday 4th Oct. Edward Probert, Canon Chancellor at Salisbury Cathedral, said “I visited the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in February, and was privileged to enjoy the monks’ hospitality and sit in on their worship. It will be a delight to return the compliment, and while Buddhist beliefs are very different from

our Christian ones, it is deeply enriching to experience their artistic and devotional traditions. Sand mandalas - the monks made one here as part of the Salisbury International Arts Festival in 2005 - are beautiful and astonishing, and throw a fresh light on the art and architecture of the cathedral’s Chapter House. Please don’t miss it.” 8 www.salisburycathedral.org.uk The SP4 Magazine

Charity

South Wiltshire volunteer delighted with national award

M

ICHELE Way has good reason to celebrate, as the team she represents has been recognised with a national award.

Michele has been volunteering as South Wiltshire events officer and home checker for Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) since 2008. Recently GRWE took the title of Animal Charity Team of the Year at the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes’ award ceremony, organised by Petplan. Michele will be a familiar face to a great many people in the Salisbury area who now share their homes with a greyhound or lurcher, thanks to her work. “Michele is an amazing member of our team; always busy” said GRWE Press Officer Stuart Parslow. “Even on the day I took this picture, it took me until closing up time to catch her standing still long enough to be photographed” Stuart concluded.

W

iltshire Council and Salisbury City Council have organised a Vintage Market on Friday 27th September from midday to 8pm on the newly refurbished Guildhall Square and will be showcasing an eclectic mix of vintage, antique and bric-a-brac

GRWE won the award with a team which rehomed 616 greyhounds and lurchers last year but has just one paid employee. Rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming are carried out by volunteers who also raise funding for the independent charity. If you are interested in joining the successful team, or just want to find out more, go to www.grwe.com.

items. They have also organised live music throughout the day from Sandy Ince, Sticky Toffee Jazz with her sophisticated Jazz and Swing repertoire, both modern and traditional. Performing powerful and timeless classics “I Put A Spell on You” and “At Last” to the

more modern brilliance of Paolo Nutini’s “Candy”. The day promises to provide something for everyone, and as well as marking Purple Flag week, this unique event will highlight how this renovated city centre space can be used to enhance what Salisbury has to offer.

GUIDE

Charity Pamper Night DOGS for Salisbury and District Guide Dogs

Calling all ladies who love to be pampered.

With every guide dog partnership costing around £50,000 to fund with no government funding at all, it is essential that funds are raised not just to help the charity achieve its amazing work but also to raise awareness of the work done by their beautiful dogs, which local fundraiser Debbie Furnell and fellow guide dog owners could not live without. They really can transform lives and give blind and partially sighted people the same freedom of movement as everyone else in the community. Debbie is helping to organise a Charity Pamper Night which is taking place at the Legacy Rose and Crown Hotel, Harnham Road in Salisbury on Thursday 12th of September from 7pm. Tickets are £5 with a special group discount of 5 tickets for £20 which includes a complimentary glass of bucks fizz on arrival. Luxury pampering treatments will be available at lower than salon prices, there will also be hand-crafted gifts and jewellery, a chocolate shop, massages, nail treatments and much more on offer during the evening. All of the money raised at the event will be going towards the charity’s Name A Puppy Appeal to help fund a third puppy through his or her life transforming training to become a guide dog. Their first named puppy Rusty has already succeeded in helping his registered blind owner in Bournemouth live an independent and mobile life all thanks to Salisbury and District Guide Dogs. To book your tickets or for further information please call Debbie Furnell on 01722 335755 or email debbiefurnell@btinternet.com. 26

He was funded by the kindness and generosity of donations received from lots of various donors and is only 5 months into his puppy walking part of his training. This stage is mainly responsible for socialising Nelson and helping him become aware of the very different environments and noises he will face as a guide dog, once he has passed his advanced training. In total the whole training process of a guide dog puppy takes around 18 months on average but this can vary from dog to dog and is very dependant on the breed and personality of each puppy.

enerous Tesco customers in Amesbury and Salisbury donated an incredible 4.7 tonnes of food at Tesco’s National Food Collection recently to help local people in need. Customers were asked to donate nonperishable food items after new research revealed a quarter of parents suffering from some form of food poverty said they were unable to provide food for all the meals their children need during the school holidays. Tesco held the appeal in partnership with Foodbanks charity, the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity, FareShare with Tesco stores and online grocery distribution centres across the country collecting a grand total of 3.5 million meals for people in need. Tesco has subsequently topped up total donations by 30%, allowing the foodbank to help even more people in their time of need. Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers. Law Society President John Wotton said that the Law Society introduced CQS to promote high standards in the home buying process. “Buying a home is one of the largest purchases anyone will make in their lifetime, so it is essential that it is done to the highest standard by a solicitor. There are many different conveyancing service providers out there, making it difficult for home buyers to identify those which can ensure a safe and efficient level of service.”

Caroline Parsons, Partner at Whitehead Vizard says: “We are delighted to have yet again secured CQS status. It is recognition of the high standards we provide to our residential property clients and is a signal to future home buyers of the excellent service level we provide at what is often a stressful time for many people.” For more information on the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme visit www. lawsociety.org.uk/cqs.
