Once in peril, these majestic birds have made an amazing comeback across the country in recent years, and Alabama has made significant contributions to their survival story.

It’s a bald eagle, soaring toward a nearby treetop.

DOWN THE TRAIL In nearby downtown Guntersville, quaint shops and eateries are nestled in the lakeside historic district, including the Rock House Eatery, a Southern gourmet restaurant priding itself on serving fresh, homemade food using sustainable sources.

Every fall, bald eagles migrate to Alabama from northern states and Canada to spend the winter enjoying more moderate temperatures and ice-free waters before returning north in the spring.

Due to active habitat restoration efforts by the state’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, populations traveling here have increased, and now some eagles are nesting in the state.

Several nesting pairs now reside year round in Lake Guntersville State Park, and the Park hosts Eagle Awareness weekends each January and February that offer indoor interpretive programs with guest speakers and live birds.

The real draws are the guided field trips to nesting sites and the chance to see the resident and visiting eagles take to the air and tend to their new brood of eaglets. But the weekend is about more

than just bird watching. The Park’s experts, including naturalist Patti Donnellan, stress the importance of habitat preservation for the eagles as well as other birds and animals and educate onlookers on the eagle’s life cycle, migration patterns and hunting and mating habits. Did you know that young bald eagles are all brown and only get their signature white cap when they reach maturity? They’re also monogamous, staying with one partner for life.

During the field trips, Donnellan offers advice on how to spot the birds and distinguish them from other area birds of prey. The most important tip? Bring a camera and binoculars.

The programs and tours are free, and guests are encouraged to arrive early, since they often fill up fast. Participants can also take advantage of special accommodation packages at the newly renovated Park Lodge as well as discounts at the Lodge restaurant.

Eagle Awareness Weekends are free, but donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. Consider making a small gift to help keep this educational opportunity available to all.

We all know and love the classic ways to enjoy Southern Super Foods. You can whip up a pot of plain ole grits (or add some cheese). You can eat muscadines raw or cook ‘em down into jelly.

But these recipes by food blogger Jennifer Kornegay put a little twist on the traditional and are definitely worth a try.

Eat this.

Don’t eat that.

In the South, we like to do things our own way. And while we could definitely cut down on the butter, salt and frying frenzy, it’s nice to know we have been doing something right. Check out these Southern Super Foods (and give yourself a little pat on the back).

You can make the grit cakes ahead and keep in the freezer for two months.

4 1/2 cups whole milk or half and half 1/4 cup sugar 2 cinnamon sticks

Green tomatoes:

Although not as nutritious as vine-ripened tomatoes, green tomatoes can hold their own with vitamin C, dietar y f iber, beta-ca rotene, ca lcium, potassium and some amounts of protein, phosphorus, vitamin K and magnesium. (Not that you’d want to, but never eat raw green tomatoes. They potentially carry a toxin sometimes known to be poisonous.)

Grits: Purportedly cultivated more than 5,000 years

ago, this delicious corn-based staple food carries iron, selenium and dietary fiber along with a small amount of protein. Vitamin B-9 can also be found as well as some of those desirable carbs that help provide energy. (But go easy on that salt and butter, will ya?)

Pecans:

No matter how you say it, these nutrient-rich nuts a re hig h in hea lthy unsaturated fat, v itamin A , v itamin B, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and zinc.

Muscadines: Jellies, wines, juices, fruit strips—the

possibilities are endless with this indigenous Southern grape. Similar to its sister scuppernong, muscadines contain an ideal amount of dietary fiber and antioxidants, not to mention a large water content.

1 cup grits

Remember when granddaddy liked to kick back a cold glass to top off supper? Well this essential Southern baking ingredient has many of the same health benefits as regular milk. But it also packs a punch with vitamin A, vitamin C and a number of B vitamins as well as many essential and trace minerals.

Buttermilk

2 teaspoons vanilla 1 tablespoon butter honey for drizzling chopped pecans Put milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla in a large saucepan over low to medium heat and steep the milk for 25-30 minutes.

Remove the cinnamon sticks and bring the milk to a boil.

Add the grits and cook, stirring often, until thickened.

Spread the hot grits in a 1 1/2- to 2-inch layer on a sheet pan lined with wax paper and put in the fridge to set up, about 30-45 minutes.

Use biscuit or cookie cutters to cut the cold grits into grit cakes.

Owner Alan Tolson first got interested in the art and science of roasting coffee while working in a local coffee shop in college. He realized then that manipulating the roasting process gave him the ability to highlight the best characteristics of any given bean. He hasn't stopped roasting, blending and creating coffees he loves to see others love since.

What is your favorite coffee y’all serve? “My favorite coffee right now is our Colombian Asojardin. It is a lighter-medium roast that has notes of sweet chocolate, raspberry jam and subtle hint of grape as it cools. It has a smooth, medium body and a slightly dry finish.”

What do you love about what you do? “I love that we continuously challenge ourselves and learn new elements of coffee. No two coffees from different origins roast exactly the same, nor will the same coffee from crop to crop, year to year. We use recycled and eco-friendly materials as much as possible in the plant and use an afterburner that reduces 98 percent of the roaster’s emissions.”

What is your favorite coffee that y'all produce? “Our Sumatran. It's flavorful and bright. Our best seller is our Black Warrior Riverkeeper Blend. It's a beautiful, medium-bodied coffee, and I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't love it.”

Step back with your right leg and pass the kettlebell under the left leg as the knee bends.

As you bring the kettlebell up from your left hand back to your right hand, step your right leg back forward to the start position with feet together.

Resembling a cannon ball with a handle attached, kettlebells have been used as an exercise tool for centuries. And although they have reportedly been a favorite weightlifting tool for Eastern Europeans since the 1700’s, (it’s the national sport of Russia!), its popularity in the U.S. with devout weightlifters has transitioned into a favorite way for many to get stronger backs, increased cardio fitness and a more powerful core!

THE SWING IS KETTLEBELL’S 101 MOVE. But, it’s not a squat! You hinge at the hips with a straight and neutral spine slightly bending the knees as you send the kettlebell through your legs.

Then, punch through your hips to propel it out and up. You won’t need to lift it with your arms.

Kettlebell moves involve most of the major muscles and joints in the body working synchronously.

In real life, our bodies work this way—as a set of connected moving parts that help bodies function better in daily tasks.

The trick with kettlebells is how well you control them. Since all of the weight is distributed below the handle, gravity and momentum love to accelerate kettlebells.

Your core has to work to control the gathering momentum.

Ask anyone who’s done swings, presses and pulls, and they will tell you their heart rate easily elevates into its target zone. Unlike traditional weightlifting, kettlebells use all of those cardio muscles in the legs, low back and trunk.

Rack the kettlebell so it sits in the groove between your upper arm and forearm.

Using your legs (with your arm), split jump with left foot going forward and punch the kettlebell upward. Re-rack the kettlebell first then jump your feet back together.

FOR CHILDREN

HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP DO CHILDREN NEED?

Create Positive Bedtime Associations Work to create the attitude that sleep is a good thing, not a punishment. Avoid sending children to bed as “punishment.”

Instead, instill the attitude of sleep as a healthy, relaxing part of the day. Be sure your child knows when the (reasonable) bedtime is.

Talk about how rest helps their body and mind.

For many children, sleep problems can be easily remedied by making a few simple adjustments to their bedtime routine. For those children who seem to experience chronic sleeplessness, it might be time to consult their pediatrician. WebMD lists the following two major categories of sleep problems as a helpful reference for parents:

The area’s first musician to attain major fame was W.C. Handy, known now as the “father of the blues.” He was born in Florence in 1873, and as a boy, was exposed to music in the church where his father and his grandfather served as pastors. He was the first to put the blues on sheet music, making the regional style more available to the rest of the country and the world. Every summer, the 10-day W.C. Handy Music Festival in Florence celebrates and preserves this heritage.

In the decades following Handy, other musicians from far and wide traveled to The Shoals. The music studios FAME in Muscle Shoals and Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield became legendary after artists like The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin recorded there in the 1960s and 1970s. Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd also recorded in The Shoals. They all came hoping to add the area's signature sound to their work, which included the talents of local musicians called The Swampers.

FAME is still cutting records today, and while the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is no longer making albums, its original location now houses the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation, which is open for tours.

Alabama’s still-growing musical legacy. For years, the area has inspired and incubated artists and bands; today, a new crop is taking the country by storm. So where does all this talent come from? Perhaps it’s in the water, gurgling forth from the "singing river.”

That's what Native Americans called the Tennessee River, describing the gentle babbling they heard as currents flowed over the rocky shoals.

Alabama Chanin’s shop in Florence proves you can’t judge a book by its cover. The storefront is in an industrial park, attached to the facilities where the company designs, sews and dyes its clothing. It may look like a warehouse on the outside, but inside, racks of hand-sewn dresses, shirts and skirts are artfully displayed along with a thoughtful selection of books and home decor that complement designer Natalie Chanin’s creations.

She’s become a household name in the world of high fashion, thanks to the timeless appeal of her feminine but just a little funky designs. She’s also a hero in the “Southern-made” movement, thanks to her commitment to sustainability and quality. All Alabama Chanin pieces are made with organic cotton grown in the United States (some of it in Alabama), given their muted hues with natural dyes, and most are hand-sewn. Grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat at the shop’s recently opened café while you’re there.

There’s more than musical history in the Shoals; one of our state’s most famous women, Helen Keller, lived in Tuscumbia. At her childhood home, Ivy Green, you can touch the well pump where Helen and her teacher Mrs. Sullivan had their miraculous breakthrough.

The simple clapboard home holds other treasures as well, including Helen’s Braille typewriter, her letters and other personal items.

Tom's Wall For the past three decades, Tom Hendrix has been busy hand building a stone wall on the edge of the Tennessee River near the Natchez Trace. Called Tom’s Wall, it is a labor of love he is erecting to memorialize the journey his great-greatgrandmother made more than 150 years ago. A member of the area’s Yuchi tribe, when she was only a girl, she was removed with many other Native Americans and forced onto the infamous Trail of Tears to a reservation in Oklahoma.
