Plant Sterols? What is that? Plant sterols, also known as phytosterols, are plant-based compounds that occur naturally in fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole-grain products and most vegetable oils, but usually at levels too low to effect LDL cholesterol. But plant sterols can be added to other foods at beneficial levels that help lower blood cholesterol and reduce risk of coronary heart disease. Corazonas Tortilla Chips and Oatmeal Squares are infused with plant sterols, which are proven in more than 140 clinical studies to help fight heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol.

Plant sterols are safe, natural and highly effective as part of a heart healthy diet. Extensive human clinical research indicating that plant sterols and sterol esters substantially and consistently lower blood levels of total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol has led to the inclusion of these compounds in foods and supplements. Recently, the FDA granted GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) for a variety of foods containing natural phytosterols, including the salty snack category in which Corazonas is included.

Eating Smart for your Heart

Fruits and Vegetables may be Linked to Happiness

From what determines good and bad cholesterol, to foods that are reported to raise cholesterol and those that lower it, it can be difficult to keep track! According to Livestrong.com, the only foods that contain cholesterol come from animals, however there are foods that can raise your cholesterol because of their high amounts of saturated fats, like added sugars, whole-fat dairy products, and plant foods from the tropics (i.e. coconut, palm oil, and cocoa butter).

A recent study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology found a link between fruit and vegetable consumption and positive mental attitude. During the research, investigators analyzed 21 days of dietary data from 281 New Zealanders who were between 18 to 25 years old. With increased fruit and vegetable consumption, the participants experienced increased levels of calmness, happiness, and energy. The study was conducted in order to build off previous research that showed links between negative emotions and unhealthy diets rich in sugar and fats. This is not the first time a connection between eating plants and positive mental health has been found. According to the Mental Health Foundation, nearly two-thirds of people who do not report suffering from daily mental health issues also have a daily diet of fruit and vegetables. - Thomas Dean

Cholesterol can be a confusing subject!

Luckily, there are foods out there that can actually lower your cholesterol and that also taste great! One of these is plant sterols, which naturally occur in very small amounts in fruits, vegetables, nuts and other plant-based foods. In fact, based on research published in Lipids in Health and Disease, “plant sterols are an important dietary component for lowering LDL cholesterol and maintaining good heart health. All Corazonas snacks are infused with plant sterols, which are clinically proven to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. In order to receive the amount of plant sterols found in one Oatmeal Square, you would have to eat 61 tomatoes or 30 apples! - Rebecca Haber

Break free from the food Pyramid The USDA recently announced a new version of the food pyramid, called MyPlate. The new nutritional recommendations place more focus on proper portion sizes for each meal rather than the total number of daily servings for each food group. MyPlate also offers a few pointers for healthier eating habits, including making half of your plate fruits and vegetables, and increasing your intake of whole grains. In addition, the new recommendations suggest drinking more water and low-fat or non-fat dairy, comparing sodium in foods and selecting those with lower amounts, and to be mindful of balancing your calories. - Rebecca Haber

What are plant sterols? Plant sterols, also known as phytosterols, are plant-based compounds that can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, a.k.a. “bad cholesterol.” We consume plant sterols every day naturally when we eat fruit, vegetables, whole-grain products and most vegetable oils, but usually at levels too low to effect LDL cholesterol. However, scientific studies have shown that plant sterols can be added to foods at levels that can result in lower blood cholesterol and reduced risk for coronary heart disease. How do plant sterols work? Plant sterols have a similar structure to LDL cholesterol and therefore cannot be distinguished by the body. They work by inhibiting the absorption of LDL cholesterol in the small intestine by up to 50%, which in turn can lower LDL blood cholesterol by 5-14%. Cholesterol is absorbed in the small intestine at specific sites called micelles. When consumed, plant sterols compete with cholesterol to attach to these sites, effectively blocking the cholesterol and forcing it to exit the body unabsorbed. What clinical studies have been conducted to validate your LDL lowering claim? Corazonas’ cholesterol-lowering efficacy in humans was established by a Brandeis University clinical trial. The results of this study were published in the Journal of Nutrition in June 2004 and showed a 15% LDL (“bad”) cholesterol reduction of natural phytosterol-enriched chips without affecting HDL (“good”) cholesterol. The science supporting the ability of plant sterols to reduce cholesterol is overwhelming and has been endorsed by the American Heart Association and The American Dietetic Association for individuals who have high cholesterol. Additionally, there is substantial science behind the ability of oats (which are in Corazonas Oatmeal Squares) to reduce cholesterol. - Rebecca Haber

Help your Heart with Tasty Snacks

About Corazonas We refuse to believe treating high cholesterol has to take the joy out of life. That statement, which drives everything we do, is the result of personal experience. We’ve watched loved ones give up all their favorite foods – especially their snacks. We’ve seen what that kind of deprivation can do to the joy of eating. Then one day, we found a way to turn the tables, so to speak. With a little known, strange sounding, secret of nature called plant sterols. “Heart disease took my grandfathers. Then it took my dad. And I didn’t know who was next in my family. Me? Maybe my brothers? That’s because, like a lot of people’s families, heart disease runs in mine. My father tried hard to do whatever he could to take care of his heart. But his genetic predisposition threw strikes one and two and good old human nature struck out for him. I watched him fight hard, exercising every day and giving up his favorite foods. There weren’t a lot of options to keep the fun in eating – options that included “great taste.” I believed there had to be a better way, and with the help of some friends, investors, scientists and a lot of other very caring people, I found that way. My company – Corazonas Foods – is my revenge against heart disease, starting with its number one foot soldier, high cholesterol.” – Ramona Cappello, Founder & President, Corazonas Foods
