The original scheme for this site was a multi-storey, multi-million dollar, 720 square metre weekender. However, the downturn in the property market encouraged the client to reassess their priorities and they worked with the architect to understand the fundamental qualities of a family beach house.

Architect

The result was a genuine ‘sweep out’ beach shack with a strong connection to the landscape, driven by simple but solid design principles and a home that is a fun place for a young family to enjoy the sun, sand and water in relative comfort. The house challenges the established social vernacular of the adjoining beachfront properties. The single-storey house was located in the centre of the site to avoid being dwarfed by the two-storey neighbours and adjacent resort. From the beachside public reserve the house is viewed as a modest beach home floating subtly above the landscape, detached from its more self-conscious neighbours. The resulting plan is simple. A long, one room wide pavilion stretches along the southern boundary and opens up every space to the north. A covered breezeway separates the adults retreat from the main house creating a resortlike feel with privacy and solitude for the parents. The living spaces spill out onto generous covered decks which enjoy a subtle three step connection to the landscaped gardens.
