THE SNAKE IS IN THE HOUSE As the heat, dry weather and fires continue across the country, many forms of native wildlife are heading into built-up areas in search of water or food. While we enjoy seeing the occasional furry marsupial, it may not be so thrilling to find a snake around the house. There have been numerous reports recently of homeowners finding snakes in odd places, including a python wrapped around a baby girl and an elderly Queenslander bitten by an Eastern Brown. Then there was the distressing footage of a snake trying to keep its hold on the wing of a plane it had inadvertently stowed away on this week. The Wildlife Information and Rescue Service (WIRES) has released a fact sheet on snakes so you know the best way to handle the situation if a snake should turn up at your place. Some key points are – The most dangerous thing you can do when confronted by a snake is attempt to provoke, kill or capture it. Over 90 per cent of snake bite victims were doing just that when they were bitten. All Australian reptiles are protected by law and you can be fined for needlessly killing them. Snakes play a vital part in maintaining the natural balance of the environment. No Australian snake can move faster than a ‘normal’ person can walk. However, they can strike very swiftly so keep your distance. You may not be able to avoid snakes entirely, but you can improve the odds by keeping the grass around your home short, fitting a cover strip to the bottom of external doors, sealing off under-floor air vents or access under floors, verandas, steps etc. and storing all animal food in mouse-proof containers. If you encounter a snake, note where it is and what it looks like then call your local wildlife agent. If someone is bitten, keep them calm. Do not wash the bite as swabs of venom will be necessary for identification. DO NOT attempt to catch or kill the snake; hospitals should have a Venom Detection Kit that will identify the venom. Immediately apply firm, broad bandages over the bite – as many as are available. The bandage should be firm but not too tight. Immobilise the limb by applying a splint. Carry the victim to transport, avoiding any physical exertion by victim. Contact the hospital in advance, notifying them of the snakebite, the victim’s condition and if possible, a description of the snake. If you suspect a snake has bitten your pet, seek urgent veterinarian assistance. Your animal will probably show signs of shock, stress or discomfort such as panting, salivating, excessive drinking, vomiting, disorientation and staggering. There is often unsteadiness or paralysis in the hind legs. In conclusion, the good folk at WIRES remind us that fears are usually caused by the ‘unknown’. If you are afraid of snakes, try learning more about them.

Ray White Kiama Stockland has heralded 2013 as the ‘year to make a change’, with communities around New South Wales already showing signs of increased buyer enquiry during the Christmas and New Year period. Foot traffic to Stockland’s latest New South Wales display village, located at Brooks Reach in the Illawarra exceeded expectations during December, with enquiry levels also steadily up across all projects compared to the same time last year. Stockland General Manager Residential New South Wales, Andrew Whitson said he believes many people who may have felt the need to delay decisions would be motivated to take control this year. “We know that world events and crises closer to home have previously had an impact on buyer confidence, but there are signs that people who may have put off decisions, around buying and building a home for example, are starting to take action,” he said. “We’re hearing from people visiting our sales suites that they’re sick of sitting in a holding pattern and want to make some positive plans. “Buyers at our communities are purchasing their first ever home; growing their family and need a bigger home; downsizing as they look towards a comfortable retirement; sea-changing or tree-changing for a change of scenery or work; or moving to be closer to family.” Brooke and Mitchell Tallon-Henniker have embraced change with their recent purchase at Stockland’s Brooks Reach community. “We’re from the local area and live just a few streets away. As soon as we saw the blocks on offer we knew it was a great opportunity for us to buy and build our dream home. “We’ve never built our own home before so it was a big decision, but now that we’ve made the purchase we’re really excited about the future. Our children are quite young and we’re hoping this will be the house they grow up in. We’ve never been happier and we know it was the right time for us to take that step,” Brooke said. From January 14 to February 25 2013, Stockland will offer approved purchasers a $10,000 VISA gift card to spend as they wish, making it easier for buyers to enter the property market, or upgrade to a new home.
