Catalogue 2019

Dear Friends, A warm welcome to our Lent and Easter Catalogue for 2019. I hope it offers you some fruitful ideas for reflection during the coming seasons. On Boxing Day 2018 Sister Wendy Beckett, a great friend of Redemptorist Publications, died at the age of 88. She became an unlikely television star in the 1990s, working for the BBC as a popular art critic, bridging the gap between great art and ready understanding. She was such a skilled communicator that the BBC staff who worked with her nicknamed her “one-take Wendy”. In her memory we include a selection of her books in this catalogue. The choice of reading for Lent far outstrips that of Easter, so we have produced a new work by Richard Greatrex, Stations of the Resurrection, which I am sure will be enjoyed both by individuals and by groups. Our annual Lent Extra magazine, now celebrating its 21st year, will prove a bright and interesting companion during your Lent pilgrimage. Renewed thanks for your continued support of Redemptorist Publications during these challenging times.

Journeying with Jonah Fr Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

Journeying with Jonah The Struggle to Find Yourself Fr Denis McBride C.Ss.R. In this book Fr Denis has chosen to explore the character of Jonah – a somewhat unlikely hero. The prophet Jonah is a sympathetic partner, albeit a curious one, to help us review our lives. Jonah is offered to us as an unusual teacher – awkward, reluctant, disobedient, opinionated, fearful, flighty – the prophet who remains stubborn to the end. But his story celebrates the beauty of the indiscriminate mercy of God, a message for our time.

In 2016, Fr Denis addressed the annual meeting of the Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI) held in Dublin. His two lectures, about an hour each, reflect on Journeying with Jonah - The Struggle to Find Yourself. Jonah appears as someone who has emerged from among us: someone who has to struggle to find his true identity, someone who has to discover his direction in life, someone who has to allow his own outlook on life to be shaped by God’s mercy. This is an ancient narrative that speaks gently to our own stories today. AUDIO BOOK Code: 1747 ISBN: 705632049044 Price: £7.96

Following the death of Jesus in Jerusalem, two disappointed disciples leave the city of lost hopes and head away. For many people, the story of Emmaus is the most moving of the resurrection narratives, and Denis McBride’s reflections uncover the depth and beauty of Luke’s unique scene. Sr Wendy Beckett Sr Wendy, a friend and writer for RP Sr Wendy became a household name, synonymous with art history, with an encyclopaedic love for, and knowledge of, her subject. She had a unique ability to describe a work of art in everyday language, touching the hearts of a vast audience through her writing, speaking and appearances on television, radio and in the press. In a very real way, Sr Wendy was the interpreter between God, the artist and her global audience. She could look at a work of art and recognise God’s inspiration of the artist who translated that divine dialogue and vision into a painting, sculpture or other art form. Here, at Redemptorist Publications, we hope and pray that Sr Wendy Beckett is now enjoying the indescribable beauty which any work of art could only prefigure.

The Art of Faith A Lenten Journey through Duccio’s Maestà Sr Wendy Beckett In this inspiring series of reflections on episodes from the life of Jesus, Sr Wendy Beckett guides us around a selection of panels from the Maestà altarpiece. Duccio completed his great masterpiece for the high altar of Siena Cathedral in 1311 but rather than seeing these paintings as something from a bygone age, Sr Wendy challenges us to examine how Duccio’s representations offer us new meaning in our lives today. Palm Crosses from the Indian Missions Palm Sunday is the last Sunday before Easter and signifies the start of Holy Week in the Church calendar. Churches all over the world hand out palm crosses as they remember the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. As the story of Jesus travelling on a donkey into Jerusalem is recalled, the use of the palm cross is a symbol of the palm branches laid across the road by the gathered crowd.

Living Faith Lent Daily Catholic Devotions

With Grace and Gladness Stories and Reflections for Each Day of Lent

Each Lent, we tend to start out enthusiastically vowing to improve ourselves and to enrich our spiritual life. But at some point, we tend to fall short of our lofty goals. Living Faith Lent provides daily reinforcement via Lenten-themed devotions written by the authors of the popular Living Faith Daily Catholic Devotions magazine. Daily scripture and reflections for the entire season will guide parishioners to a greater appreciation of the joy of new life in our risen Saviour.

Reminding us that we have a God-given purpose, that life is to be enjoyed and that God loves us, Fr Connery helps readers to enjoy Lent with “Grace and Gladness!”If you take the time each day for his stories, reflections and prayers, which are based on scripture, Fr Connery will have you laughing and praying your way through Lent.

Taking up our crosses is not about sacrificing ourselves for sins. Instead, taking up a cross is about self-denial and sacrifice; it is about presenting our bodies as “a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1). Let these daily prayers for Lent help you do just that.
