welcome Reading Abbey is Revealed!

I am delighted that on the 16 June the iconic Abbey Ruins will once again be open for all to enjoy after an extensive conservation programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Reading Borough Council. Start your exploration of the Abbey Quarter at the new Reading Abbey display in Reading Museum, before discovering a network of new outdoor interpretation panels across Reading’s most historic area. Admission is free to both the Museum and the Ruins. Restoration of historic Abbey Gateway will also be completed in the spring, so look out for our special tours and May half-term activities at the Gateway. Join us at our launch festival on 16 June across the Abbey Quarter, packed with fantastic activities including re-enactors, performers and historical crafts. Enjoy a live show and take a break at the hot food and drinks stalls. The launch kick-starts an exciting summer programme of events that will bring Reading’s leading heritage destination to life. A highlight will be the premiere of ‘In Ruins’, a SITELINES performance by South Street in partnership with Reading’s professional theatre companies. Throughout the summer you can follow Abbey Quarter trails with your family, enjoy tours, encounter friendly volunteers in historical costumes around the Ruins, or perhaps take a leisurely river cruise. There will be something for everyone and I hope you will join us to celebrate this historic landmark in Reading’s history.
