More than 36% of New York City’s population is foreign born, and it is safe to say that in this city, no single country, or region of origin dominates, it is a big melting pot, with over 170 different languages spoken. In order to efficiently reach out to diverse cultures, ReachNYC is experimenting with distributing our publication and website in various languages. ReachNYC.com, launched in April 2006, as a blog, has been viewed in over 200,000 homes, with no traditional advertising. “This generation figures to be the smartest in the history of Western civilization. Our traditional media outlets are finding it difficult to get their message across to this information-friendly generation. News isn’t sponsored or created, it is reported, and ReachNYC embodies everything with a heart-beat in this city, through first-person accounts.” Stated Miguel Fermin. ReachNYC will continue to make its presence felt in the heart of New York City’s communities, with the launch of ReachNYC TV, sponsoring of local Sports, Arts and academic organizations, and a variety of free events, contests and various advertising campaigns geared towards our viewers. The distribution of news and media is just a welcoming mat.

Evolution of Print ReachNYC is a digital magazine distributed online monthly. Digital editions are environmentally friendly. They save the paper, ink and energy used in the printing process and eliminates the paper magazine that eventually has to be recycled or disposed of in landfills. Viewers can subscribe and view our online magazine, watch behind the scenes videos and interviews, and stay up to date with current events on ReachNYC.com. Since the inception of the internet, there’s been a gradual decline in the interest of print-media. Too many of the ideas on pages end up at best in unused archives, when they should be online; searchable, linkable, part of the conversation. That’s one of the main problems with print in this new era; it is far too one-way for this two-way world. In this new world, the medium is meaningless. The viewer’s want what they want, when they want it. The wise leaders will be there with us; the stubborn ones will vanish. No other instance further verifies our theory than the digitalization of the world’s oldest print newspaper, Sweden’s Post-och Inrikes Tidningar (Swedish for “Post and Domestic Paper”), founded in 1645. “We think it’s a cultural disaster, It is sad when you have worked with it for so long and it has been around for so long”. States, Hans Holm, who served as the Editor-In-Chief for the past 20 years. The paper can now be found online and is still considered the oldest newspaper in the world.

Many other publications have followed suit, some by choice, others were left with none. Howard University, the only Historical Black College with a daily newspaper halted printing of their school-newspaper, The Hilltop, indefinitely, after high-printing costs and a decline in ad-sales left them in spiraling debt. On a lighter note, hundreds of magazines are going digital, in order to satisfy a growing online fan base, Playboy, being the latest to join the fray. A recent survey conducted by The Harrison Group in conjunction with Zinio, the leading global online publishing, distribution and retail services’ company, has identified key benchmarks and findings for readers of digital magazines. Beginning with satisfaction, this survey found that 80 percent of digital magazine readers are very, if not extremely satisfied with their experience. More so, one-third of readers pay more attention to ads in digital magazines versus print, citing the ability to click on a link or engage with the ad as a key benefit. “Through this research, we have unlocked key insights relating to strategies for driving online subscriptions, highest areas of interest and engagement times with content and advertisements.” said Rich Maggiotto, CEO of Zinio. “The findings within this survey should have an impact on how the publishing and advertising industries approach their digital distribution channels.”

Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.” “We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.”
