Enjoy a walking tour exploring the heart of medieval Reading led by our trained volunteer guides. This tour takes you to the highlights of the Abbey Quarter, including the Hospitium where medieval pilgrims stayed and the grand entrance to the Abbot’s Lodgings which became Queen Elizabeth I’s royal residence, ending in the newly conserved Reading Abbey Ruins. All ages, 1½-hour tour starting at 11am, meet in the Story of Reading Gallery £10 (under 5s free), booking essential (see our website or call us) Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 June SITELINES Presents: In Ruins A promenade theatre performance through the Abbey Quarter. Enjoy some living history in the Reading Abbey Quarter. Will you meet Queen Elizabeth I, Matilda the Empress or even King Henry I himself on your visit to the Abbey Ruins or Forbury Gardens? Our volunteers will be dressed in replica period costumes to impress you as they share royal and everyday stories of the past. (Other dates available) 11am, 1pm & 3pm Free, drop in* Save the Date! Saturday 7 July Open For Art: A Yorkshireman in Reading Music, animations, poems, anecdotes and laughter: meet Simon Mayor (mandolinist and writer) and Hilary James (illustrator and vocalist) talking about the creation of their first book of poems, drawings, anecdotes and Augmented Reality ‘Of Death and a Banana Skin’. Be inspired by Reading Abbey Revealed, the town’s major conservation project, and go on a walkabout to find out about the historical significance of the Abbey Quarter. Then sit down and read other people’s poetry and stories before taking part in some semi-structured exercises to develop your thoughts and ideas; there will still be time to draft something of your own!
