STAFF Emmett Christie

A bass amp has to work hard, it is amplifying some serious low end, and it has to compete with guitarists and drummers who insist on making so much noise. The bass is what locks the band together, it’s the most important instrument (that’s just a fact) and it’s what makes people dance, but you need to make sure you can be heard. I remember struggling with a huge amp, that was comically oversized compared to anyone else in the band for a few years, but it meant it lasted me a long time and I never had a gig that it couldn’t manage. Luckily technology has moved on in the past two decades, so now you can get amps that are loud enough for any gig, but light enough and compact enough for your bedroom. You should be able to match the volume of a drummer if you plan on gigging, a balanced DI output will be really useful for recording, an effects loop could be really important if you like to experiment with sounds and maybe your family would appreciate a headphone socket for those late night practice sessions.
