Bringing brewing to life! Once upon a time, on September 29th 1838, there was an ordinary man called William Robinson, a cotton weaver of modest means, who bought a small pub called the Unicorn Inn on Lower Hillgate. Little did William know when he bought the sawdust-and-spittoon alehouse all those years ago that it would mushroom into a multi-million-pound company owning over 270 pubs across Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and Wales. The Robinsons family have been brewing beer at the Unicorn brewery in the heart of Stockport ever since. Back in 2013, in celebration of the brewery’s legendary 175th birthday, Robinsons Visitors Centre launched its multi-million pound Visitor’s Centre and proudly opened their doors to the public. Over the last 5 years, the Apsley Street attraction has welcomed over 100,000 visitors from across the world, conducted over 2800 tours around Robinsons’ state-of-the-art brew house, and hosted over 100 bespoke events at its unique venue. Visitors can marvel at the magic of the brewing process, admire new and original brewing equipment as they tour around the brew house, play with interactive screens, visit the Shire horses (almost as famous as the brewery itself), buy beer related gifts and also explore some real vintage gems showcasing just how things have changed since 1838.  Guests are invited to round off their visit with a delicious homemade lunch or afternoon tea - freshly prepared, using local ingredients - and, of course, sample some of Robinsons’ finest cask ales (or soft drinks for those who are driving!). The story of Robinsons, now one of Britain’s biggest independent family breweries, is not just about the history of a brewery but of a family which has played - and continues to play - an immensely important role in British Brewing.

The sound of water over pebbles Clonter Opera was founded in 1974 when Jeffery Lockett, the Artistic Director, invited the Abbey Opera Group to bring an evening of operatic excerpts to his farm in Cheshire.

The straw tiered seating was removed and a building programme begun to provide the fixed seating which can bee seen today. Through the creation of CFMT, a residential emerging artist programme was developed and continues to grow.

A barn full of straw bales was converted for a night into an auditorium, and the proceeds went to Cancer Relief. This was continued in the years which followed. In 1981 the local authority asked that these annual operatic picnics be brought within the rules of the 1968 Theatres Act, providing the impetus for Clonter Opera to become a permanent fixture.

Rebranded now to simply Clonter - an Anglo Saxon word to describe the sound that water makes when it travels over pebbles - also has a comprehensive education programme, and offers a wide range of other musical entertainment throughout the year.

Why Visit Us: The award-winning Museum of Cannock Chase is a great day out for the whole family. Located on the site of the former Valley Colliery, which became a mining training centre, the museum is the gateway to the Hednesford Hills Nature Reserve and the ideal starting point for a visit to Cannock Chase.

“Bringing the past alive

Whether you are interested in coal mining, want a hands-on experience of the history of toys, fancy reminiscing about Gran’s front room or want to find out about the history of Cannock, we have something for everyone in our permanent galleries. There’s also lots for families including quizzes and interactive exhibits, plus a packed events and temporary exhibition programme throughout the year. Complete your visit with cake and a cuppa in our coffee shop, or bring a picnic, and browse our gift shop. You can also find out what else there is to do on Cannock Chase from our Tourist Information Point.
