EDUCATION
We have established a reputation for the planning and design of educational environments, dedicating more than 30 years collaborating with many regional school districts. From new construction and renovations, to interior fit-outs and expansions, Architecture, Inc. has a range of experience comprising complex phasedoccupied renovations, detailed programming and educational specifications, and fast-tracked construction.
Our professional relationships include Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, and Rockingham counties as well as Montgomery County in Maryland and the DC public school system. Our commitment to providing nurturing educational environments in every design is demonstrated by our long list of successful projects and longstanding school district relationships.
TRENDS
Makerspaces are popping up everywhere right now— in regular education classrooms, libraries, and art rooms. Today’s students are empowered to collaboratively innovate, create, and learn through choice, experimentation, and play. The “maker movement” encourages educational environments that foster authentic engagement.
A makerspace is a natural extension of the traditional art room, and it doesn’t have to be an expensive mission for your school or department. Tactile activities are just as important as the tech options, and diversity in your makerspace leads to more authentic educational exploration—preparing students for an engaged future.

TRENDS
8 | education
In order to keep up with growth, many school districts do not have the time to design each building from scratch. The economy, the time—it all weighs in. These communities are faced with a real challenge to construct educational environments as economically and quickly as they can, but that does not mean they can’t be great schools.
A good prototype needs to be extremely adaptable, flexible, and allow for easy changes and adjustments down the road. Flexible design makes it easier to adapt to specific sites, and it also lends itself to sustainability. So, don’t write off prototype because it’s perceived as repetitive and economic. A prototype can be the most high-performing building that we see today.

COOLIDGE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
After a complete modernization and restoration, Coolidge Senior High School was re-imagined for a science, math, computer technology, media, and arts focused curriculum. Built in 1940, the 318,000 sf Georgian-style school had been expanded in 1987 with the addition of a 91,400 sf sports complex. In addition to the high school, a new collocated middle school was also planned for the site. The design-build team focused on stabilizing the historic structure while creating educational programs for two distinct schools. The high school remained in the northern half of the building while the Ida B. Wells Middle School was provided a separate entrance in a 12,600 sf addition. Two exterior service courts were enclosed with soaring glass roofs to accommodate an arts commons, shared dining commons, and a variety of classrooms. Historic preservation efforts included restoration of the cupola, replacing all original windows roof tiles, recreation of a historic greenhouse, as well as interior restoration of the auditorium. Having achieved LEED Gold, sustainable features include energy efficient mechanical systems, a green roof on the addition, low VOC materials, and a stormwater management system.

MARYVALE / SANDBURG CO-LOCATION
Located on the site of a previous 1960’s middle school, the co-located Maryvale Elementary School / Carl Sandburg Learning Center is a new 165,000 sf facility designed for two student populations. Maryvale is designed for 600 K-5 general education students while Sandburg is designed for 150 special education students in a single story centered around a courtyard. The co-location of this special education program allows for mainstreaming opportunities into the general education classrooms.
The building plan incorporates the program of both schools on either end with a shared media center, kitchen, building services, teachers’ lounge, and health services suite located in the center. The administrative areas for each school are zoned in a continuous space across the front of the school to foster collaboration. The building’s exterior is designed to appear as a single facility with two distinct entrances differentiated by color. One of the signature design elements are the cascading entry canopies, acting like a tree canopy that allows sunlight to reach the ground while offering protection from rain and snow.

WEST SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
West Springfield High School is an existing 288,000 sf school housing 2,200 students. The project comprises a comprehensive renovation touching all areas of the school. The design includes additions totaling approximately 109,000 sf, highlighted by relocating the entrance of the school to the main parking lot and the “fly-over” science addition.
The multi-phased renovation brings the school up to the modern standards for programs, systems, and teaching concepts. The athletic fields were also renovated by realigning some of the fields, providing new lighting on the fields, and combining the varied storage areas into a single, cohesive storage building.

TERRASET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Originally designed in 1975, Terraset was built as a 990-student open plan program concept, and was conceived as a completely energy conservative building. The school utilized “earth-cover,” a sophisticated heat reclamation mechanical system, and passive and active solar energy to heat and cool the building.
For the renovation, some exterior walls and the roof remained, while the 70,000 sf interior was modified and reconfigured. Terraset retained its grass roof, with portions of the building extending outside the original footprint though 34,000 sf of additions. The entry courtyard was enclosed, and two bridges were replaced with a single pedestrian bridge covered by a canopy that is reminiscent of the original solar panel array.
The new portions of the school include an administrative addition to the front entrance, a new library, classrooms, fine arts addition (both art and music), and a School Age Child Care addition. The existing student dining facility was expanded and updated to accommodate the increased student body. Renovations were phased in order for the school to remain functional throughout the process.
