We create environments for seniors that encourage the human spirit to grow and flourish—improving the quality of life and sense of community for residents. Our architectural expertise ranges from master planning, new construction, renovations, sustainable design, and all other aspects of the built environment.

We have successfully completed more than 170 projects in 30 states for a variety of senior living environments including assisted living, independent living, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRC), as well as long-term care and skilled nursing facilities.

When designing these environments, we believe a home is more than brick and mortar. It is the essence of the individual resident interacting with people and friends, enjoying life in a safe familiar environment. We are committed to improving the quality of life for residents of any age by creating environments and communities in which to thrive.

TRENDS

Integrating “wellness” into senior living communities is an important aspect of both community repositioning and new community development. Wellness involves the whole person, and it centers around six dimensions: social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, vocational, and physical. It’s more than state-of-the-art gyms and fitness classes; communities strive to be a center of well-being.

Holistic wellness (or whole person wellness) has proven to reduce health care costs and urgent medical treatment. Part design and part programming, today’s senior living community includes access to outdoors, dining alternatives, social spaces, continuing education, occupational therapy, and spiritual support. The broader definition of wellness has evolved rapidly, and senior living options have evolved with it.

TRENDS

Today’s senior living residences reflect a movement towards hospitality and home-like environments, certainly not the sterile environments that were at one time associated with facilities for seniors. From dining options to common areas, facilities are designed to encourage a sense of activity and destination. The reality is that elderly people don’t want to be in an institution, they want a much more home-like setting. Interiors have moved away from institutional products, and now feature furniture and finishes more in common with a hotel than a hospital.

CASE STUDY

BRIGHTVIEW GREAT FALLS

For Brightview at Great Falls, special care was taken to create a design harmonious with the surrounding historic vernacular of Great Falls and natural topography of the site. The 72,000 sf four-story building is set back from the property line with the finished floor elevation established six feet below the road, allowing for a softer streetscape.

The building’s exterior is comprised of moss green siding, natural stone, white trim and simple gables and hip roof forms in keeping with the character of the neighborhood. The building’s mass was broken up with several one story wings to give a human scale and understated appearance to the façade. Stone chimneys and other elements such as covered porches were designed to give the building the feeling of a single family residence.

WOODLANDS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

The Woodlands Retirement Community campus includes a four-story 191,500 sf independent living facility (ILF) containing 102 luxury apartments with underground parking garage for 86 cars. The program includes administrative offices and resort style amenities including an indoor pool and spa, beauty salon, movie theater, party rooms, library, and full service kitchen with elegant dining rooms. Extensive landscaping and the creation of outdoor living spaces unify the campus and reinforce the inviting, residential character of the facility.

On the same Fairfax, VA campus is Virginia Gardens, a three-story assisted living facility (ALF) spanning 85,000 sf. This facility features spacious living areas, dining spaces, and hospitality inspired resident care areas including a garden area, as well as on-grade parking and extensive landscaping. The design incorporates a floor dedicated to a three-stage Memory Care program to offer a wide ranging care continuum for residents coping with Alzheimer’s disease.

THE RESIDENCE AT COLVIN RUN

The Residence at Colvin Run in the Great Falls area offers seniors a great place to live with a distinctively different approach to senior living. The facility spans three floors and 53,104 sf, providing 44 assisted living apartments and 18 memory care residences. It is designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area, preserving its character and ambiance. The facility surpasses industry standards with its luxurious resident rooms, high-quality construction, and cozy cottage-like atmosphere.

The community features modern amenities such as the latest IT technology and security systems, state-of-theart pathogen control technologies, community-wide Wi-Fi, and covered porches. Thoughtful architecture enhances the overall ambiance with fitness facilities, an art studio, a theater, and multiple dining venues, including an open-hearth brick oven, providing residents with variety and choice. The development team partnered with IntegraCare, a senior living operator with a successful track record since 1999, boasting expertise from 18 previous developments.

ARTIS SENIOR LIVING

Architecture, Inc. is providing design services for more than 25 assisted living facilities across the United States for Artis Senior Living. Architectural services have ranged from schematic design through construction administration as well as construction administration for prototype site adaptations.

The new assisted living facilities range from two-story to six stories, and span approximately 100,000 sf to 200,000 sf. The high-end assisted living centers feature amenities such as landscaped pedestrian plaza on the ground floor, outdoor dining, fitness centers, beauty salons, craft studios, a TV room, library, lounges, and rooftop terraces. The facilities feature typical accommodations from studios to two bedrooms.

The design for each prototype incorporates local building materials, and is influenced by local and current trends in multifamily residential development.
