ARSENALE REVITALIZATION Rome Design Studio Tom Rankin University of Minnesota- Twin Cities Spring 2013

This project was a rehabilitation of the historic Arsenale site into a valuable social space, which connects the surrounding neighborhood of Trastevere to the Tiber river. My approach engaged the site by using a central axis that creates an inherent path through the site directed by a view of the Aventine Hill, a feature common in many designs throughout Rome. In order to traverse the Arsenale site landscape, one continually returns to the central axis. The path culminates in a direct connection to the Tiber River.

The main feature of my design is the centrally located Bicycle Workshop. This multipurpose structure is both public and private. The interior is rentable workspace, intended to support a collaborative environment, focused on resource sharing. There are two entrances to the workshop, the first allows for easy access from Trastevere, the second allows for easy access from the Tiber bike trail. The roof of the building acts as a bridge that leads the path through the site down to the river.
