The incomparable duo, Matmos, have done it again! Their new album, Plastic Anniversary, was created using only plastic. Highlighting the crises of convenience, the Duo make music from our refuse. True to form, the band have assembled a promiscuous array of examples of this sturdy-yet-ersatz family of materials: Dominos, Styrofoam coolers, police riot shields, polyethylene waste containers, PVC panpipes, pinpricks of bubble wrap, pills, silicone gel breast implants and most horrifically synthetic human fat. Where did this idea come from? Drew Daniels and M.C, Schmidts own “plastic” anniversary as a couple.

Matmos glide from the tongue-in-cheek fun of “Breaking Bread” (literally smashing Bread LPs) to Cronenbergian body-horror of “Interior with Billiard Balls & Synthetic Fat.” The album is playful and poppy while conveying a very serious message and on the darker implications of ignoring the havoc we are imposing on the earth all for the sake of convienience.

A super special limited edition set will come with a sculptural album, embedded with plastic bottles, that while is the actual album, is rendered viruatlly unplayable by the pastic floating within. This edition also includes the album on a exclusive multi color mashup vinyl, a t-shirt, and a bonus track, all exclusive to the box. All proceeds from this special edition will benefit The Ocean Cleanup.

Soul Jazz Records are re-releasing keyboardist Eddie Russ’s seminal debut deep jazz LP Fresh Out in a new limited edition coloured vinyl 1000 copies worldwide (+ free download code) and new CD edition.

Eddie Russ was an important figure to emerge from the vibrant underground jazz scene that thrived in Detroit in the early 1970s, existing in the cultural and economic desolation of the city after the departure of Motown in the late 1960s. This scene included the musical collective Tribe (including members Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin, Harold McKinney and Doug Hammond) and Kenny Cox’s Strata Records. Eddie Russ’s Fresh Out was first released in 1974 on the independent Jazz Masters record label.

As well as including the classic jazz dance cut The Lope Song, Eddie Russ’s Fresh Out featured the debut of the group The Mixed Bag who subsequently recorded for both Tribe and Strata Records. Eddie Russ released two further classic jazz funk albums in the late 1970s, See the Light and Take a Look at Yourself.

Rian Treanor will release his anticipated debut album ‘ATAXIA’ on Planet Mu this March. The striking full-length follows singles for The Death Of Rave and Warp’s Arcola imprint as well as DJ support from the likes of Björk, Beatrice Dillon, Errorsmith and Mumdance.

The title ‘ATAXIA’ means 'the loss of full control of bodily movements' and relates to the album which is “intended to make people’s bodies move in unpredictable ways.” Rian adds “the angles in the letters, the phonetics seem to mirror the geometry and idiosyncratic patterns in the music.” He explains that components of the tracks were made by generating a series of irregular events and structuring them, or by destabilising a pattern that is constant.

When asked how the album compares with his previous releases, he says “My earlier EPs share a similar interest in angular and asymmetrical rhythms that are designed for club sound systems,” adding “they were more improvised, focusing on sequencing, using standard drum sounds and synthesiser patches. ATAXIA is more focused and stricter, it’s more co-ordinated in terms of the track selection and the rhythmic structures. I spent more time refining the synthesis and sound design, pushing it further than the previous releases.” He expresses an interest in exploring opposites in his music: “fluidity and syncopation,” “systematic and unpredictability,” “reduction and extremity,” “irregular symmetry,” “easy listening and brutal”. There’s clear a conceptual backdrop, but the music itself is not overthought. There’s an immediate joy to much of the album – check out ATAXIA_D3 with its wonderful cutups and modulations of the phrase “people don’t understand people.”

The roots of Rian's playful sound are directly linked to his love of the music he grew up with. Coming from Sheffield, you can hear elements of industrial, synth-pop, bleep, extreme computer music and speed garage at play. From Cabaret Voltaire to Warp and beyond; the sound of his city has been, and is, an integral part of his musical development and is still a direct influence.

Last year, he noted in an interview that "I'm not a computer programmer, I'm not an articulate person in that kind of way. I'm a visual artist." Now he elaborates “I meant more that I’m a visual thinker.” Drawing and visual art have been a fundamental part of his life “since I was a child. I got really into graffiti as a teenager and around the same time I got into mixing and these both developed together.” You can sense the mind of a visual artist at work in his music which is also reflected in the artwork he created for this project.

As well as his visual art, installations and multichannel sound works he is involved in numerous collaborations such as with composer Nakul Krishnamurthy exploring the common ground between Indian classical music and electronic music and his work with improv saxophonist Karl D'Silva, plus his time studying with Lupo at Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin (who taught him the “importance of reduction”) have all helped shape and push his sound into other unique and adventurous zones. Treanor is developing on different levels and in different forms all at the same time and ‘ATAXIA’ reflects that.

The band deal with nihilism, yet remain addictively fun. Their music is equal parts sludge and thrash, noise and riff-loaded rock. High Anxiety is an unabashed mocking of the madness of modern living, its chemical induced adventures and establishment absurdity, deriding the industrial complex behind established institutions such as NASA while savaging those who deny science. Oozing Wound on High Anxiety are nihilistic pied pipers making us laugh our way to the apocalypse. The album finds guitarist and vocalist Zack Weil drummer Kyle Reynolds and bassist Kevin Cribbin blending their ferocious energy, sonic experiments and blunt lyricism for a pummeling enjoyable head-banger with an irresistible sneer.

On High Anxiety, Oozing Wound’s songs have become more complex, their attacks more ferocious, and bass and guitar lines more captivating. The album was recorded in four days at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio. The trio ripped through live-tracking and overdubs, leaving space to experiment with new sounds and effects. The band, having an affinity for the complexities of prog music, managed to bring prog elements to High Anxiety without sacrificing any of their songs punch. Subtle layers of saxophone, flutes and synths were blended into guitar tones, adding depth and texture without cluttering arrangements. Fist-pumping blasts of whitehot riffing become a Trojan horse for sonic weirdness. The resulting recordings are at once some of their most sonically rich, immediate, and impactful.

High Anxiety drips with a caustic vitriol that is both riotous and intoxicating, a feat that could only be accomplished by Oozing Wound.

Octo Octa’s (Maya Bouldry-Morrison) latest EP “For Lovers”, represents some of the artist’s most vulnerable work to date.

The opening song “I Need You” is a declaration regarding her need for love during a delicate time of rapid change. The first vocal performance Maya has recorded in many years and the first since transition, features the voice of a woman who has been though an intense personal struggle, and through that come to a place of understanding that she is not alone. That the people in her life—her friends, her family, and her polyamorous lovers—are, and have been, essential to her process of self-acceptance and becoming.

The second song, “Bodies Melt Together” is a sensuous house dub that reflects Maya’s belief that physical connections with her partners is—at its most elevated—a profound spiritual catharsis. The gorgeous closing track, “Loops For Healing” was not originally intended for release, it was—-as the title suggests —-composed as a personal tool for healing.

James Place returns with Still Waves To A Whisper (fourth release on Umor Rex). Flitting between the dreamworld of hauntological synth music and hypnotic techno functionality, Still Waves To Whisper showcases James Place’s continuing development of dramatic (and varied) sound worlds.

Musically, Still Waves To A Whisper contains both some of the most immediately danceable and straight up beautiful tracks of James Place’s career. Utilising voice samples from the same source as his last album, Voices Bloom, opener ‘Known Cry’ is a heavenly coda of sunlight bursting through clouds, warm synths drifting across restrained pulses. ‘Timing and Lighting’ went through countless live iterations before the current version was tracked for this album, a tunneling exploration of rhythm with a dose of sardonic humor. ‘Move In Blue (Homeward Mix)’ is James Places’ rework of a track from 2017’s Voices Bloom, obsessively remixed and revisited, here littered with additional melodies and populated by newly sampled voices. Closing track ‘Names’ is perhaps the most outright beautiful James Place recording to date. A stripped back rework of a live version of Living On Superstition’s ‘Another Mourning In America’, the tune is based on a melodic line written after the studio recorded version. Interwoven with a sampled vocal, and rinsed of all of the original song, ‘Names’ is left behind a stark and compelling descendant. The digital release includes a remix of ‘Move In Blue’ by Persuasion aka Devon Hansen.

The title, Still Waves To A Whisper, stems from a conversation between Place and another artist on methods to ease anxieties and the benefits of a focused practice. The hope’s for this music to continue that conversation on a larger scale.

When I was very young I developed a fascination with the makeup of the classic symphony orchestra, in large part due to the fact that my grandfather was on the board of the Jackson, Mississippi symphony.

Most of my interests in life led to some sort of obsession with taxonomy, and the sheer variety of instruments was what probably grabbed me at first. I recall my grandad saying something about the harp, that was like an ‘open piano,’ piano being his primary instrument at the time. I never even began to grasp the complex universe of this otherworldly instrument even as my own fascination with stringed instruments developed over the years.

I’ll admit some bias here. Mary Lattimore and Mac McCaughan are both dear friends and collaborators. But they are also two people to whom I look for a sort of life inspiration because they share similar prismatic views of life’s possibilities - an unbridled enthusiasm and a desire to be constantly seeking. This endless and rambling energy certainly informs the music that they make separately, but coming together here as a duo makes so much sense, spiritually as much as musically. And as the results will testify to your ears, it’s a lovely concord of sounds they’ve made for you.

I don’t know how you feel, but if our current social and cultural landscape is one of exhausting noise, chaos, and unconscious verbalism, then the pieces on New Rain Duets express an impossibly gorgeous anecdote. Diaphanous melody emerges from the strings of Mary’s harp, at times reminiscent of a room full of antique music boxes playing different songs but in accord. The synthesizer textures from Mac float in and around the harp’s arpeggios, warm like cloud cover, then disturbed and more harshly electronic. Like the textures on Bowie’s Berlin albums with Eno, there is a ceaseless sense of beauty and foreboding coexistent.

The four movements in this collaboration snake and float through a liminal sonic universe, without a linear sense of tension/release but rather a calm and brooding build into a widening pool of immersive sound. The title ‘New Rain Duets’ gives me an evocative sense of just that, rain falling in some far off locale, a sort of psychedelic natural tone poem. One of the great strengths of this duo is that both artists are consistently searching with their own sounds. Mary manipulates her harp with loop and delay pedals while Mac mimics on his synthesizers, layering and processing as he goes. The final marriage of tones and players yields the perfect balance of acoustic and electronic. It’s a new vein of chamber music, both meditative and exploratory.

As a Southerner, I guess I want to make something of a case for the North Carolina roots of both Mary and Mac, that as if there’s some sort of rural Gothic energy flowing through these sounds like ghosts in the countryside. That would be disingenuous to both artists though. The truth is “cosmic music” doesn’t belong to anyone of a particular time or geography. It lives not just in the notes played but the ones in between, and when rendered in such a way as this record, it yields a thing of true beauty and wonder.

Fountain Fire is Bill MacKay’s second solo album on Drag City. The Chicago-based guitarist’s continued sonic journeys in conversation with himself follow a travel-worn map written in his own hand. Bill has followed the trail from familiar confines to unknown places, catalyzing a style equally enamored with the traditional and the avant-garde to make his most expansive and forceful music to date.

You can hear it in the opening track; as the lava and lakes of “Pre-California” simmer to boiling, Bill assembles a bridge of guitars, layering beams of rumbling acoustic, distorted electric, and arcing slide parts. By leaping boldly from fixed points, he makes synergetic discoveries in mid-air. Significant Changes is a blend of vintage drum machine funk drawing heavily on Chicago’s house blueprint - a natural progression from a string of EPs both solo and alongside her friend and mentor DJ Fett Burger.

Hailing from the small town of Grand Forks, British Columbia - some 6 hours outside Vancouver - Jayda Guy grew up surrounded by nature, which sparked an early interest in biology. In 2018 she completed her Masters in Resource and Environmental Management specializing in environmental toxicology, wherein she specifically studied the effects of human activity on the Salish Sea killer whales (orcas) of Vancouver, BC. It was also the year that she finished recording her debut album as Jayda G - Significant Changes.

The title of the album was the most used phrase in her final thesis and exemplifies how intertwined her work in science and music is. “I’m trying to bring my two worlds together… to bridge the communication gap, engage people in a new way”, she explains. “I don’t know if people in the electronic music world will want to talk about the environment but I think I should try! I think it’s our duty to use a platform like this in a positive way, that’s our social responsibility."

With instruments as ingredients and songs as recipes, the Sisters of the Strawberry Moon stirred up lovely new concoctions as well as fresh interpretations of family heirloom songs we hold dear. We believe music is a celebration of life and folk music an expression of community and family, and Solstice is an artifact of our new friendship and musical fellowship.

Elephant Gym is a bass-driven, math rock band from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The band formed in 2012 and is composed of KT on bass, Tell on guitar, and Chia-Chin on drums.

Elephant Gym delivers clear and memorable bass lines, emotional guitar riffs, and melodic drumming in their mostly instrumental song production.

Tell, and KT are siblings. In their childhood, their mother taught them classical music into their adolescence. Later, they developed an interest in rock music, especially post-rock and math rock. Tell met Tu in a high school music club and formed Elephant Gym along with KT after discovering they all shared the same taste in music.

The title stems from a misunderstood conversation when frontman Josiah Schlater asked for “Evan, on the rocks.” A few months later during a tubing trip down the James River, seemingly floating through paradise, rocks would scrape their backs at random.

Based on an individual exploration of the sound and on the expressive possibilities of their instruments, the duo’s music seeks to join and systematize their influences, albeit without any obvious correspondences or affinities – resulting in textures and abstract melodies propelled by a mechanical and existential percussion that morphs into a kinetic trance. Heterodox and digressive musicians, they move freely between the repetition of krautrock and techno, jazz, experimental music and other new musical categories, João Pais Filipe and Julius Gabriel create radio-graphic sounds that inhabits somewhere between the reception and the emission of a signal, like a cosmic telephone exchange.

"I Remember When" is the sixth album from Tokyo based nostalgic ambient soloist Ex Confusion. The album finds Atsuhito Omori bringing Ex Confusion back to n5MD after a release each with Plancha and Orchid Tapes. “I Remember When” finds Omori carefully carving music out of hazy memories. Emotive, abstracted, and overcast (as the cover art itself alludes to). Omori excels at his brand of heart to hands clouded ambient by utilizing faded repetition with ghostly percolating guitars printed to old formats. Omori has been doing this type of minimalist modern compositional ambient for nearly a decade but never has it sounded so focused in its conception. As a bonus to an album of such understated beauty Omori includes a recent collaboration with Thomas Meluch's Benoit Pioulard pseudonym which further adds to the faded photograph characteristics of "I Remember When."
