This is the second ever competitive match between Whitecaps FC and Real Salt Lake. Vancouver lost 2-0 on June 4 in Sandy, Utah on goals by Jean Alexandre and Fabian Espindola. That is the worst defeat Vancouver has suffered in MLS. In preseason, Vancouver won 2-1 in Casa Grande, Arizona, on February 1, on goals by #31 Russell Teibert and #7 Terry Dunfield, while #10 Arturo Alvarez replied for Real.

Whitecaps FC have lost four straight in MLS play, and five straight in all competitions. Forward #36 Mustapha Jarju became Vancouver's second Designated Player on Wednesday after three successful seasons with Belgium's Royal Albert-Elisabeth Club (RAEC) de Mons, scoring 43 goals in 118 matches and helping win promotion to Belgium's top-flight last season. Jarju is alternate captain of the Gambian national team and has scored four goals in 25 senior international appearances, primarily as midfielder. He turns 25 on Monday. Newly acquired defender Jordan Harvey is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. He was acquired from Philadelphia Union on July 7 in exchange for allocation money. In his sixth MLS season, the 27-year-old had 16 starts and 1,241 minutes this year with the Union. The former US U-20 spent four seasons with Colorado Rapids, 2006-09, then was acquired by Philadelphia in the 2009 MLS expansion draft. Midfielder Terry Dunfield was traded to Toronto FC on Thursday in exchange for allocation money and future considerations. Midfielder #22 Shea Salinas is available tonight after serving a one game suspension for a red card he received in the 1-0 loss to Columbus Crew. Forward and designated player #29 Eric Hassli has 7G 0A in all competitions. His 85th minute goal at Seattle on June 4 is a clear candidate for MLS Goal of the Year, and has over 5 million hits on YouTube. It was nominated for an ESPY for Best Play, in this past Wednesday's award but lost out to US women’s national team forward Abby Wambach and her dramatic stoppagetime equalizer against Brazil in the World Cup Forward #37 Camilo leads Vancouver in scoring with 7G 1A in all competitions. His header goal June 25 against Sporting Kansas City was up for MLS Goal of the Week. Camilo was named MLS Player of the Week for week three after scoring 2G 1A in the 3-3 draw with Sporting Kansas City, as he became the first player in MLS history to score twice in stoppage time. Goalkeeper Jay Nolly started his MLS career with Real Salt Lake, playing seven games from 2005-06. Midfielder #16 Nizar Khalfan missed the June 4 meeting between these teams while playing for Tanzania in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Central Africa Republic. Defender #2 Michael Boxall missed the June 4 meeting between these teams while playing for the New Zealand national team in friendlies against Mexico and Australia. Midfielder #20 Davide Chiumiento has been among the MLS assist leaders all season. He currently has 1G 7A in 15GP. He suffered a right hamstring strain June 25 in Kansas City, coming off at half-time Defender #25 Jonathan Leathers played his 50th career MLS match in last Saturday's 2-1 loss to Colorado Rapids. Ten-year MLS veteran midfielder #33 Peter Vagenas made his 200th MLS start in the 1-0 loss to Columbus Crew on July 6. Defender and captain #6 Jay DeMerit is back on the injured list. Earlier in the season he missed ten matches due to a groin injury suffered playing for the US national team in a 0-1 loss to Paraguay in Nashville, Tennessee on March 29. Striker Atiba Harris started his MLS career with Real Salt Lake, playing 43 games from 2006-07. Harris underwent successful knee surgery to his right meniscus on April 26. He's been one of Whitecaps FC's top attackers this season with 2G 3A in 5GP. 17-year-old forward #17 Omar Salgado has been named to the US U-18 national team for the Northern Ireland Milk Cup and will be away July 21 till the end of the month, missing Vancouver's home match against LA Galaxy. Salgado got his first MLS start and scored his first MLS goal in Vancouver's 2-1 loss away to Columbus Crew April 30. Salgado was the top pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and was cleared by FIFA to play for Whitecaps FC this season without having to wait until he turns 18. Forward #23 Long Tan became the first Chinese-born to play in MLS when he subbed in at 88' in Philadelphia on March 26. From 2005 to 2010, Whitecaps FC head athletic trainer Jake Joachim was a member of the staff at Real Salt Lake.

Midfielder #10 Arturo Alvarez scored against Whitecaps FC when these teams met in preseason on February 1 in a 2-1 Vancouver win in Casa Grande, Arizona. Alvarez also played 20 minutes against Whitecaps FC while with San Jose Earthquakes, in a 4-3 San Jose exhibition win in Vancouver on Sept 1, 2003. Midfielder #12 Jean Alexandre played against Vancouver in the United Soccer League First Division (USL-1) while with Austin Aztex. He scored two goals against Whitecaps FC in a 3-2 Vancouver home win over Austin on Sept 4, 2009, and also scored when Real Salt Lake defeated Vancouver 2-0 on June 4. Forward #23 Paulo Jr. played against Vancouver with Miami FC in USL-1 in 2009 and the USSF D-2 Pro League in 2010. Goalkeeper Tim Melia played against Vancouver with Rochester Rhinos in USL-1 in 2008-09. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando played under Whitecaps FC coach Tom Soehn at D.C. United from 2003-06 when Soehn was an assistant coach. Midfielder #20 Ned Grabavoy was a teammate of Vancouver midfielder #33 Peter Vagenas at LA Galaxy from 2004-06. Midfielder #8 Will Johnson missed the June 4 meeting between these teams while playing for Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Former Whitecaps midfielder Terry Dunfield was also on the Canadian squad. New to the squad since these teams last met is former Armenian youth international forward #14 Artur Aghasyan from Ventura County Fusion of the USL PDL.
