We moved to the United States in 1999 from Santiago, Chile, and were fortunate enough to land in Asheville. It was always a dream of my dad’s, Raul Souza, to ‘make it in America.’ He had to start from the bottom, working long hours at factories, making money any way he could to support our family. 14 Fine Homes & Design | Fall 2020
One day while raking leaves, we met a man who would change everything for him and make his dream a reality. This gentleman saw the work ethic of my dad and took him under his wing to teach him everything he could about construction. My dad soaked up everything and eventually worked hard
enough to get his contracting license in 2005 and start building houses on his own. It was not an easy start, but as word spread about the effort my dad was putting in and the quality of his houses, his reputation quickly started to form. Fast forward 20 years, R.S. Construction is proud to be building all over Asheville and neighboring towns. We take pride in what we do and treat every home as

Planned Use: Whether you’re assessing your current situation or looking to invest into a new project, take time to really understand what it is you are wanting out of the space. Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, many people have had to stay at home more than most years. Naturally, this has created the need for a diverse living spaces, as well as embracing outdoors holistically. Understanding your needs should be the first step in any design process. Specific uses call for specific dimensions, such as outdoor cooking equipment, pergolas, or particular games. From outdoor furniture, fire pits, and exercise equipment - make sure you have the right dimensions before starting any construction. As outdoor fire pits continue to gain in popularity, we always tell people to make sure you’re measuring for the comfort of those around the fire. Is there space to walk, navigate and socialize comfortably and safely? If not, then something needs to be done to

accommodate those factors. Don’t just stop at your current wants and needs. Make sure to think of any possible long term needs that may happen over the course of a few years. This can be done upfront or in phases. Plan now, and enjoy for years to come. Structural Components and Water Flow: Retaining walls, drainage elements, and fences are just a few of the hardscape options that you’ll want to plan on evaluating when looking to extend or enhance your outdoor living area. Your home is extremely important, so making sure the foundation is safe should be the most important part of any construction. By preventing erosion with retaining walls, and acknowledging water flow, you can open up land for more use, while simultaneously keeping the structure of your property together. Take note of erosion and water flow of your property as you’re creating an outdoor area. A beautiful paver patio or fire pit area is no use if it’s constantly underwater. Overall Aesthetics: Being able to transition from the indoors to the outdoors, is an art form within itself. Thankfully, there are so many materials and products that can help create a seamless transition for you, your family and friends. With the colder months, hardscape elements tend to become more predominant. For this reason, we make sure to tell our clients to really think about the materials you are going to use. Whether it’s a specific paver that enhances your home’s features, or the type of stone that matches color of your home - it matters.
Your hardscape components should have a healthy balance of various trees, shrubs, flowers and plants to create a natural balance into the outdoors. This doesn’t necessarily mean a 50/50 ratio, but it does mean being intentional with the placement. Does it compliment or overpower the other? Are there alternative options that don’t eliminate aesthetics? How will each space look during all four months? Maintenance: Everything changes and ages over time, regardless of whether we want it to. While hardscape elements in your yard shouldn’t lose their structural component over time, there are some materials will change on the surface. Again, we really suggest thinking about the material you plan on using in your hardscape. Some pavers aren’t meant to be used in areas that use salt for ice, which won’t support the longevity of the product - and probably not best for outdoor use in mountain region of NC. Using wood as a retaining wall option has its place, but will inevitably age over time more than stone or concrete options. While some individuals like the moss and aged looked of stone or paver patios, others may decide they want a continued clean look and feel each year - so cleaning and maintenance is required. When assessing your hardscape this fall and winter, make sure to really look to your needs. This has been a historical year and we can’t stress the importance of outdoor living enough. Take time to get outside and truly figure out what will bring you more joy in the upcoming year.
