Shannon Crotty Founder & Editor in Chief, Queen of the Castle Magazine
About five years ago, I was introduced to Shannon Crotty, founder and Editor in Chief of the Queen of the Castle Magazine a monthly publication geared to women, based out of Eau Claire, WI. I was introduced to Shannon in a way that is truly an illustration of the joy and encouragement that she and the Queen staff spread across the community. The Queen sponsored a contest in which they recognized women of the community for their personal and professional achievements. I had been nominated for and received an award. That wonderful experience introduced me to one of the most positive, joy- focused, BEST-tacular women that I have ever met in my life, Shannon Crotty. The “Queen of the Castle Magazine is wildly popular. Shannon has a large readership in northwestern Wisconsin. Her readers know her as editor and contributor to the publication, but they don’t really “know her as a person. When I think about a person that would have a positive, unique, and passionate perspective about living their BEST life, Shannon came to mind. As a reader of the Queen of the Castle, and a big fan of Shannon’s “energy, I was excited to ask Shannon for a contribution and even more excited to read her response. I hope you are too.

“It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want - oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so! “ ~ Mark Twain As Midwesterners we are all too familiar with the ache/ joy of “spring fever.â€? We’ve endured/survived/enjoyed winter’s hibernation and now our thoughts turn to warm weather, longer walks, fresh smells, and colors other than gray. We have been at rest—like the trees and soil—and now something is calling us to awaken. What is it about spring that calls you? Are there rituals that help create a sense of renewal for you? For me it is lilacs, golf (or at least the hope of golf), and getting on the motorcycle. Our rituals have the capacity to energize us, to comfort us, and to prepare us for what’s next. We are metaphorically clearing out the cobwebs (whether we Ă€QGWKHPDORQJWKHFHLOLQJRULQRXUWKLQNLQJ

It starts with knowing that these matter to you—that you deserve the good they will bring. Your BEST when...
BALANCED The teeter totter of life shifts
between obligations on the work and personal sides of life. To be our BEST, we strive to keep the teeter totter level, so neither is overwhelmed. For busy professionals with multiple obligations, that goal of balance seems impossible. In his book, Leadership from the Inside Out, Kevin Cashman features a chapter on personal mastery in which he talks about the concept of resiliency. Teaching and building resiliency in our youth is common. Young people are resilient by nature they don’t struggle with change in the way adults often do. But we recognize the value of helping them “bounce or spring back, to be resilient! Consider the concept of resiliency as adults and leaders. We need to “bounce and spring back too! Looking at the teeter totter of life as a resilient adult, the practice could be applied somewhat differently.

Perhaps the goal is not to balance the sides to create a stable platform but instead to be resilient in managing the rapid shifts of the teeter totter and thus not fall off. Or, if you do fall off, to “bounce or spring back. To be REAL, achieving the best BALANCE in life is probably a bit of each – stability on the platform and resiliency in responding to the shifts. Some days, your focus may be to stabilize the platform. Others, your goal may simply be not to fall off. Either way – both ways – you achieve your BEST.
