ime really flies! This year has flown by and it’s hard to believe it’s already coming to an end. It’s been a great year at ABoR and I’m thankful to have served as ABoR’s 2016 president. I would like to say thank you to the members and staff of this great association for their continued support. I’m excited to pass along my role to Brandy Guthrie of Sky Realty. I know the association is going to be in great hands with her as your 2017 president. Join me in welcoming Brandy! President’s Column By Shavonne Martin • 2016 President

2016 year in review

I

t has been a great honor serving as the president of the Williamson County Association of REALTORS during 2016. It seems just like yesterday I was taking the oath to serve the membership and advance the REALTOR image across Williamson County. I have been truly blessed to have been given this honor. Last month’s article was on the power of “thank you” and now it is my turn. To everyone who has helped make this year a success, from my fellow leaders on the Board of Directors, our committee chairs, committee members, and the Association staff; this year would not have been nearly as successful without you, your talents, and the countless hours you have devoted to serving the membership. For that, I say “thank you for your selfless dedication.” 2016 was a wonderful year for WCREALTORS and a year of great accomplishments. We surpassed 1,800 members for the first time in Association history. Our members invested over $50,000 in TREPAC for the first time, and for the first time, we had over 60 percent participation. The Scholarship Founda-

tion was resurrected and raised over $10,000 to assist with the rising cost of a college education. In addition, our Community Service Committee was responsible for raising over 27,000 pounds of food for our local area food pantries. This was also a year of events at WCREALTORS. We had the largest Super Bowl of Builders in the history of the Association with 31 builders from across Central Texas and over 500 attendees. This event was so big in fact, the 2017 Super Bowl of Builders will be moving to a new venue for 2017! Mark your calendars for February 2 at the Dell Diamond. Our West Side Story Bus Tour was such a success, the Events Committee had to add a third bus to charter the 150 attendees across Western Williamson County! In May, we held a successful golf tournament at Berry Creek Country Club, and in August, we experienced another first where the Association held our very successful Luxury Bus Tour! Most recently, we’ve completed a beautiful Installation and Awards Banquet at the brand new Georgetown Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center where the 2017

leadership was installed. Congratulations to everyone who helped make these events a success, especially the attendees who supported the Association by attending them. One of the main focuses in the Board of Directors’ Strategic Plan is to “be a ‘nexus’ of education and information.” Education at WCREALTORS has soared to new levels this year. We have added dozens of new classes to the Association calendar in 2016. In addition, the Association has added many free educational seminars; such as: the Williamson County Series, Economic Update, Affordable Housing town hall meeting and more! In addition to the new classes, attendance is up at the classes as well! The successes of 2016 would not be complete without mentioning the formation of the Central Texas MLS partnership between WCREALTORS, Four Rivers Association of

REALTORS and the Temple-Belton Board of REALTORS. This newly formed MLS is an optional addition to the current ACTRIS MLS, and is not meant to replace that service. On the contrary, CTXMLS is an opportunity for agents to broaden the reach of their listing to agents on the southern and northern edges of Central Texas. With the addition of the CTXMLS and the increased educational offerings, it is safe to say that WCREALTORS has met and exceeded its goal of being the “‘nexus’ of education and information.” Thank you again to everyone who helped make 2016 the most successful year for the Williamson County Association of REALTORS. It has been a pleasure serving as your president. I wish great success for our incoming President, Suzanne Gantner; I cannot wait to see the amazing things she will accomplish. RL

s we get ready for another holiday season and the close to yet another year gone by, builders and REALTORS alike are in the midst of making business plans for 2017. This will be my last column as president of the HBA of Greater Austin and I want to take the opportunity to invite you to the Annual Housing Forecast on January 19. Learn from real estate industry analysts about the trends from 2016 and set expectations for the year ahead. Gain local and national economic information to effectively plan your business strategy. Eldon Rude of 360º Real Estate Analytics will moderate the program. He’ll conclude the event with his analysis of the market followed by a forecast of what Central Texas can expect in 2017. Joining Rude will be Colleen Sharp, associate head and vice president for Insights Integration and Dr. Greg Hallman, senior lecturer in real estate finance at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.

Eldon Rude, 360º Real Estate Analytics: As Principal of 360° Real Estate Analytics, Eldon Rude advises clients in housing, develop-

ment, banking, commercial real estate and the government sector. He has worked in real estate in Texas for 30 years, earning a reputation for thorough analysis and candid insight. Eldon has lived in Austin since 1979 and is active in numerous professional organizations including the HBA where he serves on the board and is part of the Home PAC, Membership and Nominating Committees. He is also involved with RECA and the Urban Land Institute where he is Programs Chair and a member of the Executive Committee and Advisory Board. For nearly 18 years, Eldon was director for Metrostudy's Central Texas region. Prior to that, he was a partner in the Aegis Group where he practiced commercial real estate appraisal for 12 years, obtaining his MAI designation in 1990. Eldon is a finance graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.

BDr. Greg Hallman is a Senior Lecturer in Real Estate Finance at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Hallman received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Texas in 1996, then worked in consulting for six years in Palo Alto, California, and returned to Austin and the university in 2002 to begin his teaching career with McCombs. Dr. Hallman teaches courses in valuation, investment theory, and real estate capital markets, and also serves as the faculty director of the McCombs Real Estate Investment Fund, a student-run fund managing approximately $1 million in a domestic REIT portfolio. In addition to his teaching and investment fund work, Dr. Hallman also serves as the Senior Managing Director of the McCombs Real Estate Finance and Investment Center. Its Austin market has had a successful year, opening a second office with locations in North and South Austin with over 40 employees. Youngblood, Director of Member Services and Professional Development of the Austin Board of REALTORS, is being honored by the National Association of REALTORS with the Kelea Youngblood REALTOR association Certified Executive (RCE) designation, which recognizes exceptional efforts made by REALTOR association executives. Kelea is one of over 450 REALTOR association executives who have achieved this mark of excellence. Local and state association executives who hold the RCE designation represent REALTORS in 48 states/ territories. “This is truly an honor and I am very

proud to be receiving this designation. It is a high point in my career as an association executive,” Youngblood said. Prior to becoming a candidate for the RCE designation, applicants must document their association management and academic experiences. Once they have completed this first step, eligible candidates must successfully complete a multiple choice exam, which is based on a comprehensive understanding of association operations and management practices. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of areas critical to REALTOR association management, including association law, governance and issues related to member services. To retain the designation, RCEs must be recertified every four years. Youngblood will receive an award plaque from representatives of the Texas Association of REALTORS during an upcoming event. RL
