THE MANUFACTURER’S There’s already crossover between the OEM and aftermarket manufacturing sectors with Ninestar/Apex Technologies acquiring Lexmark, so I think it makes sense to summarize the manufacturing consolidation as one segment.Who would have thought Apex would acquire Lexmark and, who would have thought HP would be acquiring Samsung’s Printer Business? So far as my thinking was concerned both of these deals came out of left field. So, the structure of the fully consolidated industry as projected may be no more than educated speculation. It’s difficult to see Xerox surviving as an independent enterprise in the final stages of the consolidation. Already we’ve seen Lexmark and Samsung throw in the towel and a similar outcome may be expected for Xerox in the not-too-distant future. However, any deal as I’ve speculated with HP as an acquirer would be likely to be closely scrutinized by the FTC and the outcome by no means assured. If HP is unable to acquire Xerox for anti-competitive reasons, then look to Canon potentially stepping in. Of course, I don’t know the actual five or six names that may eventually be heading up the fully consolidated industry I’ve projected but, in short, I believe that’s about the final number of enterprises that will be left standing at the conclusion of the endgame. Subject to the thinking of the Fair Trade Commission in Japan, it’s not unreasonable to speculate that their industry may consolidate into two main segments - the A3 players and the A4 players, with perhaps Canon remaining as a standalone. For the aftermarket manufacturers, although it’s likely the endgame will be dominated by the Chinese, I’m hope-

ful there will be three major entities left standing. Ninestar of course, an Hubei Dinglong / SGT combination and, finally, a Clover, Print-Rite, Turbon and LMI combination. However, it’s possible Clover may decide not to stick around for the endgame, so it could look quite different to my current projection with, ultimately, just one or two Chinese entities left to represent the global aftermarket interests. As is shown in the table below, a handful of global manufacturers with combined annual sales of nearly $160 billion, a CR3 of 83% and HHI of 2,500+, spells out an industry defined as highly concentrated with potentially monopolistic power. One country and one government agency would most likely not permit such a consolidation. However, multiple countries and multiple government agencies assessing mergers and acquisitions in light of their own individual markets, not a single global market, may well allow their individual consolidations to take place. THE GLOBAL MANUFACTURERS MERGER ENDGAME

The company name at the head of each column is used for illustrative purposes. While we believe the Japanese A3 and A4 enterprises could consolidate in this manner, we have no way of knowing that either Kyocera Mita or Brother may be the leaders in such an initiative. In the interests of simplification, we have grouped all the major aftermarket manufacturers under the Ninestar banner,rather than attempt to further crowd the table with three separate entities such as Ninestar, Hubei Dinglong, and the Clover Imaging Group. In drilling down to evaluate just the ink and toner segment, (2016 U.S. market size of $25 billion in retail dollars), and as would be supplied by these five or six enterprises, the market would be even more concentrated albeit with a slightly lower CR3 of 72% but with an HHI of over 3,000. I believe the margin dollars on the imaging supplies are one of the key drivers of the consolidation in the industry. The strongest manufacturers will participate in the mergers endgame only if they believe they can protect the existing business model and the high margins earned off the supplies.

Of course, merging two large organizations leads to other synergies that may be vigorously extracted but, the crown jewels for future profits are ink and toner. This is so important for an independent reseller to understand because it means the days of $100 OEM brand cartridges are not going to go away anytime soon. Even if the overall market for office products and, in particular, ink and toner is entering a slow decline of 1% or so per year, then it will remain a large market for the foreseeable future, with plenty of growth opportunity for savvy reseller’s attacking the top-end of the market. THE RESELLER’S The reselling sector of the industry in the United States is not concentrated and remains very competitive. However, what we learned in May 2016 is that the FTC in the United States would not allow the merger of the two biggest reseller’s, Staples and Office Depot, after they narrowly defined the market for office supplies (excluding ink and toner) in the B2B segment and determined the merged entities would have monopolistic power. Despite the failure of the proposed acquisition, I don’t believe this means either Staples or Office Depot is off the table in terms of future M&A activity - just not with each other.

I think the outlook for the mergers endgame and the reseller’s in the United States needs to be considered in the context of the emergence of the three Chinese aftermarket superpowers (Ninestar, Hubei Dinglong, and Suzhou Goldengreen Technology) and their probable desire to increase market share for their products in the U.S.

With Ninestar’s 2015 acquisition of Static Control and SGT’s acquisition of Cartridge World, we’ve already seen evidence that the Chinese will acquire U.S. companies with the distribution relationships that will further their goal to increase market share. We haven’t talked specifically about it before, but Chinabased Han Group is in the final stages of closing their deal to acquire Ingram Micro, a major Information Technology distributor, for over $6 billion. Ingram is a significant player in the distribution of OEM ink and toner cartridges and, it may not be beyond the realms of possibility, that one or more of the Chinese aftermarket superpowers are already talking to Han Group about the possibilities of placing Chinese products into distribution through Ingram Micro. In this context, think about the Chinese potentially acquiring either Depot or even Staples. Now, I’m not suggesting that an aftermarket manufacturer such as Ninestar or Hubei Dinglong would go in this direction, but the Han Group or other similar Chinese investors may be interested. Regardless of who it may be (if anyone) then you can imagine the likelihood of relationships being leveraged to help place Chinese products into distribution through their new owners. Events of this nature just have the potential to completely change the way we’ve become

Loss of the OEM rebates for failing to achieve predetermined sales quotas would be a risky strategy to follow - particularly as Staples (in this case) would be well positioned to compete for accounts potentially compromised within an aggressive “OEM to aftermarket” conversion strategy. So, just like with the endgame for the manufacturers is not likely to disrupt the existing cartel arrangements for pricing and market shares, then I believe the same is true for the mergers endgame for the Tier-1 resellers. Knowing this to be the case should provide significant reassurance to the Tier-2 reseller’s of office products that, looking “up” to the “Blue Ocean” of Office Depot and Staples customers and competing for that business, rather than looking “down” to the “Red Ocean” of the dog-eat-dog internet based e-commerce marketplaces, will be a significant growth opportunity for many years to come.

All in Print China Brings Together Innovators The sixth edition of All in Print China, which took place last month, brought together 724 exhibitors showcasing all the advancements in the imaging industry from the last few years, and not just from China. The expo welcomed an average of 76,818 visitors from all over the world on each of its five days, up by a quarter from its last edition, in 2014.

Inkjets Have Bright Future Low-cost, high-reliability transistors are about to usher in a new stage of the printing tech revolution that started with 3D printers. They could in the future allow anyone to print their own customized smart watch or any other smart device on an inkjet printer. The new transistors are made from an organic, carbonbased material instead of silicon, and completely rely on inkjet printers for the construction, rather than combining it with other material-deposition methods, which means the process will be quicker. In addition to smart devices, inkjet printers are in for a bright future in food applications, as well. Food packaging, for instance, is a major growth area, with new types of inkjets – including small, portable ones – being capable of producing customized packages, complete with expiration date that would be hard to counterfeit.

Penn State Scientists Boast 1,000x Increase in Printing Speeds A research team from Pennsylvania State University is working on a technique that can make both 2D and 3D printing as much as 1,000 times faster. The innovation involved eliminating the electric field-induced phase transition in a nanodisordered potassium tantalite niobate (KTN) crystal. This allowed for the major acceleration of the speed of a space-charge-controlled KTN beam deflector, by three orders of magnitude. Apparently, this breakthrough could make printers of any beam-scanning technology print considerably faster.

Naturally, all the big names in each of these business segments were present: Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Fuji Xerox, Epson, Fujifilm, and Screen.

InfoTrends Says Required Printing Still Dominates Market The latest report on printing trends from InfoTrends has revealed that required printing still has the upper hand over optional, at 60% of the market, versus 40% for optional. Among the other findings of the report, titled The Future of Office Printing, are that, contrary to expectations, young office workers do not print significantly less than older counterparts and, in tune with expectations, traditional offices generate the greatest print volumes. The survey, among 750 office workers, also discovered that two-thirds of companies are actively seeking ways to either simplify or automate their document-related business processes, including printing. As regards volumes, less than half of respondents, 40% said that to date less than 25% of their company documents are printed.

HP Launches 33 Printers in India HP has launched as many as 33 new printers for the Indian market, including 17 A4 ones and 16 A3 ones. The launches, according to Indian media, reflect the printing major’s focus on the huge Indian market, all the more so since HP currently only has 5% of the $55-billion A3 printer and copier market globally, as compared with 44% of the A4 printer market, which makes it the leader in the segment. The launch follows HP’s $1.05-billion acquisition of Samsung’s printer operations, giving it access to technology it could incorporate into its future models.

3D Printer Sales to Reach Half a Million This Year

Global sales of 3D printers are seen to reach 456,000 this year, according to Gartner, the technology market researchers. This, says the company, will further increase to as many as 6.7 million printers in just four years, representing a pretty healthy annual growth rate. Gartner’s vice president for research, Pete Brasiliere, commented that these developments reflect 3D printing’s turning into a mainstream technology that is equally appealing to individual users and businesses alike. This is due to its multiple uses that have clearly gone far beyond rapid prototyping. This year, North America and Western Europe will drive the 3D printer sales, but over the next four years they will be overtaken by China and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

French Company Builds Silicone 3D Printer

Silicone is a difficult material to use in 3D printing but for those who find away to do it, the future holds huge promise. So far there were just two companies that had developed their special silicone 3D printers, British Fripp Design Research and Wacker Chemie. Now there is a third entrant in this special segment of the 3D printing industry: Sterne Elastomere. The French company specializes in silicone materials for a range of industries, from medicine to food. Now they are about to showcase their SiO-Shaping 1601 silicone 3D printer at the upcoming K2016 expo in Germany. The printer has been designed with rapid prototyping in mind, with the company promising that the silicone prototype will exhibit the same physical properties as the finished product, which would be a definite advantage over thermoplastic prototypes.

Divergent 3D Brings Tech to OEMs

Divergent 3D is a company that focuses on 3D printing car components, using its proprietary direct metal sintering method. Now, it’s bringing this technology to OEMs, after sealing a partnership deal with Peugeot Citroen (PSA) and an engineering firm, Altran. The three together will strive to make 3D printing car components at scale more cheaply and less energy-intensively than the current mould presses. According to Divergent’s chief executive, with a factory of 16 3D printers, each of them worth $1 million, could churn out 10,000 vehicles annually – an impressive figure, which becomes even more impressive when you consider the customization and design flaw removal opportunities that 3D printing provides.

Austrian Scientists 3D Print Magnets

A team of scientists from the Technical University of Vienna, Austria, have managed to 3D print magnets, using a commercial-grade printer and CAD software. Basically, this means that they can create magnets of any shape and, respectively, with a magnetic field of a corresponding shape. The implications are major: the power and shape of magnetic fields is essential in many magnet applications, for instance, in medical devices, so the more customizable a magnetic field is, the more efficient these devices be. Now the researchers will continue experimenting, to see how far they could take the customization of magnetic fields utilizing 3D printing tech.

A Quick Guide Through 3D Printing Resins

More and more stereolitography and digital light processing desktop 3D printers are entering the consumer market, so it pays to know the difference between the most popular types of resins they use. Here’s a overview of 9 such resins. General purpose These are produced by generic resin makers such as makerJuice, MadeSolid, and Spot-A Materials and come in different colors, to be used with a variety of low-cost 3D printers. Tough resins General purpose resins tend to be easily breakable and some 3D print users require a tougher material, so 3D printing materials makers have started coming up with stronger, more durable resins. Castable resins These are used by jewelers and dental technicians to make molds for various objects. The distinguishing feature of these resins is their high burnout, which means that when they are used as casting molds, they burn out in the process, leaving only the metal item behind. Flexible resins These are the opposite of tough resins, aimed at producing rubbery, easily manipulated objects. These resins are used in soft and elastic product prototyping, including water bottles, grips, and handles.

Currently, the only producer of this type of resins is Photocentric 3D, which applies an LCD screen to cure the photopolymer, making the process cheaper. Open-source resin This is the brainchild of Autodesk, which released the recipe for its DLP resin openly, allowing anyone to make their own 3D printing material at home. The recipe can, like all recipes, be modified to produce new materials, as well.

High-temperature resins There is just one company for now that produces resins capable of withstanding high temperatures, and that’s Formlabs. These resins can be used for injection-molding

Scientists from Harvard University have 3D printed the first heart-on-a-chip – a microphysiological system allowing medics to study specific diseases and collect reliable data for further research without the participation of actual patients. Stratasys and Siemens have partnered on bringing 3D printing and traditional manufacturing closer together. The 3D printer maker will now incorporate Siemens’ Digital Factory lineup with its own technology. Remanufacturing the Samsung ProXpress M3080 M4080 MLT-D201 Toner Cartridge By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. The MLT-D201L/S cartridges do not have a drum cover, and come new with a piece of heavy paper with a thin sheet of foam on the inside. The protective sheet is held in place by a shipping lock that holds the PCR roller away from the drum. This lock helps prevent flat spots that can occur during storage. See Figures A, B & C Once again there are no screws in the outside of the cartridge at all. There are plastic rivets that need to be cut off, holes drilled and screws installed to hold them back on. It’s not a hard process and it’s covered completely in the instructions. It is very important however that all three places on each end cap be drilled and screwed back in place. If this is not done, print defects such as banding will occur. See Figures 1 & 2 One new item on these cartridges is set of metallic labels over one of the rivets. There is a small amount of adhesive under the second label we believe for spacing. In the printer there is a slot for an optical sensor but in out M3080 machine this slot is empty. It is unknown if Samsung plans to put them in later on but to be safe the labels should be put back in place when remanufacturing the cartridge. I used small amount of silicon under the label to replace the old adhesive. See Figures 3 & 3A The standard cartridge (Samsung Part # MLT-D201S) is rated for 10,000 pages. The HY cartridge (Samsung Part # MLT-D203L) is rated for 20,000 pages. As with pretty much all cartridges these days the cartridge has a chip and it has to be replaced each cycle. The OEM chips are regional so be sure to get the proper chip for your region. The MLT-D201S has a list price of $164.99, the MLT-D203L has a list price of $195.99.

12) Remove the two screws from the wiper blade, remove the blade. See Figure 22

14) Install the new wiper blade and two screws. It is easier to install if you slide it in under the PCR holders. See Figure 24

install the PCR and holders. The holders will fit over their slots as you align them. Press them down and check to make sure the springs are working. 惠普牌“定时炸弹”:

宣战还 是 试探? “炸弹”引爆,毫无预兆 2016 年 9 月 13 日,对于荷兰打印机耗材供应商 123inkt 公司来说,这天本来又是一个 普通得不能再普通的日子。 但是平静的时光很快就被打破了,该公司在一天之内突然收到了超过 1000 次投诉,投诉 的内容非常一致: 9 月 13 日当天,在惠普打印机上使用的第三方墨盒突然失效,无法继续工作。 短时间内出现如此大规模的投诉是非常罕见的现象,123inkt 公司对此非常重视。经调查, 该公司发现本次第三方墨盒集体失效的锅并不该由自己来背,问题实际上出自惠普以前的 一次固件升级。惠普该次固件升级会导致适用于惠普打印机的第三方墨盒无法使用,甚至 直接破坏第三方墨盒。 123inkt 的遭遇并不是偶然,因为全世界范围内很快都传来了惠普打印机拒绝第三方墨 盒的报告,而且被波及的惠普打印机用户非常广泛。由于规模巨大,且惠普打印机品牌在 市场内占有优势地位,本次事件很快引来了包括 BBC、《卫报》、《华尔街日报》等权威媒 体的关注。 据报道,事件中受影响的打印机均为惠普 OfficeJet 系列的喷墨打印机产品,包括了 OfficeJet、OfficeJet Pro、 OfficeJet Pro X 等几个子系列。上述系列打印机之前一直可接受由 第三方生产销售的低价兼容耗材,但在 9 月 13 日却开始集体拒绝第三方耗材。由于惠普最 近一次固件升级是在事件发生的半年前,也就是今年的三月份,因此可以推测惠普在此次 固件升级时做了手脚,添加了一个会延迟生效的程序,该程序会让打印机在固件升级后的 半年拒绝机器正在使用的非官方墨盒。 对于惠普本次固件升级,《卫报》在新闻标题里直接用“定时炸弹(timebomb)”来形 容。惠普在进行该次固件升级时,对外宣称此举是为了“保护惠普的创新成果和知识产权”, 但其实际效果却不止如 此。实际上,突然性的 第三方墨盒出错损害了 很多打印机用户的利 益,不仅破坏了正在使 用的墨盒,而且用户的 日常工作带来了麻烦。 很显然,惠普这次 引爆的“定时炸弹”颇 有些 “损人利己” 的味道。
