NYJO is a glittering showcase for the UK’s finest young professional jazz musicians, combining a hard-swinging rhythm section and hugely talented soloists. Performing around 40 concerts a year both nationally and internationally. NYJO has helped launch the careers of many of the country’s most renowned jazz musicians including Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Mark Nightingale and Laura Jurd. Under the baton of Music Director Mark Armstrong, the 23-piece orchestra tonight presents its new programme: ‘Female Jazz Icons’, part of its EQ project; remixing the gender balance in jazz.

Female jazz musicians have long been an important part of the jazz scene, celebrated as singers but often under-represented in other roles. Our concert will celebrate women’s contributions to jazz through history, from Ella Fitzgerald, trumpeter Valaida Snow and composer and pianist Mary-Lou Williams; to contemporary artists like Maria Schneider, Esperanza Spalding and Mercury nominee Laura Jurd.

The story of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan is no ordinary boy-meets-girl love story. Set against the backdrop of a seemingly idyllic New England coastal town, their illfated romance is beset by unemployment, poverty and violence. When Billy dies after a bungled attempted robbery, he leaves Julie expecting their child. However, in the afterlife, Billy is given one last opportunity to do the right thing and the story ends with the uplifting affirmation that, however dark the past and uncertain the present, there is always hope for a brighter future. With memorable music such as “If I Loved You”, “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Carousel is an all-time favourite. This contemporary production by Astwood Bank Operatic Society sets the action in the 1950s. The ‘60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60’s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues covers from their new album ‘Makin’ Tracks’ Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Mike Hugg on keyboards, Tom McGuinness on guitar, Rob Townsend on drums, Marcus Cliffe on bass, and Simon Currie on saxophone/ flute.

Carpenters Gold supremely captures how the duo was ‘live in concert’ and is the most accurate Carpenters tribute production on the stage today. The iconic voice of Karen Carpenter is a magically soothing one, and few vocalists can attempt to emulate her accurately, but International West End vocalist Vikki Holland-Bowyer possesses the warm dulcet tones which sound uncannily similar to the 70s superstar.
