Could you please pass the kale? How Arina Turulja extends her leadership beyond Student Council Joe Mangiapane | Staff Writer It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No more midterms, no more essays, no more labs, just got to finish up some finals. Alright; maybe the most wonderful time of the year is in a few weeks when the fall semester has come to an official end and the last exam has been completed. It’s almost the Holiday season and we all know the food will be good. And while we are all burying ourselves in five or six of the most delicious dishes we’ve ever had, we should remember to stay healthy (just a little bit!) Arina Turulja is in her third year at the University of Toronto studying Biology, English and Political Science and is currently the Education and Government Commissioner of the St. Mikes Student Council. Her responsibilities on council include, increasing networking between student groups and faculty members, and plan interesting events like debates and a year-end Symposium. Arina commutes every day from Georgetown and acknowledges that it gets tough to stay organized and keep focused, however incorporating

some physical activity and staying healthy into her routine has kept her balanced. “I try to stay educated through current articles and shows -that is usually how I combat any lack of motivation I may have. For me, the toughest part of being a student and trying to lead a healthy lifestyle at the same time is getting the right amount of sleep”. Arina understands the benefits of living an active lifestyle and takes initiative to partake in some cardio and weight training at Hart House about 3 times a week and on weekends she spends her spare time going on bike rides, runs or hikes. “I like to take as many opportunities as I can to not stay seated for long periods of time”. With the holidays approaching, Arina is looking forward to eating carrots, kale and broccoli while watching her family indulging in turkey, stuffing, marinated fish, all kinds of pies and chocolatey deliciousness. Just kidding, when asked about Christmas dinner she was more than happy to answer “I will undoubtedly enjoy Christmas in all its food glory”. Her Bosnian roots mean that she is very excited to eat all of her nation's delicacies, like Burek (fried pastry) or as she refers to it the greatest meal of the holidays. “During

the holiday seasons, I try to enjoy my favourite foods and if I happen to eat a little more than I should one night and another, I will just work a little harder at the gym the following day. It's all about balance”. Balance, discipline and time management are, as most of us know, skills that most university students lack. We have difficulty planning our time properly and sticking by our self-made schedules. All students have prioritized school first as they should, where does the commitment to ourselves land? The commitment we have to our bodies? Put time into yourself and you’ll be amazed as to how far you can go. Arina encourages students to start taking charge and get their bodies in check. “Start today. Pack your lunches. Buy a locker. Set goals. Make an awesome playlist. There are many steps one can take to get to a healthier lifestyle and they all start with you. Students need to get informed. SMC offers things like Yoga classes, healthy snacks in the Brennan Hall foyer, and intramural sports teams to promote healthy living. As a side note, there's a 73.6% chance that you can find a gym partner at any time in the student lounge”. She did the math folks.

The best and most interesting outfits from across campus Annum Roshan | Living Editor We wanted to do something different for this issue of the sartorialist, so we decided to turn the lens onto the photographer for once, presenting our very own YouNa Kim as our model for this issue. A second year student majoring in Neuroscience and Animal Physiology, YouNa is bringing in the holiday cheer with her green and red ensemble. Take note of this people, this is how you dress up for Christmas without wearing a light up snowman sweater that sings “Jingle Bells” when you poke it. YouNa wears a plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters, along with a green bag by Vieta,

and off-sets the bright colours with a white sweater from Forever 21, along with pants from Cheap Monday and shoes by Dr. Martens. We asked Ms. Kim a few questions regarding her style. AR: What are your favourite stores to shop at in Toronto? YK: Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and the ever popular student choice, H&M. AR: what is your ultimate wardrobe essential? YK: I would say my cardigans (no,not the grandma kind), AR: Who is your go-to designer? YK: Definitely Tory Burch. AR: Who is your celebrity style inspiration?

YK: Alexa Chung AR: So far, what has been your funniest or most unusual experience while shopping? YK: One time I was in Forever 21 and was wearing my High School monogram hoodie when someone came up to me and asked if I went to Ryerson since the hoodie had an ‘R’ on it, and when I said no, another person said to her, “Are you stupid, she doesn’t go to Ryerson!” and they started fighting. Then I finally got a word in edgewise and told them where the hoodie came from. It was superawkward. As the last issue of the term, we bid thee adieu and wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and most of all, Happy No-Studying!

The end of an era Serie A soccer suffers after match fixing scandal Stefano Tesoro | Staff Writer In 2006 the face of Italian professional football changed forever. Though the Italian national team was able to secure its fourth world cup title, Italy’s domestic soccer league was left in shambles as league champions Juventus were implicated in one of the largest football scandals in Italian history. The Calciopoli Scandal (named in part after the 1992 tangentopoli or bribesville scandal) marked a turning point in Serie A football, as many clubs were slapped with heavy penalties including the unprecedented relegation of Juventus to the Serie B for the first time in its history. Though the clubs involved in the match-fixing scandal have largely bounced back, as evidenced by AC Milan’s Scudetto victory in 2011, there remains a gap in the level of play evident in the Serie A. Such an assertion is not meant to deride the league’s quality of

play, as competition between squads remains relatively fast paced and entertaining. Rather, in acknowledging the gradual decline of such powerhouse teams as AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, one is left to wonder in which direction is Italian football headed. One may be moved to blame the current economic climate as the sole reason behind the recent poor performance of the Big Three teams. Such an assertion however may ignore additional factors not previously explored such as player moral, a steadily improving German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 or the further growth of domestic clubs like Lazio or Napoli, who may actually challenge for the Scudetto this year. Though Juventus and Inter are sitting in first and third place respectively, one cannot ignore the Turin side’s recent dip in form which saw its defeat at the hands of both Milanese teams. While Inter have had a somewhat successful year under newly promoted youth coach

Andrea Stramaccioni, a series of recent losses culminating in a 1-0 defeat against Parma suggest the Nerazzurri have not yet regained the same level of play as they once had under José Mourinho. In recognizing this it becomes difficult to conclude an alternating title reign between the Big Three will continue to exist. In looking at recent standings one will note that just six points separate league leaders, Juventus from fifth place Lazio. Such a revelation speaks to the high degree of talent now available across the Serie A. Though there have been tight title races in

the past, what we are now seeing is perhaps an evolution of sorts, where previously discounted teams are now viable challengers. While such a theory may usher in a new wave of Italian football oriented along the same lines as the Ligue 1 and emulating their style of play, one cannot discount Inter, AC or Juventus’ determination to regain their lost standing. It is such determination which sees the continuing resurgence of AC Milan. Though the Rossoneri own a large degree of their success to talismanic

striker, Stephan El Shaarawy, there remains a strong level of concern among the Rossoneri faithful that the worst is not over yet. In contemplating the future of the Serie A one is left to consider several frightening issue ranging from continued referring irregularities to the possibility of increased foreign direct investment. Though such issues may threaten the credibility of Italian domestic football one cannot disagree that the rest of Europe finds itself in a similar situation.

After calling a professional mediation team and thusly dismissing them, hopes for any hockey this year are quickly fading. The group released a statement explaining that it was too soon for mediation as the two sides were still too far apart. The official cancellation date is in February. Talks have resumed without Gary Betman so there may still be hope yet, hockey fans!

Their win comes right off the heels of the announcement that their highest paid star, David Beckham, will be retiring this season 2. After choosing to sit their starting lineup, the San Antonio Spurs almost defeated the Miami Heats’ first team. Spurs continually kept at the Heat during the game, and were unlucky to be beaten 105 to 100. 3. Liverpool FC won this past weekend beating Southampton 1-0.
