British Wildlife Award photography at Matlock Bath The Peak District Mining Museum has been opening its doors to the public since 1978 and together with Temple Mine provides an enjoyable all year round visitor experience to people of all ages. There are tunnels to climb through for the young at heart and many interactive exhibitions throughout. Lead has been mined in the Peak District since before Roman Times and has been the basis of Derbyshire’s history and landscape. The Museum provides an insight into this ancient industry which is relevant to modern life. There is a Visitor Information Point housed in the Museum with a wealth of leaflets to take away and the use of a touch screen information kiosk. Due to the success of the Veolia sponsored ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ Exhibition in 2012, the Museum is delighted to announce it will be hosting the highlights exhibition of the British Wildlife Photography Awards, organised by local social business Crane Gregory Projects. These brilliant wildlife photos, all taken in Britain, are a must for tourists in the area this summer! The awards take place from 6 July to 1st September 2013. Matlock Bath Parish Council are holding a Pro Loco Art Competition in May and later in the year they will be holding a similar photographic competition featuring Matlock Bath. The award-winning Chestnut Centre in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, is a firm family favourite. Since the centre was set up by keen conservationists Carol and Roger Heap over 30 years ago, it has grown into a popular wildlife attraction. Zip Zip Away! Whoosh and you’re gone. Europe’s biggest zip line Zip World opened to the public for the first time in March this year. Not for the faint hearted Zip World is situated in Snowdonia at Penrhyn Quarry and provides riders with an experience of a life time. All visitors embarking on this thrilling adventure will start off on the little zipper to give you a taste of what’s to come. You will then be transported to the top of the big zipper by military trucks and given a commentary tour about the quarry’s natural history and surrounding geography. You will soar at 1.6 kilometers through the air at 120 kilometers per hour taking in a birds eye view of 200 years of history above a mountain lake, and a working quarry. You will witness views of the spectacular North Wales Coast, Anglesey and even the Isle of Man if you are lucky. This spectacular journey will take 2 to 3 hours and everyone taking part will be lent flying suits, helmets and goggles. The area is ideal for zip flying as it was once the largest slate quarry in the world where zip lines were built 100 years ago just to extract rocks. Fluttering wings at Brocks Hill Following 2 years hosting a very successful Bird Day, the Friends of Brocks Hill Country Park are expanding this year to a Birds, Bees and Butterfies Day. There are lots of different activities for all ages from children’s crafts and face-painting to Guided Bird and Butterfly Walks around the park. There will be exhibits and information of birds, bees and butterflies and hopefully some honey on sale! And don’t miss the chance to meet real live birds of prey! New 4D film experience at Legoland LEGO® Legends of Chima™ 4D Movie Xperience, is the newest 4D film to screen at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre at the Trafford Centre, Manchester. The all new 12 minute animated 4D film, complete with high impact special effects, will immerse audiences in the fantastical LEGO world of Chima where tribes of animal warriors compete in epic battles for CHI, a mystical energy source of limitless power and destruction.
