Recreate® Courses

Enrol in a Recreate® Course! AQUATIC COURSES

Paddling UWA GOLD over 50’s Check out the view from the UWA Watersports Complex on Matilda Bay, this is where the Gold paddling group is based. Meet at 11:30am for a land based flexibility/fitness session with a physiotherapist and follow that with lunch on the balcony – dolphin viewing an option! Next is organising the boats and hit the water. On return to the Watersports Complex it’s time for afternoon tea and plans for the next week on the water.

Paddling Level 1 This course will cover all the basics and safety on the water and in a fun, safe environment. You will learn stroke techniques and how to manoeuvre the kayak efficiently to gain the confidence to paddle independently. All paddling equipment is included. Please bring a change of clothes and towel, as you may get wet. Shower facilities are available. This course is a pre-requisite for all other Recreate® paddling courses. Participants need to be able to swim to enrol in this course.

Paddling River Trip: Swan/Canning River Explore parts of the upper Swan/Canning River with a half day paddle through new surroundings. Experience the tranquillity and beauty of the bush lined river. Participants must be reasonable paddlers able to competently paddle a kayak. This can be evidenced by completion of the Paddling – Learn How / Level 1 course or similar. Participants must be able to swim. Bring footwear, warm paddling clothing and water. All paddling equipment will be provided. We bus to the launch site, have our paddle and return to the UWA Watersports Complex early afternoon.

Paddling Level 2 Continue the joys of paddling. Longer paddles, canoe polo, as well as further developing your skills. All paddling equipment is included in this course. Participants must have completed the Paddle – Learn How / Level 1 course or equivalent before commencing Level 2.

Paddling over 35’s No matter what age you are, exercise is an important part of your lifestyle, and while you may think you’re not as fit or in good shape as you were 10 years ago, there are many different water activities you can get involved in to make you feel great, and keep fit at the same time. Come along and learn a large variety of paddling techniques and enjoy the strong social atmosphere. Participants must have completed the Paddle – Learn How / Level 1 course or equivalent before commencing this course. All paddling equipment is included.

If you want to drive any motor powered recreational vessel in W.A. you now need to get your Recreational Skippers Ticket. This complete course covers the core competencies listed by the National Maritime Safety Committee for recreational boat drivers nationally. HBF Freeway Bike Hike 21 March 2010 Fast approaching is the Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma on 21 of March. Birthed as a unique fundraising event for the Asthma Foundation of Western Australia, the Bike Hike has evolved into WA’s largest mass participation cycling event. Now entering its sixth year The HBF Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma is Western Australia’s largest single day cycling event and the third largest cycling event in Australia. With Team UWA having more than 60 participants in 2009, 2010 is expected to be even bigger with a hoped for 100 participants taking part from the UWA community. The Bike Hike caters for beginners through to elite cyclists and includes three options to choose from; the 60km from Kwinana train station, the 30km from Belmont Park Racecourse, or 10km Family Ride from Greenwood train station with all three rides finishing in the City of Joondalup. So whatever your skill level there is a ride to suit your ability and other riders to share the experience with. To register visit www.registernow.com.au, select team entry, enter ‘UWA’ as the team name and simply follow the prompts!

Asics Bridges Fun Run 28 March 2010 The Asics Bridges Fun Run is a community charity race comprising of a 5km event starting in South Perth with the traditional 10km starting and finishing on Langley Park. It is organised by the West Australian Marathon Club and over the years has become a highlight on the UWA sporting calendar. Participants run, jog or walk their chosen distance and enjoy some refreshments as well as good company at the finish line. Last year Team UWA took to the field with many great runners including Courtney Carter placing an impressive first and Roberto Busi placing second in the 10km run, Dan Mcqueen placing second in the 5km run and runners

Ben Green and Clarence Lun both also finishing highly. With around 100 UWA participants expected to take to the field we expect another stellar turnout and performance. If you are thinking about participating in the City to Surf further on in the year, the Fun Run will provide you with a rewarding training incentive and a great way to be part of the vibrant UWA sporting culture. Email cmagar@sport.uwa.edu.au for further details. Hope you choose to join us on this most splendid day, see you there!

Hockey has long been a passionate sport within the Australian Sporting landscape. The 2009 Indian Rim Asian University Games (IRAUG) saw the University of Western Australia men’s side face off against the men of University Malaya in a three games series.
