STAFF Emmett Christie

Previously the domain of only heavy metal players like Fieldy of Korn and Les Claypool of Primus fame - the 5 string bass, with it’s extra low ‘B’ string is a must have even for modern pop players - the extended range adding significantly more power and emotion when used tactically. The use of 5 string bass goes back as far as 1965,when Fender released the Bass V - with the extra string at first actually being a higher C above the G. Consequently the instrument had a shorter scale with less frets. Although famously used by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, the Bass V didn’t really take off until it was decided to drop beneath the Low E, where you could really shake the house down.
