Spectacular underground Tours at Sygun Copper Mine

Cheshire family brewers Robinsons are celebrating 175 years of brewing by opening a new Visitors Centre. You can marvel at the magic of their brewing process, admire new and original brewing equipment as you tour around the brew house, play with interactive screens, create your own perfect pub guide, visit the Shire horses, buy beer related gifts and also explore some real vintage gems showcasing just how things have changed since 1838. You can even round off your visit with a delicious homemade lunch or afternoon tea - freshly prepared, using local ingredients and of course sample some of Robinsons’ finest cask ales (or soft drinks for those who are driving!). The Robinsons family have been brewing beer at the Unicorn brewery in Stockport since 1838, but in the last 12 months alone they have rebuilt their time-honored Victorian brew house, installed the world’s largest Hopnik (a giant tea strainer which extracts many of the great flavours from ‘leaf’ hops which conventionally get boiled away rather than finishing up in the beer), rebranded their family of ales with a fresh new look (and feel), and now, as they celebrate 175 years of brewing excellence - they are befittingly and proudly launching a new Visitors Centre. Essentially a history of a sturdily independent business, the Robinsons story is simultaneously a microcosm of the British brewing industry, a chart of social change, a genealogical showcase, and a family story through and through. Oliver Robinson, Managing Director (Beer Division) of Robinsons, commented: “Our Visitors Centre is not just about the history of a brewery but of a family which has played - and continues to play - an immensely important role in British Brewing. The Robinsons story will fascinate not only those interested in beer and brewing, but anyone with a taste for the ups and downs of business life over the last 175 years and more.”

The heart of adventure

Zip Zip Away! Whoosh and you’re gone. Europe’s biggest zip line Zip World opened to the public for the first time in March this year. Not for the faint hearted Zip World is situated in Snowdonia at Penrhyn Quarry and provides riders with an experience of a life time. All visitors embarking on this thrilling adventure will start off on the little zipper to give you a taste of what’s to come. You will then be transported to the top of the big zipper by military trucks and given a commentary tour about the quarry’s natural history and surrounding geography. You will soar at 1.6 kilometers through the air at 120 kilometers per hour taking in a birds eye view of 200 years of history above a mountain lake, and a working quarry. You will witness views of the spectacular North Wales Coast, Anglesey and even the Isle of Man if you are lucky. This spectacular journey will take 2 to 3 hours and everyone taking part will be lent flying suits, helmets and goggles. The area is ideal for zip flying as it was once the largest slate quarry in the world where zip lines were built 100 years ago just to extract rocks. Discover Delia in a previous life Recipes written by the 18th century’s domestic goddess are to be recreated at the country home where she learnt her trade. Visitors to Arley Hall and Gardens in Cheshire will be able to sample the culinary delights of Elizabeth Raffald - the Delia Smith of her time - in Arley’s Tudor Barn Restaurant this summer. Steve Hamilton, General Manager at Arley, said the estate near Knutsford was determined to pay tribute to the author of The Experienced English Housekeeper, which was one of the first cookbooks and a big hit when it was published in the 1700s. “Elizabeth Raffald is a huge character in Arley’s history and it is only right that we mark her contribution to the estate’s past, he said. “There are a few recipes that we will steer clear of - such as those for turtle and calf’s foot pudding - but there are definitely some traditional meals that visitors are going to love. Raffald was the housekeeper at Arley Hall for several years in the 1760s where she served Lady Elizabeth Warburton, to whom The Experienced English Housekeeper is dedicated. It contains 800 original recipes and is split into three parts - the first being dedicated to browning, soups, fish, plain meat, game, pies and puddings. The second covers confectionary and includes ‘directions to set out a table in the most elegant manner and in the modern taste.’ She goes on to explain the finer details of pickling, potting and distilling in the final section. Raffald makes it clear to readers that her recipes are written ‘purely from practice’ and in plain English ‘so as to be understood by the weakest capacity’. In a note to Lady Elizabeth Warburton she said: “I am not vain enough to propose adding anything to the experienced housekeeper, but hope these recipes may be of use to young persons who are willing to improve themselves.

        History Hunter

The Tudor Barn Restaurant will now be dedicated to her memory with recipes on the menu and history boards detailing her links to the estate. Raffald’s old food lists and receipts are also available on a new website www.arleyhallarchives.co.uk

After marrying Arley’s head gardener, Raffald moved to Manchester where, over the next 18 years, she reportedly ran two pubs, two coffee shops, an indoor and outdoor catering business and an agency supplying domestic staff. Among the recipes Arley Hall is hoping to put on the menu is one for her pies that helped make her popular in the city.

Only when booking in person at the Town Hall Visitor Information Centre

Arley Hall has been in the family of the current Lord Ashbrook for 500 years and is world-renowned for its herbaceous borders - thought to be the first of its kind in England - and the Ilex Avenue of 14 cylindrical evergreen holm oaks. The hall and gardens are popular with film crews. Everything from a Coronation Street funeral to a Hollyoaks party to Who Let The Dogs Out for the children’s BBC have been filmed here. The present Hall stands on the same site as the first house built by the family in 1469. Lord Ashbrook, the great great grandson of Rowland Egerton-Warburton who built the present Arley Hall, grew up in the Hall as a child and spent some time as a young man living there. Couples can get married inside and outside at Arley. The herbaceous borders provide the perfect, most colourful aisle for any bride to walk down. Discover the largest Prehistoric mine in the world

Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age they change our views about the ancient people of Britain and their civilized and structured society 2,000 years before the Roman invasion.

Over the past 26 years mining engineers, cavers and archaeologists have been slowly uncovering more tunnels and large areas of the original mining landscape to reveal what is now thought to be the largest Prehistoric mine, so far discovered in the World. A visit to Great Orme Mines is both an enjoyable and educational experience which can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. Walking through tunnels mined out over 3,500 years ago gives visitors an appreciation of the conditions our prehistoric ancestors faced in their search for copper.

The company is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest railway company in the world, being founded in 1832. The world's oldest steam engines, Prince and Palmerston, are still in regular use and celebrate their 150th birthdays this year. The trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, clinging to the side of the mountains. The Welsh Highland is Snowdonia’s newest railway. Trains start their spectacular 25 mile scenic journey from beneath the historic castle walls at Caernarfon. The comfortable trains offer freshlycooked hot food and refreshments and climb from sea level to the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach the picturesque village of Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass - voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust - and on to Porthmadog.
