A GIF T FOR HIS WIFE
SOLD AF TER SCANDAL
As a gift to his wife, actress Katherine Clemmons, Howard Gould planned an estate on a seaside tract on New York’s Long Island to rival the countryside manors of Britain and Ireland.
After an ugly divorce in 1909 prior to the completion of the main house, Gould moved to Europe eight years later, selling the christened “Hempstead House” to David Guggenheim.
Legacy here may be understood as something of great value to be handed down from one generation to another, or passed on to other
parties for preservation and continued use. 2
