Bruce Meakins Executive Director UWA Sports

Welcome to the 2012 Semester 2 Recreate®. Let’s wave winter goodbye, come out of hibernation and get into life on campus. UWA Sports has taken advantage of the quiet break time to prepare for new and returning students: The ongoing redevelopment of the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre, for students, staff and alumni, has been continuously successful, resulting in new equipment, specialised workout zones such as the Rowing Zone. Memberships are tailored towards students with various discounts and specials on offer.

Courses, classes or activities not only meet a range of sporting, fitness and recreation expectations, they are also a great means to connect, socialise and build communities. So make your time at UWA a memorable experience to be treasured for years to come by getting involved in uni sport. Stay active and healthy this semester. Bruce Meakins

A variety of sporting competitions run all semester long and give students the opportunity to represent their faculty, college or UWA, culminating in the annual Australian University Games which will be held in Adelaide this September. See page 34 for more information.

[SSAF] allowed us to extend our trading hours; giving students even more access to our state-of-the-art training equipment, more fitness classes, and highly qualified fitness instructors.

GETTING FIT BY

ASSOCIATION The changes to amenities fees at UWA earlier this year has opened the doors to fitness and healthy living for many students, are you taking advantage? 2012 saw the end of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) and a return to compulsory Students Services & Amenities Fees (SSAF). Part of this contribution from all students is used to develop recreation, sporting and educational facilities for the direct benefit of all students at UWA.

Off the gym floor, the new SSAF also means that every UWA student can become an Association Member of UWA Sports for free. Students can do this during their enrolment into UWA, or by coming into the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre and filling in a brief registration form.

Here at UWA Sports, SSAF has allowed us to complete the redevelopment of the Recreation & Fitness Centre, providing UWA students more value for their money with one of the largest and most modern fitness centres in the state.

By joining the association, UWA students gain a range of sporting and recreational benefits, including:

It’s also allowed us to extend our trading hours, giving students even more access to our state-of-the-art training equipment, run more fitness classes, and hire more highly qualified fitness instructors.

25% off Fitness Memberships.

25% off Sport & Recreation, Personal Development, and Health & Fitness courses, as well as Outdoor & Leadership courses and expeditions in the Recreate® program.

25% off tennis, table tennis, netball, squash, basketball, badminton and volleyball court hire.

25% off casual entry to the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre.

For UWA students, there’s never been a better time to be a part of UWA Sports. Browse through this magazine to see what else we have in store for our Association & Fitness Members, or head online to www.sport.uwa.edu.au. Association Memberships are also available to UWA staff and alumni for $150 per year. No matter what you’re into, you’ll fit in at UWA Sports.

BUILDINGUP

R E S I S TA N C E If you’re a serious athlete you probably devote a lot of time to training to improve your performance in your sport of choice. Skill training is probably the most important and most specific to your sport and should be a large focus for long term improvement. Then there’s conditioning work which anyone on a serious sports team will no doubt get plenty of, but conditioning can be gained and lost relatively quickly so isn’t as necessary to focus on for long term athletic development.

There is one form of training, however, that most aspiring athletes miss. It takes a long time to develop but is easily maintained over long periods, and its benefits are generally highly transferable to any sport. It is Resistance training. Resistance training is likely the most common method of training used in any gym. There are many different varieties of resistance training but all of them will result in some level of strength improvement in an untrained athlete. Of all the qualities that contribute to an athlete’s performance, strength is one of the slowest to improve as well as to deteriorate, but it’s also the most trainable. It is also the quality that in itself has the most positive effect on other aspects of fitness. For example, improved strength can lead to gains in peak and

by Nathaniel Baldwin, BSc Specialist in Exercise & Health Science

mean power output in anaerobic (ie sprint) measures, and it can increase time to fatigue in muscular endurance tests which can even make it beneficial for aerobic/cardiovascular endurance events.

This basically means an athlete who devotes time over the long term to improving their strength will, in the long term, improve as an athlete more than one who doesn’t. So if you’re any kind of athlete from long distance runner to team sport athlete to sprinter, and have never done any serious resistance training, you’re leaving a large resource for potential improvement untapped, especially for those closer to the sprint/ power side of the spectrum. Of course the training that is most important will always be the most specific to your sport (meaning run if you’re a runner) but resistance training should always be an integral part of the development of any athlete. So if you are interested in improving your athletic ability through a resistance training program, or simply want to improve your strength and general health, then come and speak to one of our friendly trainers who will be more than happy to design a program specifically designed to help you to reach your goals, whatever they may be.

UWA SPORTS ROWING ZONE Looking to pull ahead of the pack this semester? The new UWA Sports Rowing Zone is the place to be!

UWA Sports launched the Row Zone with a 500m Indoor Rowing Competition earlier this year; inviting students to compete in a heats of 5 to set the best 500m time.

The UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre has finally unvieled its latest development: a high-tech Rowing Zone fitted out with 10 indoor rowing machines and 5 wide-screen monitors. These monitors give the Zone an accessible digital interface, allowing rowers to get more involved with their rowing experience.

Tara Broadhurst took home first place in the womens category, while Grant Adendorff won the mens. The bonus Spot Prize of a brand new mountain bike was awarded to Sarah Hammob.

Along with the ability to create an individual profile, log and save workouts, and compare times and distances, the new interface is the ideal means to host virtual rowing competitions with other gyms and universities around the world.

Australia to offer this level of training and competition. The Rowing Zone can interface with any of these other systems, or any from around the world, to create virtual rowing competitions with other universities and gyms in real time.

The Rowing Zone is ideal for virtual competitions, elite training, and even for the regular gym user. The system gives all of UWA Sports members a more involved experience and better accesibility with structuring their workouts.

UWA Sports is very excited to be able to hold these sorts of events, and has made the Rowing Zone a focus for semester 2. An inter- college competition and inter- university competition where students and fitness centre members can take on other Australian universities in teams of 8 have already been planned out. Check the Recreate速 courses info on page 20 for more details.

UWA Sports is the only gym in the state to use this high tech system, making it one of an elite few in

UWA NETBALL CLUB CHALLENGE WORLDS TALLEST PLAYER On the long weekend of 2 to 4 June 2012 twelve players from UWA Netball Club were chosen to represent Perth Netball Association (PNA) in the Smarter than Smoking Association Championships. Netball WA holds the Smarter than Smoking Association Championships every year. The weekend-long event involves athletes from all over WA competing in their respective divisions to display their impressive netball skills in a fun and smoke-free environment. The team competed in Open Division 1 against teams from Fremantle, Kalamunda, Southern Districts, Wanneroo and Sri Lanka. The players were very proud to represent PNA and did so with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The experience and camaraderie the girls gained over the three days was invaluable. The highlight of the tournament was the game against the Sri Lanka national team. The UWA players had the experience of playing against an international side – one that boasts the world’s tallest netballer, Tharjini Sivalingam (2.06m). This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that has improved their netball skills immensely.

NATIONAL TITLE FOR UWA TORPEDOES At the recent National U18 Water Polo championships at the AIS in Canberra the University of Western Australia Torpedoes boys beat tournament favourites Cronulla Sharks in a low scoring 3-1 thriller to win the title. The Torpedoes are coached by Olympic Games Bronze medallist, Andrei Kovalenko, who has created a quality water polo centre at UWA. UWA Torpedoes’ two first quarter goals came from Nick Hughes and Andrew Ford. Hughes has National League experience and trains with the senior squad. Cronulla’s only goal came in the second quarter and the sealer for UWA came from Tom Cunningham midway through the last quarter. Josh Zekulich, who also played his first National League game in 2012, was outstanding in goals for UWA throughout the final and tournament.

“We may not have had the best team on paper, but we played smart polo as a team, so I can’t highlight any individual player.” The win is a major boost for water polo in Western Australia eight months out from the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth in December, a tournament in which Torpedoes’ stars Hughes and Smith hope to play. The win by the boys is thought to be the first win by a UWA club team in a National Club Championship. The UWA Torpedoes’ girls side finished in tenth in the girl’s competition with UWA star Jessica Zimmerman named in the National squad.

As a result of great form throughout the tournament Hughes and Centre Forward Fraser Smith have been named in the National Born ’94 training Squad. Zekulich is already in a younger squad and Smith has subsequently been added to the National Born ’93 Men’s squad to tour Europe in July this year. There he will join Torpedoes team mate George Ford who played in the Australian team that placed fourth in the 2011 Junior World Championships. Coach Kovalenko expressed great pride in his team and was impressed with their teamwork over the entire tournament. “They really did a great job and worked very well as a team,” Kovalenko said after the game.

UWA BADMINTON CLUB The UWA Badminton Club is a social club that aims to promote the sport through the university and wider community. The club caters for all levels of abilities and offer our participants the opportunity to stay fit, socialise and to play the sport in a relaxed atmosphere. Playing every Wednesday night from 7.30pm to 10.30pm at the UWA Recreation Centre, the club is open to everybody. The club also arranges social functions including an annual round robin tournament for those that would like to play competitively. For more information please contact Raymond on rlraymondlam@gmail.com.

UWA HANDBALL CLUB

UWA FENCING CLUB

Handball is a fast sport played predominantly in European countries. It has been described as similar to water polo, but played on land. It combines elements of many sports, with a soccer-sized goal, hockey-style D, basketball-type dribbling, as well as many other unique features. At UWA this contact sport is played in a mixed environment, which is how it is played at AUG and TSWA events, but for National Competition males and females play separately.

The UWA Fencing Club trains in the Olympic sport of Fencing. The club ran on and off since 1947, then reformed in 1992 and has continued ever since. The club trains every day except Tuesday and Sunday at the UWA International Martial Arts Centre in Claremont. New members and beginners are always welcome.

The short but illustrious history of the club has seen it never place lower than a silver medal in any competition. In 2009 at AUG the team won silver in the 2nd Division, 2010 saw it nearly beat the entirely foreign Curtin team for the 1st place and a close match in 2011 against Sydney Uni left it again with silver. The popularity of Indoor and Beach Handball is growing quickly all over Australia, and there has never been a better time to get into a sport where beginners are warmly welcomed into the tight knit community and have a real chance to represent their state and their country! UWA training is held on Wednesdays during semester at the UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre from 6pm until 7.30pm. Games take place every fortnight, also at the Rec Centre. Head to www.facebook.com/uwahandball for more details.

2012 has proven to be a successful year for the club with some of its elite fencers selected for Australian teams and the Shadow Olympic team. The youth program has continued to flourish with several young fencers selected in the State team to compete in the Under 15 and Under 17 National Championships in Sydney this July. For more information about the club visit www.uwafencing.org or email us at secretary@uwafencing.org.

SILVER FOR UWA STUDENT AT WORLD ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. UWA student and ultimate club member Kendall Thorne was part of the Australian national mixed team that competed at the World Ultimate Championship in Osaka, Japan, on Saturday 14 July, winning a silver medal. The team, selected from the best ultimate players across the nation, came in second in the championships, losing to Canada 17-13 in the final. UWA Sports congratulates Kendall and the rest of the Australian Team on their silver medal and international acheivements. “The installation of a second synthetic turf pitch will have immediate and longer term benefits for the local community as well as our top-level players,” -Prof Paul Johsnon, VC UWA TO BUILD NEW SYNTHETIC HOCKEY PITCH The University of Western Australia will join forces with the State and Federal Governments to build a second synthetic turf hockey pitch at UWA Sports Park in Mount Claremont. UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said the University was pleased to be partnering with the Federal and State Governments to provide essential support for the ongoing development of hockey in Western Australia. The Federal and State Governments will each contribute $500,000 to the project. UWA will also contribute $500,000, which includes the use of the land at UWA Sports Park, while the State will

provide an additional $45,000 for lighting. “The installation of a second synthetic turf pitch will have immediate and longer term benefits for the local community as well as our top-level players,” Professor Johnson said. “It will provide an additional training venue for elite teams while also enabling us to host national and international tournaments and increase the capacity of UWA Sports Park as a hockey venue. “This will ensure the sport can continue to grow and further encourage young sports people to reach their potential.”

“ Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

Professor Johnson said Western Australia had a long, strong and proud tradition of producing national and international hockey champions. UWA is particularly proud that Australia’s national team, the Kookaburras, will feature the talents of UWA graduate Ric Charlesworth as coach and UWA engineering/ commerce student Fergus Kavanagh as a player at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The new pitch will be built next to the existing UWA hockey clubrooms and is expected to be completed for the 2013 hockey season.

Planning takes the thinking aspect out and maximizes results. Get smart about your workout, make your goals even smarter:

Don’t let these reasons pile up; plan your workouts before you come in to the gym. This applies to everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes.

Set yourself tasks that will challenge your abilities, whether it be setting a new personal best on the bench or simply trying something new.

Planning allows you to form goals to strive for; it helps to keep the mind focused whilst in the gym.

So when you’re training, your mind is ready, all you have to do is put your body to work.

Remember, motivation is only half the battle. Smart planning and smarter goals will get you to the top.

Trainer of the Month

Chris Goodall-Smith Strength, Conditioning, & Fat Loss Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness, First Aid, Working With Children Certificate, currently in second year Exercise and Health Science UWA AREA OF EXPERTISE Strength and Conditioning Training, Fat Loss. TRAINING GUIDELINES The key to success in any training regime is to have direction, knowledge, goals, motivation, and most importantly a healthy nutritious diet. I believe when starting a new program it is important to sit down and write down what you hope to achieve, why you want to achieve it, and who you have to help you get there. I believe a balanced program of weights training and cardiovascular conditioning is ideal to improve your overall fitness and wellbeing. With the right knowledge, motivation, diet and direction there is no reason why we cannot achieve greatness. CLIENT SUCCESS Cathy, 24, came to me in 2010. She was very shy and extremely self conscious about her body.

Seeing the impact her sedentary lifestyle had made on her body and her life, she made the decision that it was time for a change. We sat down together and discussed her goals, what had been holding her back, how she felt about herself as well as a range of other questions. Cathy had little self worth, weighing in at 70kg, she hoped to get down to 55kg. So we gave 6 months in order to reach that goal, training 3 times a week with myself, got her on a strict diet, and used various training goals to keep her motivated outside of the gym.

Fitness Challenge Take on Chris’s challenge and see how you measure up. Cross Fit Challenge: 100 skips 10 burpee’s 50 squats 50 crunches 10 pushups 50 box jumps That’s one set. Do 4 more, and complete the entire circuit in under 30 minutes for a real kick.

Throughout the months, I watched Cathy change, she became much happier with herself and her body. More so, she noticed her life just come together, which I think was the greatest part. After the 6 months she has lost 20kg. After this point she had enough knowledge and motivation to keep her training up without me, which I encourage to all my clients. I believe although your original goal is to lose weight, the main thing people drive for is just to feel good about themselves. Whenever I can help someone achieve that, I am extremely content.

What does representing UWA mean to you? Putting on the green and gold polo to board a plane to represent your university is a moment to take hold of. It’s not just the name you represent, but also the history, the past athletes, and the future generation of students who will stand in your place. Who was/is your idol? Steve Prefontaine, he was a long distance runner in The United States of America. He shows that any athlete should go with their strengths, and use their talent to the best of their ability. His story also sends a message to young people to take care of yourself and others around you, but also live your dream. Brief sporting career recap? I started playing soccer when I was a youngen back in primary school at 6 years of age. I played for East Fremantle Soccer club for 11 years, and captained my high school team until I hit the university scene.

I joined UWANFC back in 2008 and this year I’m captaining the reserves team in the Woman’s Premier League. What is your greatest sporting achievement? To be chosen as the captain of my team this year was a great honour. Team achievements would include winning TSWA multiple times over the past 4 years, as well as the bronze and silver medal we gained in the 2009 and 2011 University Games. What do you study at UWA? Passion& Vigilance FEATURE CLUB UWA TAEKWON DO As one of the world’s toughest martial arts, Taekwon Do combines the history of Korean fighting with modern combat techniques. At UWA, the Taekwon Do Club has enjoyed over 20 years of passionate competition. The UWA Taekwon Do Club was founded in the 1980s and was at that time led by International Taekwon Do Federation Senior Master Low Ming Tuck (who continues to teach in the Perth hills area). International Instructor and examiner Adeline Cheong (V Degree Black Belt) has been training with the club since 1990 and Adeline became president in 1993, whilst studying at UWA.

In 2000, Adeline Cheong and Paul Raymond (IV Degree International Instructor and Examiner) took on the instructing at the club and continue in this role training and developing students for competition.

and Karen LeBlanc who won Gold in sparring at the 2009 International Taekwon Do Federation Australian National Championships held at Monash University in Melbourne.

In 2005 the club became a member of the International Taekwon Do Federation in order to gain international accreditation and the opportunity for technical support, international training and competition.

2012 has already seen medical student Lukas Kuster take out the Platinum Fitness Challenge (March) as well as securing a Gold medal in patterns and sparring and Silver in self defence at the All Australian International Taekwon Do Federation State Championships in May.

With the recent change of rules at the Australian University Games the club now has the opportunity to send representatives and plans to have three students participate in the event in September 2012.

The UWA Taekwon Do Club trains on Wednesdays (5.30pm to 7.30pm) and Saturdays (3.30 to 5.30pm) at the International Martial Arts Centre (Claremont Campus Gymnasium).

The club has two Blues Recipients; Donald Clarke, who represented Australia in the 2009 World Championships in sparring

Uni Sport 4 Kids Spring 2012

What is Uni Sport 4 Kids?

Praise for US4K

Uni Sport 4 Kids runs during school holidays and is a fun and exciting, multi-sport day camp for children aged 5-12. US4K exposes children to many different sports in a friendly, non-competitive environment.

Don’t just take our word for it, hear what other parents have to say about US4K!

With the focus on participation and having a good time, this program is excellent for introducing kids to new sports and for keeping them active and happy during the school holidays. US4K is run by an experienced team of enthusiastic and friendly leaders. All leaders are trained in a variety of sports, and each holds a First Aid Qualification and a Working With Children Check.

Enrolments Due to its success and the need to adequately staff the program, enrolment one week before the program commences is recommended. No enrolments will be accepted on the day.

Where To Go UWA Recreation & Fitness Centre, Car Park 1, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley. Visitors paid parking is available in front of the centre.

What To Bring Non-marking sandshoes, a hat, a water bottle, morning tea and lunch (and afternoon tea if staying until 5:30pm). Children are not permitted to purchase food or drinks without a parent or guardian present.

Child Care Rebate Receipts are given as requested and sent in the fortnight after the program.

“US4K Team Leaders are amazing, always feel safe leaving them with my children” - David “my kids have been coming to US4K for 2 years now, and it the highlight of their school holidays” - Zoe “US4K give my kids the opportunity to learn new skills in sports they have never tried before, they love it” - Lisa “a safe environment for my child to play sport” - Ming “US4K allows my child to interact and play sport with kids their own age, they don’t want to go anywhere else on the holidays” - Bella “my kids love it at US4K” - Kellie

Please note: specialist clinics are subject to availability.
