HEALTHCARE
Our vision and understanding of healthcare solutions is only one of the strengths that sets us apart—we truly care. The environment provided to diagnose and treat has never been more important to providers, physicians, or to your patients. At Architecture, Incorporated we have seen the evolution of healthcare delivery over time, and work to anticipate future needs.
What sets a provider apart is the quality of care, and an understanding of the community and their needs. In a heavily regulated environment, challenges abound from insurance providers, a diminishing skilled workforce, and the rising costs of technology. Never has the need for intelligent, evidence-based design been more important.
Healing environments have emerged to satisfy the core human needs of safety, hope, and spirit by carefully and thoughtfully blending space, light, and functional solutions to maintain the patients’ connection with their community.
TRENDS
Healthcare providers have come to realize the positive impact a hospitality-style experience can have on patients—reducing anxiety while creating a positive first impression. No longer the bus station-style layout of outdated interconnected chairs, healthcare waiting rooms of today provide comfort and reduce stress by offering patients and visitors a choice in how they experience the space.
Some visitors prefer to pass the time completely distracted, whether through their mobile device or by exploring educational material about wellness topics, while others prefer a quieter space or a degree of privacy to consult with family. Flexible seating arrangements support a more customized experience, and empowers patients and visitors to make the space support their own definition of waiting.

As designers specializing in healing environments, we consider the psychology of color in healthcare facilities—color is more impactful than most realize. Similar to the design of hospitality or commercial spaces, color is an important tool to utilize in healthcare design, and it potentially has the power to enhance well-being. Lower stress levels and a positive mood can improve overall health, and certain colors have been proven to encourage calmness and happiness.
For example, in a hospital setting, one way to encourage calmness is to incorporate soothing colors. In a children’s hospital, however, utilizing more vibrant colors may help the younger patients to feel more relaxed and happy, reducing their stress and anxiety. Color can also be a valuable design tool for wayfinding in larger facilities, helping visitors navigate between floors and departments.

TRENDS
Numerous technological breakthroughs have made cancer treatment options more accessible. Historically, these machines have been large, expensive, and complex to operate—not to mention intimidating.
Smaller machines are less intimidating for patients undergoing radiation treatment. As healthcare design experts, we work with providers to find ways to diminish anxiety and create a better patient experience. Through color, sound, and graphics, patients are offered much needed distraction during treatment.

The exam room is the primary place where caregivers sit with patients, talk with them, listen to their concerns, and work with them on treatment plans and next steps. Factors in designing exam rooms include privacy, comfort, and efficiency; ultimately ensuring patient satisfaction and experience. For patients, the level of comfort can directly influence their anxiety level. Likewise, physicians need to be comfortable in their environment in order to provide efficient patient care.
A significant aspect of this efficiency is having the right type of equipment including the exam table and devices to collect digital data. The layout and configuration of these elements can greatly impact the effectiveness of the clinical space. The room needs to be large enough to accommodate the patient, physician, and staff, and allow exams and procedures to be properly performed.

INOVA - FAIR OAKS MOB IV
This four-story, 115,000 sf Class-A office building was designed to be an integral part of the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Campus. The LEED Silver project incorporates a skin of brick, insulated metal panels, aluminum storefront, and glazed curtain wall with sunshades. The cellar level includes a unique light well to provide occupants with natural daylight. The project houses a variety of medical and laboratory tenants. The radiology suite is 11,000 sf and contains vaults for two linear accelerators used in this cancer treatment.
The 7,600 sf conference center contains four conference spaces capable of providing space for meeting parties up to 16 participants and the ability to be combined into larger configurations. The center also contains a large raised-floor lecture style room for 120 occupants, and has the ability to allow multiple styles of presentations. Other spaces include a computer training room, beverage bar, warming pantry, and a large pre-function area for gatherings and receptions. All conference rooms are equipped with large digital displays and floor/wall connections for computers.

The design of this medical suite required careful coordination of patient types—each with a unique set of needs, medical requirements, anxieties, and expectations. The floorplan was designed to comfortably isolate pre- and post-surgical patient groups while providing surgeons and support staff access to all patients. Separate patient entrances were provided along with a separate staff entrance to support this design criterion.
Sculptural partitions foster openness and a connection between patients and working clinicians. By strategically glazing the interior with floor to ceiling glass, patients were further provided natural light and exterior views from all corridors. A break room was located contiguous to the outdoor terrace, allowing staff additional opportunity to relax and recharge.
A crisp, hospitality-influenced aesthetic was created by breaking away from the traditionally furnished waiting room to a contemporary ensemble of built-in seating elements and edge-lit partitions. Ceiling lights were carefully positioned to reflect in the polished oversized floor tile, creating a feeling of space and height.

ARLINGTON DHS
The Arlington County Department of Human Services needed a new home to consolidate numerous disparate locations into a comprehensive campus of community focused programs. Architecture, Inc. was selected to fully renovate a three-building campus known in Arlington as Sequoia Plaza for a total of approximately 230,000 sf. The entire campus was repositioned and rebranded as the new home for the Department of Human Services. Achieving this goal involved development of a complex renovation strategy to address the diverse needs of this multi-bureau County agency, and balanced with the physical constraints and opportunities presented by the existing buildings.
The project was phased to permit existing programs to be relocated and newly vacated spaces renovated for other programs to take their place. To allow incremental occupancy of the project by phases, the design team obtained multiple building permits for the project. This allowed each floor to be finalized and occupied while construction progressed on other floors of the building. Construction progressed from the top down, so the top floors and the main entry lobbies were completed first and occupied upon their completion. As floors were completed, the owner was able to occupy the respective floor as progress continued.
